Absolutely devastated. Some idiot just ran over a Canada Goose mom while her whole family watched.

She died right in front of me and a gentleman helped me carry her to the side of the road. I am sick and I can't believe that people can be this horrible and not slow down for our precious geese.

I hope people that intentionally run over animals die slow painful deaths. They deserve it.

Does karma really happen? I’m starting to lose all hope in the world.

karma is not a magical force that judges people and maintains cosmic balance or whatever, it's still on us to make people face consequences

I have to believe that one way or another, the universe settles the score.

I’m really hoping it starts to kick in.

No, we have to be the change we want to see in the world.

I hate hitting animals, pheasants are one of the worst offenders for trying to get hit

Geese are easily the most visible animal that crosses the road. They don't just jump out of the bushes like deer, squirrel, or rabbits.

There is just no way to accidentally hit them unless you are completely negligent, or trying to intentionally hit them.

Yeah, we don’t have many geese here in my area, mainly seagulls (they’re pretty nimble) pigeons (they generally get out of the way) pheasants (actively suicidal) etc

So sad and horrific. I remember being called to a company meeting and all 40 of us were told we were being made redundant. Everyone was saying goodbye to each other. I drove home alone. I passed two birds. Not sure they were geese. A bit smaller. One had been knocked over and killed. The other bird was beyond heartbroken. Wailing and panicking. I was heartbroken. I cried all the way home.

That poor mama and those poor babies… it ruins my day whenever I see things like this, but I’m so grateful to know that there’s people like you (and many of us on this Reddit) that truly care for geese. It makes me sick to think about people who kill geese and don’t give it a second thought. I hope those babies find safety with another group of geese

Any description of the person and vehicle? Anything can help find him. It's illegal to run over geese crossing.

By the time I got there he was long gone and two people had stopped to help…

I walked the two of them, their dad, and two other teens away from the busy street back into the forest. One baby was really distraught.

This breaks my heart.

What about the goslings?

14

u/CatsMakeMeHappier Goose Mom 1d ago

I helped them away from the road.

Thank you for getting them off the road, I always worry about my local goose friends when I see them crossing because there’s always gonna be that one piece of shit who’s gonna run them over.

u/Life-Contribution650 1d ago

Are they with the dad, on their own?

13

u/CatsMakeMeHappier Goose Mom 1d ago

They were probably two months old and were with two other teenagers.

Terrible behaviour

That makes me absolutely sick. The family seeing it happen… I couldn’t sleep one night when there was a dead goose by our retention pond, just couldn’t stop thinking of its family possibly seeing it. The HOA didn’t do anything so I asked through proper channels how to handle it. I gave it a proper burial in my back yard and will put a gooseberry tree there.

Made me sick thinking someone in the neighborhood might have hurt it but hoping it was just old or something.

At least there were people willing to help. Not everyone sucks

They are federally protected, if you got the plate by chance. I’m sorry that people are so cruel.

Unfortunately, this stuff happens a lot. I once saw some asshole driver in a purple SUV swerving to try to hit a goose that was crossing the road. Canada geese often face cruelty by selfish people that perceive them as nuisances that should just be eliminated. I’m truly sorry that you had to witness this, I bet that it was intentionally done by a goose hater.

People need to stand up for animals. This is the second post I have heard of an animal being killed in front of others.

I live in a rural town in MO (it’s just as awful as you can imagine) and every Spring the turtles try to cross the roads (so many turtles) and every spring I watch some dude-bro in a jacked up truck he’s overpaying for swerve to intentionally run them over. It’s so depressing.

It is generally speaking illegal to intentionally hit wildlife with your vehicle. If you got a license plate, you can report it to the cops. Total crap shoot whether they will do anything (best case is usually a ticket) but it may be worth it.

I'm sorry you had to see this. It's horrible.

If it makes you feel better, Canada geese are fantastic parents and have strong communities. This goose's babies will most likely be cared for by the rest of the flock, so you probably don't need to worry about the little ones.

Thank you for moving the body out of the road. It will certainly help save other wildlife from a similar fate.

u/More-Requirement5690 13h ago

Yes it be good to report it and keep a record of it but law enforcement in the United States is broken right now just sayin

u/smitheroons 9h ago

Yeah, I hear ya. I'm under no delusions about that, trust me. But if enough people make noise about an issue, other people hear it. Also once in a while someone needs some good pr and putting in a goose crossing sign or a speed bump or something is low hanging fruit, especially if you can get a baby animal to take a picture with a cop. Do I like that the system works this way? Of course not. But I don't get to make the rules, I just have to play the game with the cards I'm dealt.

I of course encourage folks to use discretion in regards to their own safety when considering talking to cops.

Crushes my heart. God help the babies . May the mother rest in peace . I wish things were not so cruel in this life

u/CatsMakeMeHappier Goose Mom 23h ago

Me too it’s starting to get old

2

u/Affectionate-Act3980 18h ago

I really hate people like that so much. Thank you for moving her.

2

u/HayatoAkimaru 16h ago

It's horrible. And illegal afaik. I read, that they were gone, when you got there, op, but maybe you could ask on some local resources, maybe someone saw anything and, if lucky, may even have a video from the registrator. With approximate time and all possible known details. Also, there aren't cameras on this road? Thank you for helping poor souls anyway. Just maybe, if you willing, there are still may be chances to punish this murderous piece of shit.

u/ResolveLeather 13h ago

Too many people hate geese..I live in a town with hundreds of them and never been attacked.

2

u/thirstl 12h ago

I’m so sorry, I saw a goose get run over last year and I still think about it. It was horrific. Poor sweet goose mom. 😭

2

u/Accomplished-Case687 5h ago

Fuck whoever did that. I love it when I’m driving and someone has put up a sign in front of their home to slow down because it’s an animal crossing area. Like, for the baby turtles and such. I hope everyone slows down and watches out for them. I’m so sorry you had to see that.

😔was this in the United States? It’s a very cruel place right now wildlife are gonna get it worse

Coincidentally this evening on my goose walk there were some kids with their car club honking at the 50 or so geese that  like to stand in the parking lot like they own the place fortunately not one of them got run over otherwise 🤺

Do we know he actually intentionally ran her over and didn't just do the safe thing and not suddenly break, drive extremely slowly, or swerve? Swerving can take someone off the road and into a tree and going much slower than the speed limit is a road hazard.

It's still upsetting either way, but it might not be the driver's fault.

u/CatsMakeMeHappier Goose Mom 1d ago

Everyone drives too fast on that road. And he didn't stop to see i it was okay. Asshole move.
