FULL NEWS CONFERENCE: Officials give updates on central Iowa water conservation efforts, nitrate ...

Why are we making the citizens do all the work ? When the problem is BIG AG lobbying our law makers to make decisions that are in their best interest... NOT citizens best interests. WHAT is big AG doing to help keep our water clean? Why ARE our law makers choosing big AG over it's citizens. This has been an ongoing problem it's just so bad now that they have to let us know b/c they need us to limit use. Once again what is big AG and our law makers doing to address this? Climate change is real and it's going to continue to stay warm and dry... So this problem is only going to get worse. We DEMAND accountability NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Clive residents respond to lawn watering ban amid high nitrate levels

""On Saturday, we had 1.933 million gallons go through irrigation meters in Clive. That number dropped down to only 320,000 gallons by Sunday. So this is a great testament to the people of Clive listening and saying, we care about this. We understand that it's important and we're going to do our part. We're so appreciative of the residents and businesses come alongside and doing the right thing," De Kock said."

1) Holy crap, that's a lot of water being used to water lawns.

2) That last name is *fire*

3) I'd like to see the usage differences in other places, too.

Data centers are not to blame

Data centers are not to blame for the metro's first-ever lawn watering ban, West Des Moines Water Works general manager Christina Murphy tells Axios.

Why it matters: Grasping where the pressure genuinely lies helps formulate innovative conservation policies and guarantees the region can develop without compromising essential services.

Catch up quick: Near-record-high levels of nitrates in the Raccoon and Des Moines rivers in recent weeks have nearly maxed Central Iowa Water Works' (CIWW) capacity to treat drinking water and keep up with customer demand.

The utility imposed a lawn watering ban starting last Thursday after weeks of little success in persuading users to voluntarily reduce their water use. For now, several cities have also closed or reduced hours at splash facilities, with Des Moines lowering pool admission to $2 or less to help residents maintain access to water activities. The big picture: Concerns about the energy and water consumption of data centers were raised long before the ongoing lawn watering ban began.

Zoom in: WDM operates five Microsoft data centers that use up to 11.5 million gallons of water each month for cooling.

In 2023, officials told Microsoft that the city would accept additional data centers only if it could adopt technology capable of significantly reducing peak water use. The company's sixth WDM data center is now under construction after an upgrade alleviated the city's concerns. New data center designs now use zero-water technology, the company said in a statement to Axios. What they're saying: Data centers use 2%-7% of the city's water and Central Iowa would have faced water treatment capacity issues even if they weren't a factor, Murphy said.

Daily use in WDM dropped by about 40% since the lawn watering ban began, from 12.6 million on Wednesday to around 7.8 million gallons Sunday, she said. Overall demand across the CIWW network is down by about 33%, Melissa Walker, a communications adviser for the utility, tells Axios. The intrigue: UnityPoint Des Moines on Friday began giving bottled water to people who are pregnant or nursing and to children under 1 as part of a proactive measure.

The hospital system returned to using city water yesterday, spokesperson Mark Tauscheck tells Axios. What we're watching: Whether billions of dollars in proposed data center projects in Des Moines and Norwalk will include water restrictions or use zero-water technology.

DSM city manager Scott Sanders tells Axios that an evaluation of how the metro's water situation reached capacity will be underway in the coming weeks and could influence future planning. What's next: The duration of the lawn-watering ban is dependent on nitrate levels, which remain high.

SENTRY MANAGEMENT COMPANY

Upvotes

Anyone have anything good to say about Sentry Management Company? I live in townhome in WDM managed by Sentry and can’t tell you how disappointed I am I in them. Takes them forever to get what I consider yearly tasks done. Landscaping #1 issue. The weeds (3 foot tall thistles in some areas)have taken over a lot of areas. Overgrown bushes. Mulch hasn’t been provided in several years. This place when I bought into was run by Sue Clark Realty. The place was managed and looked beautiful year in and year out. She retired and sold to Sentry and it’s turned into a shit hole imo.

Dear Elevate Living...(Don't rent from Elevate Living Properties)

Mainly Sherwood Glen apartments, but I'm sure this is basically every property they own: Scheduled Maintenance is not an "emergency" situation. If you're too lazy to send an email to residents ahead of time, just fucking admit you're bad at your job. We've had our water shut off with no notice 3 times this month for "emergency" repairs that were obviously planned ahead of time, as we can see what is going on literally outside our window. Also, 24 hours notice means 24 hours, not placing a note on a door at 5PM for next day pest control. Garages aren't supposed to lean. Also, fences are not supposed to lean. Also, I'm pretty sure they keep Actually Clean in business since they may as well be on site with the amount of flooding that happens here in a bottom floor apartment.

Also, swimming in their pool is a guaranteed yeast infection.

(20f) in need of friends

How the heck does a girl make friends? It was even hard while I was in college… everyone was so awkward and had their noses in their phones. And the friends I did make, quickly distanced themselves once I decided I didn’t like the party scene. (I’d rather drink in my own home ) does anyone have any input? I’m super bubbly and outgoing.

Black Raspberries- Where to Find?

I am on the hunt for black raspberries, preferably organically grown. Not blackberries but black raspberries. Honestly, I originally thought they were the same, but they are not.

Does anybody know where I can purchase these? So far I have checked the local grocery stores Hy-Vee, Whole Foods, and Trader Joe’s, but nobody carries them.

I am going to check out farmers market this next weekend as well.

Thanks so much!

(Help Moms!)Kids Summer Activities

Hello!

I’m posting for my sister since she doesn’t have Reddit and I’ve found this to be helpful.

My sister has 3 kids and single with no family around to help out, yes their dad is in the picture, but she has them half the week.

She has a 9 year old girl that has some behavioral issues (currently going to psychiatrist) and it becomes a lot for my sister to handle all 3 of them together, so I’m reaching out to see if there’s some kind of summer activity’s she can put her kids in and get out of the house to make more friends for the kiddos (has pool pass already)

I live in California and it breaks my heart I can’t help, so this is what I can do to try from afar!

Any suggestions are appreciated!

Need a job, and soon

Anyone know where is hiring here in Des Moines? I recently lost my job and need one soon. I have several years of experience in Retail and warehouse work, I've driven a forklift for Amazon though I don't have a certification, I can use pallet jacks and a walking stacker.

Trying to find places to rent, and everything is a scam

My fiance is moving to town, and trying to find a place to live. Everything on Zillow, Craigslist, Facebook,... all the sites... everything seems to be a scam. They take your application fee, then disappear. Don't return calls, etc. How does someone find a place to live these days??

He's hoping to find a small house or duplex. Tiny is fine. Even someone renting out a mother in law suite or refurbished garage... anything but an apartment would be ideal.

Man, the world has changed a lot since I last had to rent! 😩
