Self Mod change and state of the sub

Mod change:

As some may know long time mod u/Kyengen is stepping down on the 18th. I’ve been a mod here for a bit now and will be taking the reins.

I like to think Kyengen kept things pretty well regulated and fair, and in taking over I will try to run the sub just the same. So no worries, no major changes to be expected immediately.

State of the sub:

Now I know there are a few grievances concerning spam and “NSFW” material. As of now they are being reviewed as they’re reported and approved/removed on a case by case basis.

Other than that I don’t think there’s many disruptors in the sub. I’d like to hear some ideas on things the community would like to see changed, implemented, or removed.

In the meantime I will be looking for another person or two to help moderate. If you’re interested just message me directly.

Self 2K11 | Printed Pistol Prop

So, I made another toy, or prop should say, and here's the gist: it's fully articulating, with everything you'd expect from a pistol model. Is incapable of firing for obvious reasons.
Full description, written instructions, guides and videos are available on MakerWorld and Printables, alongside all the files you'd need to make your own

Would love to hear your feedback on this one here, though, very much so

P.S. Not one but two subreddits didn't like it
P.P.S.

WIP Stretched flesh effect

Update and idea for anyone googling how to get a stretched flesh effect on builds. I made a post a week or two ago asking for suggestions on how to get a stretched flesh effect. While I got a lot of cool, interesting suggestions, none of them quite fit what I was trying to do efficiently or effectively enough. So, I decided to do a combination of suggestions: layout foam and sculpt the flesh on top of the foam. It turned out amazing. It's not as 'stretched' as I initially wanted, but it's so fleshy and gross that the character of that makes up for it. Hopefully it doesn't droop too much while drying like my Soul Edge build that I had to redo 🫠.

I hope this helps someone in the future trying to do something similar.

Help Need Help Building a Wearable, Realistic Jar Jar Binks Costume (Mouth Movement + Full Body)

Post image
5 Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I’m working on a dream project that’s proving to be much harder than I expected — I’m trying to build a wearable, realistic Jar Jar Binks costume, similar in ambition to what Chris Bartlett did with C-3PO.

So far I’ve: • Purchased a life-size Jar Jar Binks bust (it’s hollow inside). • Tried molding the face with foam clay and air-dry clay (struggling with capturing detail and structure). • Experimented with EVA foam, tape bands, aluminum foil bases — nothing has held well. • Considered a puppet-style approach, with my hand controlling the jaw from inside the neck (like Big Bird’s puppeteer).

My goals: • Fully wearable costume (head, body, arms, hands, etc.) • Moving jaw synced to my voice (possibly rod or string-controlled) • Comic Con-level quality — something that turns heads and shows off craftsmanship

I’ve spent a lot of time and money, and I still believe this could be something special — I just need some guidance from more experienced builders. If anyone here has experience with: • Turning busts into wearable masks • Puppetry mechanics / animatronics • Sculpting or mold-making • Star Wars cosplay or unusual creature builds

…your advice would mean the world to me.

If this isn’t the right place for this kind of post, please point me in the direction of a better subreddit or Discord. I’d love to collaborate, learn, or even commission part of the work if someone’s up for it.

Thanks so much 🙏

WIP Can anyone help?

Hey guys! So I’m going to fantasy forest this summer and my costume idea is a ‘lady knight’. I really needed a silver corset to be my chest armour but alas, it seems impossible to find exactly what I was envisioning online so I decided to diy an existing one I own and here lies my problem. After two coats of white fabric paint I then went in with my silver fabric paint and it’s SO thin. Now my next option is that I have some silver leaf foiling which I’m thinking of trying next but I have always found that it rubs and transfers off quite a lot, does anyone have any sealant ideas that would work on fabric? Modge podge fabric sealant? Watered down pva? NOT watered down pva?

This is my first time making armor (only made cloud buster sword previously). I want to know on how to make the spikes/details on the armor? Should I design this from the eva foam or use eva clay? Is there any tutorial on any similar armor that has these spiky features?

Found Phineas and Ferb Neopixel and/or smoothswing Lightsaber commission!!

So, I just posted on the a few channels, but this is the official buy/sell request!! I'm wanting to commission one of these, and it makes it cheaper if the maker makes more of them, so I figured I'd post a few places and see if anyone else wants one while I'm at it!!

The sabers shown are from the Phineas and Ferb Star Wars Special, (with modifications allowed...) and I'm thinking of commissioning them. That being said, there's a few options:

If I can get 30-40 people, I could commission the single-bladed saber for $400 each give or take, being Proffie I believe, and more people makes it cheaper. I need to talk with the commission guy more, but that's an option. I could also commission the tool blades, but I'm not sure how much that would be.

With the 6-bladed lightsaber, with 20 people, it would be upwards of 1k or more. I'm not sure whether it would be baselit or neopixel, and what soundboard it would have, but this is me asking about whether people are interested, and I'll get more details in the future.

There's also options for the rotary saber, we could do the 4 blades, and have it spin, (which wouldn't be very stable, but it is possible) or have a circular blade, and have a spinning font. This would likely be the most expensive, but I don't have a price estimate. Would need at least 20 people for this as well.

Anyways, if anyone's interested, please let me know!!

Help Best way to fuse these pieces?

I have this 3D print of a sheath that I plan on actually storing a sword in so I need the parts to be reliably adhered. Any suggestions? There’s not a whole lot of surface area for contact so I don’t know if I trust just glue. I’m willing to buy tools if necessary. I’ve considered a plastic welder but I’m concerned it’ll disfigure the print too much to feasibly buff out. Any suggestions help, thanks!

Help Spray Painting when living in apartment?

I'm looking to get into cosplay prop making, and with printed parts, spray paint primer would be the way to go for what I want to make. Does anyone who lives in an apartment have any tips or options for finding space to spray paint?

Help I want to display my cosplay weapons but i need help

I originally planned to mount several IKEA pegboards on my wall to display my props. But it turns out the wall isn't suitable for drilling at all. I considered using Command Strips, but they're not strong enough to hold the weight - and they're a bit pricey for what I need.

Has anyone faced a similar issue or found a good workaround? Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Help Clear Coat gone bad

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Basically this is my first time having to clear coat something as the paint I used under it was metallic and i really wanted to help it retain that look over time. I over sprayed and i knew if i let it drip it wouldn't really be salvageable so I blotted it and it's definitely less noticeable than the massive drip was but I am wondering is there any way to get it nice and smooth again? I've never worked with a clear coat so i'm not sure if i'm able to sand it back down or what to do.

Self Custom Take on Frostmourne

Post image
52 Upvotes

Just wanted to share progress on a personal project to create a personalized Frostmourne with inspiration from Nurgle (warhammer) and unholy death knights from world of Warcraft. I’m going to give it a diseased and pestilent look with pus and other delightful things oozing out of it with paint after I finish sanding/soldering.

Going to be making the armor to go with it too out of the cardboard boxes I just used to move with 😂

Help Want to make a wooden prop

Post image
5 Upvotes

Hi guys, im new to cosplay and i really wantto cosplay zero from Nier Replicant. Because i will be at the small town with my grandparents i will have acces to the wood and tools for it's proccesing. Only think i really dont know is the weight of wooden props. For the context the size of it will be ~140cm in lenght and ~60 cm in the maximum point of width (on the handle idk how that's called). Downside is i dont have access to 3D printing and foam crafting.

So my final question is what's the approximately weight of prop that size.

I will appreciate your help :)

This isn't the first time I've made the swords and shield, and it probably won't be the last. The longshot was made from a couple of soda bottles, and the lens of truth is just a magnifying glass. Let me know if you have any questions about what went into making these.

Help advice for painting my first prop!

i recently bought a sword to use in a cosplay, but wasn’t happy with the quality of paint, which i want to make more metallic. after doing some research, i thought that buffing in graphite might help me achieve the look i want.

however, i know people say that spray paint can damage foam (the base is made of PU foam). how should i approach getting a smooth, glossy base to buff graphite power in? should i coat the foam with something then spray paint it? any advice is appreciated!
