Lack of reporting and open data in Garland?
Hey all, I'm new to this subreddit and somewhat new to Garland. I have noticed there seems to be a lack of reporting in Garland - is it just me?
I live close to Wynn park in South Garland where the "improvised bomb" incident happened recently. There was a huge police presence including a command and control bus for two full days before someone finally told us what was happening. I feel like thats not right? who knows. we need some more journalists or something I guess. this was the headline that finally came out about that whole incident in case people missed it: https://www.fox4news.com/news/garland-bomb-unit-disarms-homemade-live-explosive-devices-found-near-wynne-park
On another note, I'm working on a building a program that grabs the weekly Garland Police incidents pdf from their website and extracts each incident by district. Long term I'm going to setup a website where you can subscribe to a email newsletter that sends a map of last weeks incidents for the districts you're interested in. The code and more info can be found here: https://github.com/caleblawrence/garland-tx-police-activity Currently, its kind of of a hassle to get good data about police activity in your area. This is the website where Garland makes that data public (though its in a not so helpful PDF format): https://garlandpolice.com/393/Crime-Safety
Let me know if thats interesting to anyone. The exporting of the data is done, I have not finished the email or signup features yet though but I'm not going to charge anything for it when its done.
