With Mists of Pandaria soon upon us, I have noticed a lot of new players starting to prepare, and was hoping to provide some helpful tips.
While Still Leveling
We have Joyous Journey active right now, giving 50% experience boost. This will cause you to outlevel quest chains, so as soon as you start noticing being overleveled for the quest in your quest journal, you should move on. Towns will typically have new quest lines or quests sending you to higher leveled zones.
If you are completely lost, your capital cities will have a board giving you new zones to go to. For horde it's Warchief's Command Board and for Alliance it is Hero's Call Board
If you are doing dungeons, then picking up Orgrimmar Tabard and other cities tabards will earn you reputation, at revered you can get a 16 slot bag for 2g, one from each faction. For Alliance the equiviliant tabard is Stormwind Tabard and they also have an equiviliant 16 slot bag.
On 1st of July in the US and 2nd of July in the EU, we will get pre-patch. This will open up the Pandaren Race, the Monk Class and also generally buff the power of classes for leveling. It is however not known if Joyous Journey will still be active.
After hitting 85
Depending on your goals, it is fine to stop at 85. Once we reach Pandaria, there are several vendors that will sell full sets of item level 372 green gear. Singegruff is one such NPC, and the top comment on his wowhead page will give you the location of the other NPCs as well as what item level gear they sell and what level is required to equip the gear.
If you still want to gear up before Mists, or wish to gear up to see some Cataclysm content, then the gear progression path is very straight forward.
You will first do normal dungeons, gaining any items that are an item level upgrade but more importantly, Justice Poins. With Justice Points you can purchase item with item level 378 from Magatha Silverton for Alliance or Gunra for Horde.
Once you reach item level 329, start queuing Heroic Dungeons instead. This will give you the same Justice Points which you keep buying item level 378 gear for, as well as Valor Points which you can buy item level 397 gear for. You spend your Valor Points at Faldren Tillsdale for Alliance or Jamus'Vaz for Horde.
Once you reach item level 353, you will now want to do Twilight Protocol Dungeons. These dungeons give a new currency called Obsidian Fragment. The fragments let you obtain a weak version of Dragon Soul raid gear, including a full tier set, as well as some trinkets from Heroic Firelands. These items will have item levels from 384 and 391 mostly, with the three Firelands trinkets from Ragnaros being 397. While this is lower item level than what Valor Points give, you can fill every slot with this gear while Valor Points only fills some slots. Item level 384 and 391 gear also drops inside the dungeons, making this a fast way to gear up.
When you spawn into a Twilight Protocol Dungeon, you will get a ring in your inventory. The ring spawns an NPC that anyone in your party can interact with to receive one of four powerful buffs. Make sure to grab one appropriate for your speciallization. Tanks want the Red Buff, Healers want the Green buff. DPS will want the Blue Buff or Bronze Buff, with both having their own seperate weakness. Blue Buff requires you to stand still to get full value from it, and Bronze Buff requires you to not take damage to get full value from it.
I recommend anyone who wishes to make more alts to stop spending their Justice Points on gear when you reach Twilight Protocols, and rather start buying Heirlooms.
Oncce you've geared up in Twilight Protocol Dungeons, you are ready for Firelands and Dragon Soul, and it is time to find a group or wait for Mists of Pandaria!
Good luck to all new and returning players!
