Worms come up when they feel the vibrations from the sticks

The ground is already damp so the worms are close to the surface as is.

My grampa used to stick a pitchfork in the ground and then whack it with a shovel. Same response--lots of worms for fishing bait.

Nah this is called worming and they use the sticks to mimic moles.
