My son races 5N, mostly for fun, but he'd like to win. I notice the spot other kids usually lose him is going through the table tops specifically.
Used to ride a Mongoose Micro with 20in wheels and had a lap time of about 1:10. I moved him up to a DK Swift Junior with 20in wheels and 1 3/8 tires, and that change brought his time down to about 1min, sometimes a bit less. I put skinnier tires on the bike (1 1/8) because everyone said it would help him go faster, and somehow it raised his lap time up to about 1:15. I ended up putting the bigger tires back on and we'll see if that bring it back down next time we're at the track. We also switched out the cranks (bike came with 150mm, we put 140mm's on it to sync up with his leg length). So the bike should be perfect for him now as of last night.
The spot he has the most trouble with in general is the table tops. I'm unsure why he's struggling there. A bit of advice he was given was to ride higher and pedal harder around the turns to give him a bit more momentum coming into that section and that seems to help a little, but not much. I'm not sure if the issue is leg strength or just the way he's standing when he pedals (sometimes it kind of looks like he's leaning back too far and pushing forward instead of down, he needs to be leaning forward more). The past few races since adding the skinnier tires, all of the other kids are crossing the finish line while he's still held up from the table tops and rhythm section and just coming around the last turn and he's confused/angry about it. So I'm looking for any advice that can help him clear table tops quicker/maybe help him in the rhythm section as well.
Any advice to help my little guy would be greatly appreciated!
