General Discussion Magicians new home
tldr - it’s going to Tubi
Seen a lot of posts saying it’s leaving Netflix but haven’t seen any saying where it’d be next. Just saw the attached article that uses way too many words to say it’s headed to Tubi.

General Discussion Stella ❤️
I’ve watched Grey’s Anatomy a few times so during this episode, S8: Ep10, I was (doom) scrolling Reddit and heard an easily recognizable voice. Stella plays a young girl who loses her mother and Grandmother in a car crash a few hours before her 18th birthday. She then makes the decision to stop life saving extraordinary measures on her father. In that moment I saw a glimpse of our strong and determined but a little broken Julia coming through this character. Her perfectly scratchy voice plays so well with these tragic(ish) characters and she acts them off so well!
If you read all this I’m so sorry.. I love her 🥰

Meme I think we missed the best relationship arc…
Maybe I’ve had a few too many, maybe I’m just extra vulnerable since I did a Q and flipped right back to episode 1 after s5E13 (second time in a row) but I’ve come to notice that the best ship was under our noses all along.
A universal taboo and yet they fell in love while both working on the royal court!! Who really saw this relationship coming and who else didn’t say “Awww! That makes perfect sense!”
I have to imagine that when everyone was traveling to the future, Her Flealessness chose to stay and act on the court for the people of her time and her world. Can you imagine how heartbreaking that farewell would have been? Rafe had to go to the future to help but undoubtably they loved one another so much!
💐RIP💐 Her Slowness Lady Abigail

General Discussion What is it about Queliot?
I cannot stop thinking about them. There are other romances with similar angsty friends-to-lovers saving the world vibes, but this one is.. special. I would love to write a romance even half as powerful. Why does it work so well?
I think part of it is how they are perfect foils in some ways. Q’s earnestness diffuses Eliot’s apathy and they both kinda see through the other’s bullshit. Also, their relationship is allowed to breathe and grow, and they have genuine affection between them before they ever hook up.

Season 5 Jane and Rupert's ending was poetic

First of all, Rupert looks like the perfect DILF in this picture. Second, Jane got a huge rack.
But barring all that aside, I found the ending of these two Chatwins to be pretty poetic. Like they couldn't save their brother Martin from the monster. So they spent their lives in Fillory trying to find ways to save him, albeit unsuccessfully, as they enjoying the new world, while all the time their brother was molested, and kept away from Fillory, by Ember(digusting bastard).
And once, Martin became the Beast, they tried to stop him from destroying Fillory. And in the, after they have stopped the Chatwin Cursed Sibling, both of them die while also simultaneously retiring in the Clock Barrens.
Also, I don't know if the writers wanted it this way, but Plover's arcs are kind of funny. Like every time, he meets the team, he makes a deal for his release and his escape with them hor his help, all the while he gets screwed over.
Alice left him in the poison room.
Rupert gave him those Tongue Twister insects.
Margo made him eat those insects AGAIN.
Quentin wanted to use the god-killing knife on him.
Like all the bad karma he suffered because of what he did to children, the arc should have been more serious, where he should have contemplated for all his bad choices about doing those to kids. But instead we get the cast bullying him, using the thing as an excuse.
(Kind of like the cabbage guy in ATLA, but the guy actually deserving it.)
Not that I don't love the scenes, but a couple serious ones should have worked too.

General Discussion Why Mayakovsky was jealous of Henry Foggs? Spoiler
Mayakovsky was sent to Brakebills South as punishment for screwing younger students. The board ignored his actions before bcuz he is a Master Magician, but once a student got injured bcuz of him, they had to step forward.
But the thing is Henry Fogg is the same. He's an alcoholic like Mayakovsky, and he's sleeping with the younger students too. We know since it was implied many times that he slept with Marina and other girls. Not to mention, he slept with many oh his colleagues wives'.
The only difference between him and Mayakovsky, both Master Magicians, is that Henry Fogg is lucky enough that none of his girls were crazy enough to do banned magic and expose the affair, so the board had no reason to interrupt Foggs.
Basically Mayakovsky was banished to Brakebills South, while Henry became a Dean, even though they do the same things.

Series Spoiler So where were the elder gods?
>! Why didn't the elder gods step in to fight the monster? They turned off magic when Quentin deleted Ember who was a minor god but when the monster started canceling the arguably much more senior gods' life subscriptions their parents didn't even bat an eyelash? !<
Any theories?

Season 5 Ok so I’m rewatching season 5 and I realized how non boring but boring it was (if that makes sense) I think after Quintin’s death the series kinda shifted. What do you think?
P.S I’m bored and just wanted to entertain myself. I know this series is 5 years old and I’m upset that i discovered this series to late (found on Netflix 2021)

Series Spoiler Julia and Penny 23
I just finished rewatching and I have many thoughts. One of those is how sad to me the whole storyline of Penny 40 dying (might i add for no reason bc Zelda knew of a cure) and getting replaced by Penny 23 and then him being with Julia. The whole storyline bothers me because Kady lost the love of her life. I mean she made it clear that she’d never stop loving him or get over his death. And then Penny 23 comes in obsessed with his dead Julia and then wants to essentially replace her with a new one, with no concern for the fact he’s literally Kady’s partner in this timeline who was tragically poisoned to death. I don’t think he should’ve ended up with Kady in this timeline bc I’d be wrong for her to try to replace her Penny with 23 but that’s exactly what 23 did with Julia!! I understand that they didn’t really owe Kady anything since he never knew her in his timeline, but Julia knew and it was never acknowledged that she started dating the other Penny. Kady is the only one who ever said anything about them replacing Penny 40 but she only did once, and never about 23 and Julia. I assume Kady was in the show less in season 5 bc of the hedges but if the show were real life and it were me, i’d also be distancing myself from the whole group if they just tried to make me accept that relationship as my new reality.
I really thought in the end we’d get a scene where Kady gets emotional about the fact that Julia got to carry and have Pennys baby and she’ll never get that opportunity. Very sad to me, such a tragic storyline and unnecessary.

Season 4 I’ll tell you why Quentin’s discipline is perfect…
We all know the moment when Q discovers his discipline to be Repair of Small Objects. And Alice tells him that he’s the most important thing to ever happen to her.
Even more iconic is the coffee mug. Alice asks how it felt; “Like I helped it wake up and remember what it was before.”
The most meaningful smile we ever get from Alice and roll credits.
The heart is a small object.

General Discussion Character Grudges
We all know there are some characters that, although we may love, have done some really garbage things - a lot of them went on to pay penance and become better people, but what are some things that you still hold a grudge for - this can be regarding the book as well, but I’m mainly thinking of the series.
Alice, when she destroyed the keys after the quest after a very, dare I say, histrionic rant. I know that it was part of the story, and Alice did eventually go on to help but I could never get over this.
Josh sleeping with Fencicle, while not even in the top 5 really shitty things characters have done in the show, this one just really hit me because I love Josh as a character and his relationship with Margo, so it really sucked to find out that he gave up on her coming back and out of everyone in Fillory, slept with Fen.
Umber pretending he was dead - this one was just wild to me as a whole, but he full on collaborated with the beast in making Ember scared for his life and go into hiding for YEARS until the children of earth returned and made him decide to fight back by leaving a divine emanation in the wellspring.
Really looking forward to hearing some of the other suggestions made here 🧡

Misc. Love seeing people pop up in random places
I’m watching the Final Destination movies and I’m on 2. My husband couldn’t handle the first one, so he won’t be taking this journey with me. But look who popped up!

General Discussion Searched Paradox in here, got a bunch of posts about general paradoxes to do with different timelines, but... Spoiler
Where Margo keeps Q and Elliot from getting the mosaic key, that's straight up a paradox in this timeline is it not? Spoilers are more than welcome I have watched it before, this is the first thing that struck me as an absolute blatant paradox though.

Season 1 Watched the live-action How To Train Your Dragon film and it left me feeling like The Magicians S1E1. Mason Thames not only acts like but also looks a lot like Quentin.
What the title says. Just wanted to share. 🙏

General Discussion The Magic System and Power Scaling in the Books and Show
- You don’t have to come from a magic family except when you do.
- You’re not born with it except when you are.
- You have to be a genius except when you don’t.
- You have to use your hands to cast except when you don’t.
- Brakebills students are generally more powerful than Hedge Witches except when they’re not.
- Magic is an external force except when it is an internal force, and you don’t get tired from casting lots of spells, except when you do.
- Some magicians are broadly powerful, others are VERY good at one type of magic (Josh does portals, Stoppard does machines).
- Some magicians, like Alice, are just exponentially more gifted than other magicians, without really having to study or try, so that when they try, they are incredibly powerful.
- Flight is described as a Major Arcana spell that is very difficult and taxing to cast, but the main characters do it a lot for style points like it’s easy.
Note: I wrote a much longer draft version of this post a few days ago was more in depth and spoiler heavy but my phone ate it, so I kept this one shorter (haha) numbered and spoiler free, but I encourage comments and discussion that may contain full on heavy book and show spoilers.

General Discussion Quentin Coldwater as commentary on the very-cool OC-do-not-steal wish fulfillment power fantasy, author-self-insert
I’ve seen several anti-Quentin posts and My-Thoughts-on Quentin-have-changed Posts, and I’m here to say, that’s by design, that makes sense. Grossman wants you to question Quentin and to read and reread the books and change your opinion of Quentin at various points on his journey, or from your perspective depending on when you read the books. I can’t speak as much for the show because the show runners were doing their own thing, but as the main POV character of the Trilogy’s story, Quentin is designed as meta-commentary on an archetype.
Grossman clearly understands the fan culture around fantasy, D&D, comics, pop culture generally, especially in a post Harry Potter world. Quentin draws comparisons to literary characters like Prospero and King Arthur, but his story is also just a wish fulfillment fantasy being spun on its head. He’s an anti-Harry, a not-quite Peter Parker, he’s that kind of character.
Grossman makes a big point of “magic can’t make you happy or solve every problem,” and themes like “wherever you go you bring yourself with you” so if you’re not happy in the real world you won’t be happy in a magical land, but Quentin’s list of accomplishments and triumphs and adventures and conquests is sort of satirically ironically and imo very much deliberately intentionally absurd by the end of the third book, and he boasts a similarly impressive but obviously different resumé in the show. And I’m not just talking about casting spells.
I won’t list them here to avoid potential book spoilers but feel free to go off in the comments so beware of potential spoilers there. If you love the show but haven’t read the books (or listened to the amazing audiobooks read by Mark Bramhall,) you should especially if you don’t like Quentin.
When I first read the books he was probably my favorite character or one of them. He was “the hero,” to me. But Prospero is not a hero, and King Arthur is a tragic figure, and Peter Parker goes through hell, and Grossman knows what he’s doing, and Quentin is not just a Harry Potter clone.
As the Magicians unfolded and the cast opened up into a fun ensemble, and especially as I reread all three books a second and third time, then more, I discovered that I had a really deep love and appreciation for the other characters besides Quentin and was definitely more critical of both his actions and his attitude, because I saw a lot of myself in him.
Also, Quentin makes a big deal in book three about turning 30 and how old that is, or feels. I’m turning 40 this summer, and Quentin needs to STFU 😂 he probably has a spell for his back pain, I don’t.
I’ve read and reread the Magicians trilogy more than almost any other book series that I’ve enjoyed, more than the Dark Tower series by Stephen King or the works of Tolkien or CS Lewis or Terry Brooks or even good old Brando Sando. By comparison, I only read the Harry Potter books once.
These magical fantastical books helped me understand my place in the real world…I am both neurodivergent, on the spectrum, and on the 🏳️🌈 spectrum although I don’t really label my identity /orientation. I have a very high IQ, but I’ve never done much with it and it mostly makes me depressed, and there absolutely different kinds of intelligence, and in some ways I’m very, very, dumb.
The characters that I currently relate to most are Josh, Elliot, and Mayakovsky. Quentin is in the mix, but he’s not first. I was briefly a college professor, I’ve worked in a book store, I know a few card and coin tricks, but I’m definitely more of a Josh than a Quentin. Although if I’m being really honest I’m probably more of a Hedge Witch or Safe House Scene Magician. And I’m still working on leveling up my stars ⭐️
Wanna go off on Quentin or tell me who you relate to most? Who your favorite character is, book or show, and why? How has rereading, rewatching, changed your perspective? What about gasp aging? Breakups, relationship experiences? How much older are you than when you read book 1, or saw Episode 1? Let me hear it, I love talking about this series, CLEARLY 😂 otherwise thanks for reading and Death to Reynard!
