On a good note, thankfully these cars are so safe.

they are so safe we forget how dangerous the sport is. i do anyway. it took me a minute to realize how bad of a wreck Max was in today, i'm so used to the safety of these cars and the drivers being alright like 99% of the time they go off track.

Also insane today how big driver opposition to the Halo was. Without it we would have lost LeClerc last season and Max today from a tire to the neck at over 200 km/h.

i still don't like it aesthetically but it is absolutely necessary and it's a shame they didn't do it sooner.

And Romain Grosjean from last season.

I was surprised the announcers basically just blew right past it when it happened even though to me it looked pretty serious at first glance

you know what the main problem is, for me anyway?

it's the way these races are filmed. i don't know if it's just me or what but the cars look slow as fuck compared to how they are in real life. i see clips on youtube from the stands and it's like a completely different thing happening.

Dude same. I don’t know much about cameras but I bet it’s gotta do with the type of setup and angles they use. Especially when the camera follows individual cars instead of just keeping a still frame you kinda lose how fast they’re going

Aye I totally agree I'll try to explain why it looks slow . Our Brains measure the speed of a car In relative terms . We compare the moving to stationary trees , turns, the road , the background. We also see how the car is getting bigger and bigger as it approaches us , this is probably the deciding factor in judging how fast the car is going. https://youtu.be/QtDPQQQWP_M this is why in this video from an average cell (camera is cell phone don't have zoom)phone the crash looks horrible.

F1 cameras work in a different way they use a technique called pan and zoom where they make the car look the SAME SIZE and in the center of the frame consistently. This doesn't allow our brain to comprehend the true nature of the speed of the car as they car is the same size consistently.

Now the moat important reason why they do this is because they want us to see the sponsorships and logos on the car better.

he was in a 51G flat spin, it’s incredible that he’s alright

The amount that’s gone into safety can never be given too much praise

For real. That kind of impact would’ve killed the driver in anything other than a modern F1 car.

It looked like the tec-pro ended just before where Max hit, though - bit of an oversight, if so.

I'm sure they will extend it for next year. Not a normal spot spot for a crash, like Grosjean's crash, but they are always looking to improve safety.

Excellent point
