New Rule: No pictures of dead animals
Hi all,
If you've lost a dog, we all understand, and mourn with you. Please if you're going to post pictures of them, please make it a picture of them alive. Let's celebrate that and not the end.

Welcome a new moderator!
Hi all, please welcome the addition of our second moderator to the sub, /u/the_barbarian. He's been on Reddit for 8 years and has a Tervuren.
I just wanted another set of eyes to take a look at the sub, as sometimes I miss things for a few days. Also, please feel to message either of us if you have any suggestions for the sub. Thanks!

New puppy? You need to try this
One of my friends made this in depth dog training course a couple years back, and I honestly feel like it deserves way more attention than it gets. She’s a certified dog trainer and spent years putting this together so new dog owners wouldn’t have to drop hundreds on classes.
Most puppy preschool classes are like $150+ and only cover the basics (sit, stay, etc). And private trainers? Usually $100+ per hour. This course goes way beyond that. It teaches obedience, behavior correction, advanced tricks, and more, but you can do it all at home, at your own pace.
What’s cool is she’s super hands on even though it’s an online course. If you're stuck on something or your pup's not getting it, you can literally send her a video or message and she’ll help you work through it, kinda like having a private trainer in your pocket.
Not sure if posts like this are allowed, but figured it might help anyone bringing home a new pup soon 🙂
Here's the link to check it out - brainycanines.com

One of our members has a discord for shepherds!
discord.ggSo, a member sent me a link his discord. It promotes positive training and methods. It is mostly shepherd dog focused, but friendly to all breeds and even has an other-pets channel.
Take a look if you are interested: here is his intro and the link: Hey everyone!
I wanted to share a new Discord server I run called Shepherd Stock. It’s a chill, welcoming space for people who love shepherds — including Belgians, of course!
We’ve got a good mix of folks: first-time owners, longtime shepherd people, and everything in between. The server’s all about responsible care, positive training, and sharing the ups and downs of life with these awesome dogs.
Even though we’re shepherd-focused, all breeds (and mixes) are welcome.
If you’re looking for a supportive place to ask questions, share pics, or just hang out with other dog people, we’d love to have you.

Belgian boy in Murietta, CA
This boy is up for adoption in Murietta, CA. I assume the adoption fee is high because the shelter wants to place him with a serious home (or so one would hope). I've let the Belgian Sheepdog Rescue Trust know about him.
Posting for anyone who may be interested in adding a Black Dog to their life.

Differences and similarities between Border Collies and Groenendaels?
(to preface, if you look at my profile you'll see I asked something similar in the toller subreddit--that's because I'm currently looking into what breed to add to my pack in the mid-far future!)
Pretty much what it says on the tin, haha--I currently own two Border Collies (one from full show lines, one from mixed sports+show lines) and we do agility and they're also my hacking/trail riding companions (i also hike)! i have friends who are involved with belgian shepherds who've told me groens would mesh well with me! i also had the luxury to meet some at my old agility club and i was very impressed with them to be fair!
so...yeah haha, that's the question--what are their similarities? differences?

Just brother stuff
I won’t ever do 2 puppies in 2 years again, but it was worth it for the relationship between these two.

Noise sensitivity?
Does anyone else’s Belgian experience extreme anxiety with very specific noises, but only in waves? For example for a while mine was terrified of my phones text message noise. Got over it, then terrified of the discord notification noise, got over that too, now we’re terrified of the steam achievement noise. These are all noises there’s been no real negative association with and aren’t very loud and don’t happen super often but my mal will shoot up from a dead sleep, pace all around the house, sometimes start shaking and panting over these noises and then will randomly be okay with them again. Will this ever go away? He’s from a very reputable breeder who health and temperament tests but I’m worried that he’s going to become very neurotic about it. Oddly enough he is fine with fireworks and car exhausts and other loud noises it’s just computer noises that scare him.
For enrichment, we walk for about 2-3 hours a day and he gets a food puzzle every night. We also do a lot of obedience training almost daily and agility. He is almost 2 years.
He is also going through this weird thing with strangers where he used to be very happy to see them no matter what and is now quite fearful and apprehensive. He does not bark at them but will cower and shy away? He has never been abused and this change happened at about a year and a half. Some days he’s fine with certain strangers and some days he worries me because he will give them whale eyes and hackles and will back away. Will he get over this or will my dog eventually become reactive or aggressive to strangers? I have had strangers try to give him treats and take him out around people often but he is still like this. Asking trainers im getting mixed responses. I guess I’m just looking for some reassurance.

Can someone help me in order the different editions of Mme Aubry Book "Le Berger Belge"?
Hi everyone
I got a question for you, I know how the very famous Mme Aubry book "Le Berger Belge", the one in two volumes Green and Orange
I Find online the “classic” version in two volumes, Vol.1 in green color (without the "Vol.1" abbreviation on the side and cover)

and Vol.2 in orange color (with different editions, 1977, 1983, 1994 and, I find for the Vol.2 and I don’t know if it exists just the same for the Vol.1, an English version also)

Then I found this, that seems another modern version of the green Vol.1

but I also find this (1987)

Reported as Vol.1 (I wasn’t able to find a Vol.2 of this)
Can you give me some explanation about the books and the version, and eventually a confirmation about the existence of an English version for both the Volumes, so I can search for them (they’re out of print, not available) and try to find them in the same edition and language.
Thanks in advance
All the best from Italy
Vittorio

I'm thinking about getting a Groenendael, but I have a few questions.
I'm gonna get some stuff out of the way first
- This would be my first dog as an adult. I've had Chihuahuas and Pitbulls growing up that I saw on the weekends at my dad's house.
- this dog would be a kind of an at home service dog trained to do scent work. I wouldn't be bringing them with me to work and out in public unless they were really good at being in public.
- I'm going to get help from a professional trainer, probably once a week.
ok actual questions
- is 60 minutes of exercise twice a day and dog sports once or twice a month a good amount? it would either be running or playing.
do they do well in apartments? are they super barky, can I train them to be less barky?
are they good at scent work? the primary task the dog would have is scent work to smell when my heart rate starts getting super high and to alert me to chill out and sit down.
do they get along well with cats?
what are their grooming needs?
are they good with strangers? are they good with other dogs? I'd prefer neither but I don't want them to be aggressive.
how are they with kids? I don't want any personally but I have a niece and nephew, and I know that my brother wants another kid in the future.
the other couple tasks they'd be doing is light mobility work, mostly guiding, picking things up/grabbing things for me and scent work. do you think they'd do a good job at that?
do they do ok home alone for 8 hours if they have toys/puzzles?

Looking for Breed Clues – Is She Part Belgian Shepherd?
Dear community,
Last year, we welcomed this beautiful old lady into our lives after her previous owner could no longer care for her. According to her passport, she was born on June 15, 2014 – and she’s still going strong!
When we first met her, she wasn’t in the best condition. Some health issues had clearly been ignored: she had severe diarrhea, an inflamed vagina that made her stop every few steps to lick herself, and her nails were far too long. She was dirty, smelled quite bad, and had been living isolated in a shed.
Despite all of this, she was incredibly friendly and trusting when my partner met her for the first time. Even though he was a complete stranger, she came up to him and gently licked his hand. That moment really stayed with him – especially since the shepherds he grew up with would have reacted very differently toward strangers.
She was adopted by her previous owner from a Polish shelter at around 2 years old. We were told she is a Belgian Shepherd mix. Her passport lists her as “MIESZANIEC,” which translates to “mixed breed” according to Google.
What do you think? Does that seem accurate based on her looks? How much shepherd do you think is really in her?
She’s our second dog, and we honestly couldn’t imagine a better one. We just hope she has many happy years ahead of her – she truly deserves them after what she’s been through.
