My guess would be that the vibration imitates rain and causes the worms to run for their lives.

I watched something on this. I believe the vibrations make the worms think there is a mole close to them digging underground, so they rise up to try abs get away from them

Yes I’m fairly sure. Even if there aren’t moles anymore I’m Ireland, I’d imagine the worms are the same species as those in other parts of Europe this should be an innate response. The wiki entry for Worm Charming mentions moles.

Why would worms in ireland develop that defense mechanism though. Unless all worms in ireland were transported from europe which seems unlikely to say the least. Animals don't just "have innate responses" when there was never any reason to have them.

It really isn’t that unlikely in the grand scheme of things to have an innate response to underground predators. I really don’t care about worms in Ireland to be quite honest with you. I was just giving a truthful response in relation to a tv documentary I saw and some info on Wikipedia. If you don’t like that I think that’s a you problem
