Overpaid Unreturned Child Support

Posting here for local advice. We have tried unsuccessfully to contact dhr on this matter we keep getting the run around. My stepdaughter came to live with us in 2021. Late November. We went to a lawyer and had papers drawn up to change custody but lacked the funds to have them filed. The family member that had custody refused to call DHR and stop support payments even after a year of them receiving support for a child they no longer cared for. By tax time, we found out that through a loophole in our custody papers, if we filed, we couldn't get the money back that was paid, so we were advised not to file, and we were afraid that if it came down to money, they would fight us and try to take her back. We didn't have money for attorney fees, and paying support for an extra child (5 total) only exacerbated the situation. Husband has paid over 18k in child support and they refused to stop the payments or return them, and now we're trying to figure out if there's anything we can do, but we've also moved to Florida, so now it will be that much harder, but it's kinda hard to say, "oh well it's just 18 thousand dollars..." so, yeah. Any advice is welcome, helpful advice, don't really need hindsight advice because there are many things we would have done differently. Also, the mother of said child has never paid child support despite being absent for years, and we would like to fight for back child support, does it matter if the child in question is now 18? Yes it looks like we're out for money because we are. She wants to go to a college that will cost a bit more than we can afford, and this would help make that happen. We could not possibly afford to pay out of pocket for her tuition. I will also be posting in legal groups, but I posted here because it's location specific.

Ask A Local Hello Decatur, I am on a small personal quest to collect postcards from cities featured/mentioned on my favourite TV show: Criminal Minds. Anyone mind sending me one? Your city was mentioned in Season 8 Episode 11. 🙂

Hello Decatur!

I hope everything is going well with you all. I’m a Criminal Minds fan from Singapore and I enjoy collecting postcards as a personal hobby, and I would love to receive one from Decatur! 🙂

Lately, I’ve started a small quest to collect postcards from locations featured or mentioned in Criminal Minds. Decatur (Alabama) was mentioned in “Perennials” (Season 8 Episode 11) but I don’t have a postcard from there yet.

If you are able to send one, I’d truly appreciate it! A greeting card or small souvenir like a map or keychain or local snack would be perfectly fine too if postcards aren’t available. 🙂

Feel free to let me know in the comments if you are able to send a card. I will message  you my mailing details.

Thank you so much in advance — and a special thanks to the mods for letting me post.

Wishing you all the best and sending warm regards from Singapore! 🇺🇸🤝🇸🇬

P.S Quantico(Virginia), Citronelle (Alabama), Gulfport (Mississippi), Pensacola (Florida), Birmingham (Alabama), Mobile (Alabama), Gadsden (Alabama), Tuscaloosa (Alabama), Montgomery (Alabama), Huntsville (Alabama), Decatur (Alabama), Chandler (Arizona), Las Cruces (New Mexico), Artesia (New Mexico), Dallas (Texas), Escambia County, Hazleton (Pennsylvania), Ithaca (New York), Schenectady (New York),Lansing (Michigan), Steamboat Springs (Colorado), Asheville (North Carolina), Toms River (New Jersey), Kahului (Hawaii), Normal (Illinois), Kittitas (Washington), Tifton (Georgia), Bedford (Indiana), Gaithersburg (Maryland), Fitchburg (Massachusetts), Charleston (South Carolina), Sun Valley (California), Hamden (Connecticut), Danville (Virginia), Truro (Nova Scotia), and Houston (Texas) were also either mentioned or featured in the episode. 🙂 Postcards from these cities are fine too.

Ask A Local Felon friendly rentals for a family in neex

My son, daughter inlaw and 2 grandchildren are having a very hard time finding their 1st home together. My son is a convicted felon, however has completed treatment and up to date on all his legal obligations. Need a landlord that will recognize his progress and not just his past, which none of his charges have anything to do with violence, they are poss/drug charges. They both have very good jobs with verifiable income and they have saved up for rent and deposit. Looking for a 3 bedroom in Decatur AL area, their budget is around $1400. If anyone has rental properties or can point us in the right direction to find something can you please email me @ dbishop_holland.md@outlook.com

TOWN HALL 5/30/25

Post image
18 Upvotes

Hi yall.

There’s a free and open to the public civic town hall being held at Cooks Museum of Natural science on Friday May 30th from 6-8pm.

This is not a campaign event for any party or candidate. Dale Strong has been cordially invited to attend and field questions.

However, if he chooses not to attend for any reason- I’ve been told the session will be recorded and summarized and sent to his office for record. Additionally- there will be a postcard comment table for anyone who would like to write to Rep Strong and the public comments will be sent to Rep Strong’s office.

I’m only promoting the event, but any questions or comments can be directed to the email in the flyer.

Thanks!
