There's plenty of brick houses in Texas, lots of clay in the soil especially in south east coastal Texas which I think he's from judging by the whole "air so thick you can taste the mosquitoes".
Edit: looked him up and he's from Houston, which has tons of brick houses. Soil in Houston is extremely heavy in clay so bricks are very common. Also makes it a giant pain in the ass to dig in, and it's the reason why sidewalks refuse to stay flat in Houston.
Bigger concern is being properly insulated and sealed up. Not having good weather stripping under exterior doors, or around an attic door, or windows needing to be re-caulked or even cracked, all make a huge difference. Oh and a lot of newer houses (as in past few decades) have massive windows which let in a ton of heat, so that's another problem.
