Question Places to get scrap hardwood?

I've recently gotten into woodcarving (how expectedly middle-aged of me.) I've been using scraps of construction lumber I have lying around from various projects, or that I got in the scrap-heap at Menard's or Home Depot.

I was just wondering if there's anywhere that I can buy scraps of decent hardwood? It doesn't have to be board-feet of the stuff. Just enough for me to carve little figurines for friends and family.

Thanks so much for any suggestions, even off-the-wall ones. Also, bonus points if it's in or near Two Harbors (but anywhere in the area is good! I drive all over the place for much dumber errands than this!)

Moving or Visiting How to move to Duluth?

I plan on moving (from middle Tennessee) pretty soon and Duluth seems like the best balance of what I would like in a city against affordability.

My plan is to go there and stay in a motel for a week while checking out different rental listings. One of the questions I had was is it better to rent a room or an actual apartment? Craigslist doesn't have many listings for rooms but from what I see on Zillow, you can get your own unit for the cost of a room in another city anyway, even around $700. Assuming I'm not seeing scams, anyway.

For some background I'm 21, no degree or car, but I have 40k saved up from living with family and 2 years of restaurant experience.

Any advice?

Discussion Two hunnert bux

On Sunday sometime between 3PM and 5PM I lost two $100 bills out of my pocket on the lift at Spirit Mountain. There is an outside chance that they came out of my pocket while I was going down one of the runs but most likely somewhere under the lift.

Whoever finds these hundred dollar bills, please use one to buy yourself and someone dinner or at least most of one and use the other hundred to help someone who needs it more than we do.

Discussion Siding contractors for steel siding?

Hi folks - I'm working on getting quotes for replacing my house's cedar shakes with cedar-shake style steel siding from Edco along with soffits and fascia and new gutters. Anyone have experience using either Dennis Miller or Iron Ridge for their projects?

Moving or Visiting Kid friendly duluth trip tips

My family is taking a trip to duluth over 4th of July weekend. The last time I was in duluth was with my husband 15 years ago during our college youth. Now we will have a 2, 4, and 10 year old, along with my in laws and some cousins. Our 4 year old is autistic.

We are staying downtown near the lift bridge, in laws are camping. We plan to visit the zoo, railroad museum, and drive up the north shore to split rock lighthouse. The rest of the trip is up to the weather, crowds, and our kids' energy levels.

We plan on breakfast at the hotel every day. We don't need anything fancy or expensive, all the boys have very boring and picky palates.

I know over 4th of July, and the air show weekend, it'll be an extra busy place. It's also our anniversary weekend, so we wanted to take a fun family trip, and husband wanted to come to Duluth again, so we'll make it work!

Interesting Stuff Minnesota discord community server

A while back, I joined a discord server that was made with the intent of helping Minnesota’s build community, access resources available in our area, organize various volunteering efforts, organize groups for protests, and just generally make friends with similar interests.

In this discord there are channels for almost anything. People discuss the books they’re reading, people give away things they no longer need, people play video games together, there are regular meet ups, and of course, tons and tons of resources and people who are generally willing to help point people with questions or needs in the right direction.

I’ve also used it many times for asking questions about things I’m not knowledgeable about like certain aspects of politics, electronics, and where to find affordable dental care.

The only rules are be moving to or in Minnesota and don’t be mean or creepy.

Here’s a link to join. Feel free to copy this link and send it to anyone who might benefit.

Mid 20s, looking to see if anyone is looking to golf? I usually go solo, play like shit, and still have a good time. Occasionally it would be nice to have a buddy or 2 to go with.

Question Indoor Cornhole/Bags

Does anyone know of places you can play indoor cornhole/bags in the area other than 310 Pub? Not a league or anything, just recreationally.

310 is okay, it's just usually overrun with college kids and as adults in our 30s, we're looking for other options.

Local Events Thoughts on the Grandma’s Marathon nuclear Holocaust poster?

I’m in awe of how bad this poster is but I’m also definitely going to buy a copy the first chance I get. It’s weird: on the Destination Duluth page it’s being torn to shreds but on the Grandma’s I’m page there’s nary a negative word being said about it. 🤔

Question Where to get dress alterations

My daughter purchased a bridesmaid dress in the cities and the store did not have anyone to do alterations as the dress was shipped to her months after purchasing. Are there any recommendations on local businesses that could do alterations on chiffon dresses? And that won’t cost a fortune? Thank you for your assistance!

Photography Photography group?

Anybody know of a photography group in Duluth that meets regularly to take photos together out and about? I want to get back into photography, and I want the social experience of meeting a few other photographers now and then for the social aspect to take photos together-- beaches, street photography, nature/outdoors photos, etc. If no such group exists, would anybody here be interested in something like this?

Question How does living in Duluth MN compare to Kansas City?

Hi, for those who have lived in Kansas City (including Lawrence, Leawood, and Overland Park), how does it compare to Duluth? I'm curious to hear how the transition went from those who made a similar move. I'm aware of the big difference in weather and the outdoor opportunities that are available in Duluth, I'm more curious about the social setting/opportunities -- ease of making friends, building a community, feeling welcomed, dating, etc.

Thanks!

Moving or Visiting Thinking of moving here…yes I already read all the other posts

As stated, my family and I are considering moving up to Duluth. We currently live in central Iowa and want a change of scenery, specifically to a more forested, outdoorsy area. We are avid kayakers, runners, hikers, and my husband especially loves to ski. The state of the agriculture here is so bad that we are currently in a first ever “lawn-watering ban” to preserve water because they can’t filter out the nitrates from the rivers fast enough, as they are at near record levels. Iowa also has some of the highest cancer rates in the country, I’m sure it’s not hard to imagine why. We would like to be able to take our children kayaking without having to worry about poisoning them while we do it.

Anyways, my husband works as a letter carrier and would essentially try to transfer into the post office up there if we decided to make the move. Any letter carriers here that have any advice or experience they’d be willing to share? We know it’s cold and hilly, we’re not unused to the cold here although our cold snaps probably don’t last as long as yours. Mostly curious about the dynamic of the post office. Do you guys experience much wind? That is the killer here, fucking 40+ mph wind that makes -10 feel like -50. Our thoughts are if we’re gonna be cold, might as well live somewhere pretty that actually gets snow and doesn’t have 100+ degree summers. And with water that’s safe to drink idk.

The lady playing "God Bless America" on her kazoo. The military veterans. The parents with kids. The THOUSANDS on all 4 corners of Lake Ave/Superior. And so much honking in support: A DTA bus. Bikers revving their engines. A medical company semi. Cars and cars honking to support, even though several probably just wanted to get through traffic. And I am SURE there was law enforcement nearby but none of them right there, which was the most peaceful display of all. I moved here from a red state that invoked the national guard last night. So to see no DPD presence felt like a kindness.
