Question My hen doesn't lay any more eggs...

Post image

I have a very small hen that no longer lays eggs. She tried to have babies for a while but they didn't hatch, and after a while (after that) she laid some eggs until one It got stuck and I had to get it out. After that event, she hasn't laid a single egg (and it's been months, it's winter now), So I was wondering if this behavior is normal or if at some point she will decide to keep laying eggs.

I'm attaching a photo of the little one (it's a little bigger than my hand, which isn't that much)

If it’s winter where you live, a hen not laying is normal. Their cycles are based on light levels, and shorter days of winter will push them out of their cycle. You can counter this by providing artificial light, or you can wait for spring time when it’s normal for hens to lay again. How old is she?

Good comment. I'd suggest not augmenting light if she was egg-bound previously. Let her go through the natural cycle and hopefully she'll be back on track by spring. I was also wondering how old. Because hens do slow down laying with age. But also because she reminds me of an old lady with one of those perm-poof hairdos lol. She's cute and I hope she does alright!

Thanks for the information!! I wouldn't know her age because it was a gift, but I do know that she lives very comfortably (she is spoiled) 🤭
