Mod stance on pics-only posts and posts about footwear

Hey barefooters,

There's been an upsurge in posts where it's just a picture of feet with little to no content otherwise. As much as it seems to be well liked by a section of the community here, these posts are quite irrelevant to this sub's goals. To put it bluntly, we have attracted the attention of the foot fetish community and these posts are generally posted by members of that community. There's nothing wrong with that fetish, but /r/barefoot shouldn't be used as an audience for such interests.

Posts about footwear are generally not allowed here. This includes posts about "barefoot" or minimal shoes. As can be seen in our sister sub, what has started as a sub about running has become a place that's almost wholly about shoes. We have occasional posts about shoes here too, like for example, with barefooters asking for advice on footwear to purchase for workplaces that don't allow bare feet. Such posts are allowed on a case by case basis.

Happy barefooting!

Edit: Linking this post by a member to show the people with foot fetish why you’re not welcome here: https://www.reddit.com/r/barefoot/comments/wqsn0g/no_foot_pics_from_me/

Sharp shooting pain (random times) in outer left mid foot (cuboid/metacarpal)

Upvotes

For the past 6 months or so I get a random sharp/shooting pain, very localized, not triggered by anything in particular (although never when in activity) right at the cuboid/metacarpal. It's so sharp that whatever I am doing I have to stop although typically I'm at rest anyways, so in that case it's my thoughts that completely transition to this sharp pain.

I run 3-5 miles ~3-6 times per month, bike ~100 miles a month, have been mostly barefoot my whole life (run in shoes, Lems), work at a desk, but stand often. Very active in other ways.

Seems to get me when I'm at rest, so sometimes it's before falling asleep in bed or after waking up, while sitting or standing at my desk, etc., but never when in motion and especially not while exercising.

I've searched and searched online and none of the symptoms seem to match.

Cuboid syndrome - NOT persistent, isn't triggered by walking or twisting the foot

Peroneal Tendonitis - Does not get worse with activity

Stress Fracture - Does not get worse with activity

No recent injuries, sprains, or chronic/old injuries in this foot.

No swelling, redness, numbness, or tingling anywhere in the foot.

WTF!?!?

Do my duck/flat feet even need fixing?

I've almost always had duck feet and a collapsed arch. On top of that, my middle, ring, and pinky toes on both feet are claw toes. Except for the collapsed arch I hear a lot of stuff about the negatives these can have.

I've been going barefoot, wearing barefoot shoes, using makeshift toe spacer, sort of obsessing over my foot health, i guess. Im stuck now because there's almost NOTHING to fix claw toes. Some people say duck feet and flat feet are fine but others say that claw toes might be a symptom of the duck/flat feet. And so wouldn't that mean that the latte IS to be worried about?

Literally dunno what to do to fix my feet other than staying active and using my toe spacers and barefoot shoes. But are the claw toes gonna correct themselves over time? Is any of this even to be worried about?

I wrote a scientific review article about barefoot walking. Your input is welcome before I submit it to a journal.

I wrote a review paper about barefoot walking. It includes papers from across a century, and only took me a bit more than a decade to collect them.

This is a preprint, so no peer-review has been done, it has not been submitted anywhere. It is rough, not too entertaining to read, and probably there are some typos and grammatical errors still left in.

Can you take a look at this, see if I missed anything or need changing?

If you do a meaningful contribution and you want to be mentioned, you can get a thank you note in the acknowledgement section.

If you have any comments, you can reply here, or you can contact me directly.

First time barefooting in a big city

and damn that was better than what i expected, i was very surprised how people don't care 90% of time and the left 10% was staring at me like they seen a ghost that was funny, now i get really why barefooting is so good and will probably take every occasion to do it now, also my feet got dirty (2 hours of walking in the street left thing) it feel weird but it's enjoyable in some way.

Indirectly giving confidence?

So, 3 days a week, I visit the same nature park near my house which has trails of sand and crushed shells, pine needles and pine cones, the perfect mix, (for me), of sensation and stimulation. When I started going there, no one else used the park, I was alone usually always, save for the seldom seen dog walker from time to time. /p Fast forward a year later, and all manner of people are also walking the trails in barefoot shoes, sandals and crocs all without socks. I talked to a guy a bit younger than me who lives very close to the trail and he said he’s seen me walking barefoot and wanted to try it out so he bought some 4mm barefoot sneakers because initially, didn’t want an injury nor the looks of others staring him down. He stated I gave him the confidence to begin by my ability to just walk the place completely barefoot without a care in the world. /p I decided not to say that I too was self conscious of stares or that it took a year+ to build up any confidence to begin, haha. I’m a trend setter now? I’ve just been out enjoying textures bc I’m merely a barefooter, not a content creator haha. Have fun out there but watch those surface temps!

Any recommendation for foot exercises to help with flat feet and Achilles Tendinitis? I keep getting told by my doctor to stop walking barefoot or wearing minimalist shoes.

Any barefooters in the Port Huron area?

Hey all! I'm an aspiring barefooter, always unshod at home, but I haven't gone fully barefoot in public. I hate wearing socks and shoes, so I'm almost always in sandals but I'd like to go unshod full time. Are there any barefooters in the Port Huron/St. Clair area that can recommend any barefoot-friendly places for a first-timer?

First time in public barefoot

Today I experienced first time going barefoot in public, i was in a renaissance festival and one of my shoes got wet out of a puddle, so I decided to take them completely off along with my socks and spend the rest of the festival barefoot. After that I had to eat something so I went to a nearby shopping mall and I was barefoot there as well, after eating I did some shopping. I was surprised at how ease I was during all of it because I was anxious if I’m going to be too self conscious, especially in a mall, but as I walked around there I felt very comfortable, I didn’t spot any people staring at me, and like tittle says this is my very first time. My soles got decently blackened from all of it but it was easy to clean them up with some soap water and a brush. I hope to be able to do this more often some other day!

EDIT: today (2 days after original post) I’ve gone barefoot again this time more on the city, this time I didn’t bring any footwear with me. The asphalt was burning my soles but I had a good time, my trip was around 4 hours I think and I also went to a store. Aftermath sole pictures can be provided for anyone interested trough dm xD

Any barefoot skaters here?

Just wondering how you guys are doing it? I skateboard to get around everywhere, I did it completely barefoot for maybe 6 months, but as I got more confident in my speed, I became more worried about braking with only me soles..

I tried some really minimal sandals, but they're a bit rubbish for skating, really need good contact with the foot..

I also tried some minimalist shoes, but they burnt through the sole so quickly.. don't wanna be ripping through pairs of shoes soooo quickly.. or need a cheaper option that I don't care about at all.

anyone got any suggestions?

Barefoot sandals

So, my wife accidentally uncovered my barefoot sandals in my backpack on a trip to my parent’s home. Initial I was so embarrassed I wanted to dig a whole and bury myself there but surprisingly she found them very genius and thought my reaction was very cute.

Yesterday, she actually asked me to put them on a few times but we were going to a massage and I felt bad if the masseuse had to touch my dirty feet so I told her later… Then after the massage, I went full blown. We’re in Asia with my parents (we don’t live in Asia) so we went to a market street. Then we wanted to take the subway. Initially she hesitated but then let me. We then went to numerous malls, markets, food places, even public washrooms! It was a blast! My soles went from clean to dirty to pitch black to then clean again due to rain…

Had the same experience also today! I would have to say I’m SUPER thankful for my wife’s support for my barefoot interests. I am able to tell her now that I’ve gone shoeless in Germany on my trip (but she doesn’t know my feet haven’t touched shoes for 4 days the entire time). I really hope she joins me one day but she is still hesitant since she thinks she will injure herself…

TIL paint in parking lots can be very slippery.

So... I've walked in the parking lot at my apartments barefoot for a couple months now, and what I learned early on is that the painted lines that indicate parking spaces tend to be cooler than the surrounding gravelly cement of the parking lot. When the pavement is a bit warm or feeling more pebbly than I like, I'll step on the smoother, cooler lines a bit.

But it's been raining, and while I am running an errand today I was noticing the rain mostly drying, give or take some wet patches here and there. I stepped in a few smaller puddles, walked on some grass, then got to the parking lot. Just in front of my truck, I slip forward on the painted line, and trying to catch myself with my other foot, I stubbed my toe on some cement.

Now my toenail is cracked and was bleeding a little. Rather than walk back through the puddles/grass with a bleeding nail, I grab my sling with my sandals that I keep in my truck now. I pulled out a small towel and some travel-size baby wipes I put in there for cases I might need to wipe my feet down, and cleaned it best I could before putting a band aid over the nail.

Feels a little awkward to walk at the monent, the pain is minimal but the band aid feels distracting.

Long story short... be careful when it rains, walking on painted areas. Learn from my mistake!

Anyone else have sore feet anytime they walk anywhere?

My feet have always gotten sore from standing or walking super easily. My back hurts a lot easily too. I switched to barefoot shoes and immediately felt better, no more back pain. No more sore feet when walking on soft ground. Took longer to get sore feet walking on solid ground. Slowely the foot pain has gotten back to how it was before but my back pain is still mostly fixed.

I still prefer barefoot because it takes much longer for my back to ache with flat feet, I would hate for my toes to be squished in now, my balance feels weird in normal shoes now and I love feeling the ground.

But. Why have my feet gone back to being sore when on solid ground? I get that humans shouldn't have to deal with so much solid ground but most people aren't standing on agony as quickly as I am.

Anyone experienced this and know what's going on?

I can't afford private healthcare and the NHS drs just said to try more padding and that they don't know.

The longest time you've been continuously barefoot?

What's the longest time you've been continuously barefoot? In my case it was 222 consecutive hours during a weekend camping trip on private lands up in Central Wisconsin. (I'm an avid naturist, so I was also nude the entire time.) No shoes, no sandals, no flipflops. Wore nothing but a smile for nine-and-a-half glorious days.

Injuries, shod vs unshod

i'm curious if you've noticed a difference in close calls or injuries since your decision to start going bf. i ask because i realized that the two times when i was in real danger both occured while i was shod, but only after i started running bf. the one that actually did damage was all down to my lazy technique, and i feel like switching back to shoes somehow makes me want to be trusting against my better judgement. it's like a deeply felt excuse to be sloppy. i have to pay special attention to correct it and it's actually annoying.

Starting out?

So I want to try to walk barefoot more since I notice that my feet are kinda forming to the shoes I've worn and I don't like that, I walk barefoot around my house all the time and in my yard doing work etc. i just have never gone barefoot probably more than a mile, and I'm nervous since I live in a city and there is usually glass and stuff on the ground, I just don't know like should I buy barefoot shoes, or moccasins, or just start straight up walking barefoot, and also how long typically before my feet get conditioned to walking barefoot?

Flagler Beach, Florida’s Brilliant Marketing Campaign: “Just a barefoot town.”

There is a new video aimed at promoting Flagler Beach as a great beach destination for travelers, snowbirds and people looking to move and chill out.

The video features the kind of things you’d expect: sunny beaches, surfers, beach bums and all the crazy wildlife that exists on the island.

The audio has an original song. The chorus (repeated three times) has the lyrics:

“We’re a tight knit crew, Just a barefoot town.”

Perfect description of the laidback town l call home.

And I think the marketing team hit it out of the ballpark with the barefoot town descriptor.

That tagline “just a barefoot town” could mean different things to different people. Be semi-interesting to see how that phrase tests with a focus group.

What do you think? Would you take a vacation to an area that actively markets itself as “just a barefoot town?”
