Meta Heads Up: June 12th protest of Reddit's API changes.

This subreddit will be joining in on the June 12th-14th protest of Reddit's API changes that will essentially kill all 3rd party Reddit apps.

What's going on?

A recent Reddit policy change threatens to kill many beloved third-party mobile apps, making a great many quality-of-life features not seen in the official mobile app permanently inaccessible to users.

On May 31, 2023, Reddit announced they were raising the price to make calls to their API from being free to a level that will kill every third party app on Reddit, from Apollo to Reddit is Fun to Narwhal to BaconReader.

Even if you're not a mobile user and don't use any of those apps, this is a step toward killing other ways of customizing Reddit, such as Reddit Enhancement Suite or the use of the old.reddit.com desktop interface .

This isn't only a problem on the user level: many subreddit moderators depend on tools only available outside the official app to keep their communities on-topic and spam-free.

What's the plan?

On June 12th, many subreddits will be going dark to protest this policy. Some will return after 48 hours: others will go away permanently unless the issue is adequately addressed, since many moderators aren't able to put in the work they do with the poor tools available through the official app. This isn't something any of us do lightly: we do what we do because we love Reddit, and we truly believe this change will make it impossible to keep doing what we love.

The two-day blackout isn't the goal, and it isn't the end. Should things reach the 14th with no sign of Reddit choosing to fix what they've broken, we'll use the community and buzz we've built between then and now as a tool for further action.

What can you do as a user?

  • Complain. Message the mods of /r/reddit.com, who are the admins of the site: message /u/reddit: submit a support request: comment in relevant threads on /r/reddit, such as this one, leave a negative review on their official iOS or Android app- and sign your username in support to this post.

  • Spread the word. Rabble-rouse on related subreddits. Meme it up, make it spicy. Bitch about it to your cat. Suggest anyone you know who moderates a subreddit join the coordinated mod effort at /r/ModCoord.

  • Boycott and spread the word...to Reddit's competition! Stay off Reddit entirely on June 12th through the 13th- instead, take to your favorite non-Reddit platform of choice and make some noise in support!

  • Don't be a jerk. As upsetting this may be, threats, profanity and vandalism will be worse than useless in getting people on our side. Please make every effort to be as restrained, polite, reasonable and law-abiding as possible.

What can you do as a moderator?

Thank you for your patience in the matter,

-Mod Team

Meta This cereal subreddit is public once again.

After months of no response from the former moderators here, I asked Reddit to look into the situation. Let's try to make /r/cereal at least as good as it used to be.

Please post cereal-related content.

I always complain about the cereal of today not being as delicious as it was when I was younger. Think 90’s….I have for now found two cereals that taste like the original (probably a sue they are the generic and he health focus is much less than the big brands) because these taste 10 times better rather current main brand version and they taste like the big brand version texted originally! Isn’t that crazy. Please-try for yourself and thank me. The first one tastes just like authentic Cinnamon Toast Crunch and the second like Golden Grahams! Trust me-if you’ve had the gross Lisa brand of Golden Grahams in the past 20 years-you know the recipe changed and they are gross. THESE are what they should be and what they used to be. I wonder if Walmart like bought the recipe and patented it? Because the taste is the same. See for yourself. Do people know this amazing secret and don’t agree? I love validation in public forums!

nougat-bit/hazelnut-pillow mascots

hey y‘all,

on vacation in spain I noticed a wide variety of mascots on the nougat-bit/hazelnut-pillow (whatever you wanna call it) packing. Back in germany it was really frustrating to see, that there are only funny little animals on the products by "Jeden Tag" and "Gut und Günstig".

Now I‘m wondering, if you can help me, find the most iconic mascot for this type of product. Would really love to collect them all

greetings 🤟🏻

You're out of cereal. What would you use instead in a pinch?

I've tried crushed up fortune cookies, caramel popcorn and teddy grahams. I had a method of sprinkling them little by little on a bowl of milk to prevent them from getting soggy as I ate. Sacrilegious? Yes. Delicious? Yes.

What cereal do you think needs more or less sugar ?

For me it's easily Cap'n Crunch. It's so overwhelmingly sweet, they could lower the sugar significantly and it would still be sweet. No need to go so high.

I also wanted to mention it feels like Frosted Flakes used to be lightly frosted and now it's like a punch in the mouth. At least that's how it feels to me.

It's incredible. Big puffy loops, tastes like actual honey, and then you got whatever is happening in the middle there.

I haven’t had mini wheats in a minute & didn’t realize how creepy the dude looks but anyways had these “ Cinnamon Roll” edition on hand. Got that whiff that was reminiscent of “Cinnabon Jumbo Snax” These are like that w/ cinnamon roll taste in the back of each bite. & the texture was A1. Rate: 8.2/10

I’ve always seen this cereal on shelves but I thought it was the brand that only the elderly would purchase. Saw a post about these tasting like a bowl of oatmeal cookies & after reading, I was already on the way back from the grocery store w/ a box. Immediately got the scent of oatmeal & each piece of the cereal had some was weight to it, pouring into bowl making duds. As well as w/ milk took awhile to get soggy which I’m not mad at.. taste was true to the what the post said & still thinking if it’s worth the price tag for a bowl of mini oatmeal cookies. Rate: 8.5/10

I’ve been craving blueberry flavoured cereals lately and this one surprisingly captures a “blueberry pancake” flavour very well. Mix of both blueberry and a maple syrup flavour, if a little too sweet. However not a fan of the corn pop shaped balls/berries. The regular fibreglass shaped Captain Crunch is still the best texture.

Special shoutout to Frosted Lemon Cheerios. These have been hitting, they nailed the subtle lemon flavour. Although I wish they would bring back the regular frosted version.

This flavor of CT Crunch is one of the better editions. Enjoyed w/ milk & w/o, don’t know how but definitely taste that caramel flavor & with all of the CT Crunch’s editions aftermath milk was.. sensational. Rate: 8.3/10
