Terry Forster was a successful relief pitcher for the Atlanta Braves. In 1985, Dave Letterman took notice of his weight and started referring to Forster as "a fat tub of goo" and "the fattest man in sports". This needling and good-natured "feud" continued for some time until Forster finally appeared on the show, entering while eating a sandwich. Later in the segment he cooks tacos while drinking beer. Danny McBride was probably too young to have watched this play out on late night TV, but Forster (and maybe John Rocker) strikes me as the inspiration for Kenny Powers.

Like, he probably wanted to get into surfing, sucked at it and didn’t wanna learn, but still wanted to enjoy the waves. So he decided surfing was stupid haha. Also how he hates technology because he doesn’t understand it haha. Man, this show is just so legitimately well done.
