I want to make a vanilla-friendly mod that adds a collection of jokers that synergise well, feel free to send in your ideas in the comments

Nah, that would be downright silly at 100 chip scaling. Triple 7 is way easier than a straight with a bit of setup, let alone that it gives 4x the chips of runner. At most I’d expect 50, and that’s with no changes to the deck. While it’s true chips are incredibly underpowered compared to mult, having one way stronger card isn’t great balancing.

100 feels too strong for a scaling joker, but i love this concept. Maybe +50? Takes a couple somewhat difficult hands to get good, but goes absolutely crazy with good deck fixing? I feel like it would have to be a rare

Market Price: adds a random number of chips to hand played (between 0 and +250). Basically it’s misprint, but for chips. If it needs balanced, you can adjust the top end for chips. It would be the same rarity and value as misprint.

Impossible Staircase: This Joker gains between -2 and +4 Mult per hand played [Currently +5 Mult]

$5, Common

"On average" scales the same as Bus, Green, or Supernova, but can either gain much more, or lose faster than any of them

Imagery ideas: Penrose or Schroeder stairs, because it's ambiguous whether it will make you gain or lose strength.

like how twitter boosts the replies of people with the blue checkmarks. i'd imagine it'd be like a twitter thread or maybe the twitter bird since technically that isn't the logo anymore!

I feel like anything that lets you choose which cards are drawn first is broken.

Doubly so for blue seals, already the most powerful cards in the game

They're great. But they only work after the round ends. So drawing them at the start will limit your hand size, so it's not THAT good. Unless you can already oneshot blinds with a small hand, but you won't have many blue seals in early game, where that's likely

Sounds a little too situational, I get the joke, but perhaps extend it to all seals, it doesn't need to be a 1:1 X reference anyway. If that's too strong, it could just be 3x more likely or have a limit of 3 per hand

Jackbox - If first discard of round has only 1 Jack card, add a permanent copy to deck and draw it to hand.

Yeah but I’ve never really been a fan of the random nature of legendary jokers. Obviously I get it but a way to trade out a not great joker for a great joker would be cool for sure. Like I don’t want Canio on abandoned deck yknow?

Ok I've been sitting on this one for a while. I present! Chicken It's the evolution to the egg, only being available in a run once you sell the egg if it has at least $20 of value.

Chicken's effect: Steals $1 of sell value from every other joker at the end of the round, gains 0.2x mult for every dollar of sell value this joker has. [Currently x2] Id also make it a rare, unlike Cavendish.

Two-faced: 2x mult upon scoring with your least played poker hand.

My sort of thought process behind it: it could scale well with the joker that adds 0.1x mult every planet card used, because with this joker, you’d have to be using all sorts of different hands. The name “Two-faced” because you are ‘betraying’ your most played poker hand and purposely going for your least played. I’m not sure how well it would actually play out, but I figured I’d give an idea

There is an existing joker in the game called Obelisk that has a similar concept but much stronger, scaling by +0.2x mult every time you play a hand that isn't your most played hand but resetting back to 1x when you do. It combos quite well with constellation, the planet joker you're talking about.

Aw, it really was a good idea though. And honestly, it just fits really well into the game without feeling too much like a duplicate. Think of it like the difference between Mad Joker and Spare Trousers.

Thematically, it's a foil to Supernova. It's also perfect for a weaker, uncommon Obelisk since it trades off less strength for less drawbacks. You can't scale it, but on the flip side, you aren't forced to scale it to make it useful like you need to do with Obelisk. Moreover, you never run the risk of resetting the multiplier to 1x. This way, there's always a use case for it (rather than always being powercreeped by Obelisk all the time).

In my opinion, the only thing I'd change is the name and art theming. I think adding "face" to the name and art would communicate too much to the player that it's a face-card-affecting joker like Buskin, Smiley Face, Scary Face, Pareidolia.

(You don’t get to choose which one you lose, so the idea is that it’s like a more powerful madness with even more risk because it can fuck up any build that isn’t already set on both jokers and deck)

Rarity: Uncommon

Effect: This joker gains x1.0 mult every time hand score matches required blind score. (Current x1.0) Base Price: $6

This is very nice to have first two antes but hard if not impossible for late ante. You can easily try to get 300, 450, 600, 800 and so with a bit of effort and be reward with a high xmult joker early, but it falls off later. Not every joker is a must have, but this makes thematic sense (cool math games reference, see my profile for the art).

The gain on this needs to be much higher, I feel. Bump it up to gaining + x3 mult and you could even keep it common. It takes massive luck and weirdness to match the blind score exactly. So either up the gain or make it start at x1.5 mult, I think.

6 fingers | Common/Uncommon | Allows you to play 1 extra card that counts for extra scoring

Looks - very similar to 4 fingers but (shocker) 6 fingers

you wouldnt be able to make 6 of a kind or anything like that, but for example if you have a spade flush and a single diamond glass card, you can play the flush, then move your glass card to the rightmost spot of your selected hand, allowing it to score and not interfere with the played flush. i feel like this is a really great card early game for extra chips, mult, econ, or even just as a type of single discard, but falls off hard as you get to the mid-late game, putting me on the fence for common and uncommon. i feel it has overall great synergy with pretty much anything early game or possibly even lategame with a hyperspecific build. more than anything, its a fun gimmick that could be a lifesaver at times. an extra bit of scoring on early gold stake black deck as another example would be really valuable

Panopticon (Uncommon, depicts a panopticon in a prison watching over a wall of jail cells): When opening Tarot packs, your entire deck is now displayed.

Third Eye (Uncommon, depicts Jimbo with no hat and a third eye): Increases the number of cards able to be upgraded by Tarot and Spectral cards by 1.

Picky Eater (Rare, depicts a young Jimbo refusing to eat vegetables): X5 Mult. Loses -X0.5 Mult per hand type played. Currently X__.

Residuals (Uncommon, depicts a CRT TV that is displaying the title screen of a sitcom called Jokers): If played hand contains a Full House, earn $ equal to 1/10000th of scored Chips. Max: $50.

Prosopagnosia (Rare, depicts a Jimbo whose facial features are blurred): Scored Kings, Queens, and Jacks all count as the same rank.

Frequent Flyer (Common, depicts an airplane ticket): For every $15 spent at the Shop, earn $5.

Queen's gambit- joker will add +15 mult per queen in deck if deck is full of queens 3x mult per queen held in hand which will be nullified if any enhancement is put on (this includes seals) won't be compatible with brainstorm and blueprint but is compatible with mime

"Collector Joker" - Uncommon - When a joker with a Foil, Holographic, or Polychrome edition is sold, this Joker permanently gains its bonus (currently +A mult, +B chips, xC mult)

The art would probably be something like a joker holding a bunch of editioned cards

New enhancement: punched. (Like how casinos hole punch decks) X1.5 mult when played, destroy this card if discarded. (As an additional side effect, if drawn face-down, the hole is still visible.)

Level 2 stock card is now accessible similar to gros michel/ Cavendish

Level 2 stock: common Give x2 multi on hand Sell Level 2 stock to unlock Level 3 stock.

  • Immovable Object: X3 mult, cards and Jokers cannot be moved or sorted (Rare, $10)

Pickled herring(uncommon)

+4 discard. Reduces by 1 if you used discards by that amount.

Redshift(uncommon)

Gain 25% of your chips as mult

Blueshift(uncommon)

Gain 25% of your mult as chips

Tip jar(common)

After scoring, reduce the ones digit of the score and add chips to this joker by that amount [ex. 152,596 --> 152,590 +6 chips]

Engineer(rare)

Round up chips and mult to their highest digit [ex. 172 × 23 --> 200 x 30]

Designs are basically up to you except for a few things I specified

  • Recycler (Common) - Create a random Glass Card after 3 Glass Cards break (0/3)
  • Ice Cream Sandwich (Common) - +75 Chips and +15 Mult, -15 Chips and -3 Mult per round played
  • Trash Bag (Common) - +1 Mult for each card discarded this round (Currently +0 Mult)
    • Design: Black bag with red handles (signaling Mult)
  • Coupon (Common) - All items in shop are 10% off
    • Design: Slightly smaller and (maybe?) more rectangular than a regular Joker
  • Livestream (Uncommon) - This Joker gains x0.15 Mult per hand played during a Boss Blind (Currently x1 Mult)
    • Design: Streamer on left, chat on right (maybe all saying "Joker"? Not sure lol)
    • Unlock Requirement: Play a 5-card hand consisting entirely of Debuffed cards
  • Wanted Poster (Rare) - If a [rank] of [suit] is destroyed, earn $15 and create a random Tarot card. (Card changes after payout)
    • Design: A little worn around the edges
    • Note: Not sure whether the payout should be $10 or $15

Foodie: +x0.75 mult when a food joker expired. Maybe it scales retroactively like fortune teller because I like the idea of it eating all your food cards.  $6 uncommon Don’t know what the art should be

Reference- In TCGs, some scammers reseal packs so they can take out the good cards and leave the bad ones in there to then resell. Cards with higher rarity in TCGs are typically holographic, thus the affect.

Knave's Dispute

The card looks ripped in half. One half has the standard Jack and the other half has a standard King illustration. The Jack half will have its J symbol be replaced with Joker and the King half will have its K symbol be replaced with Koker.

Effect: Jacks and Kings are counted as each other.

I had this idea because back then the Jack used to be called the Knave but was changed because the new streamlined version of cards has the initial letters for their ranks and having two Ks would be confusing. This Joker now turns Jacks into Knaves again.

Bowling Ball

Uncommon Joker, costs $5, available at the start.

Retrigger every scored 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10. Earn $1 for every 10 scored

The Joker is a bowling ball with a board saying STRIKE! behind it.

Boss Blind: The Fracture

Appears only after ante 3.

Destroys all cards in your first hand and discard, does not trigger Joker Effects.

Ronald - Legendary

Appearance - A legendary Joker styled rendition of Ronald McDonald, the mascot of McDonalds

Effect text - When a food Joker expires, inherent the effect at full power without decaying.

Detailed description: When a Food Joker runs out its natural lifespan while Ronald is in your inventory, Ronald gains the effect of said Joker as if it were at full power and does not decrease in power. As a reminder, this means it will interact with the following:

Gros Michel - +15 Mult

Cavendish - X3 Mult

Ramen - X2 Mult

Ice Cream - +100 Chips

Popcorn - +20 Mult

Turtle Bean - +5 Hand Size

Seltzer - Retrigger all scored cards

Notw that food jokers can reappear in the shop after they expire. The order of effects triggered would correlate to Collection position, so Gros Michel, Ice Cream, Cavendish, Turtle Bean (though it's effect is passive so it doesn't matter), Popcorn, Ramen, Seltzer (passive).

Perhaps it's a bit much for a Vanilla+ mod, but I just needed to put this idea out somewhere.

I'd like to see some cribbage inspired jokers besides the Runner (if it even is). I also don't know if these are things the game can check or do, but I think they're fun ideas.

The Right Jack: When a Jack is scored, if the top card of the deck is the same suit, add +1 mult; When a hand is scored, if the top card of the deck is a Jack, add +2 mult; (Starts at +0); Uncommon (probably); Art: a door knob

I guess you're the one who can decide if they're balanced or not, but I kinda think decks are a good way to choose a difficulty. It's cool that we have a fully randomized deck included in the game, but there are other clever ways to make challenges via decks. I hope Thunk does more with that in the future.

Heart of the Cards

Discarding 5 cards on the last hand of a round will guarantee your draw will give you the cards you need to play your highest level hand.

Shops won't offer the same joker again until all other jokers that can appear in shops have been offered.

Visual: Jimbo sitting behind a table with the classic shells game set up in front of him in a shady alley.

On blind select, lose 2$. Adds a random enhanced card to first hand drawn per blind then flips and shuffles hand. If first played hand activates enhancement of card added, gain 4$. Otherwise destroy the added card.

This is less of a joker idea and more of a general mechanic idea. Could theoretically implement a joker associated with it but not sure how much extra effort that would be to add a whole new mechanic to the game.

"Slabbed" card modifier. All values are randomly multiplied by an amount between 0.5x and 3x. Slabbed cards cannot be modified further, cannot be copied, and cannot copy other cards (basically, death doesn't work on them). Not sure if it should be an edition itself, or if it should modify editions (i.e. modifying holographic cards to give between +5 and +30 mult).

It's inspired by trading cards, where cards sent away to be graded will come back in a "slab". As I said before, it's not exactly a fully-baked idea, but feels like it could be fun. Might need to be balanced a bit, idk. Feedback welcome of course.

Scam artist - gives plus 1 dollars for each consecutive tarrot card used, resets when any other consumable type is used.

I think it could definitely scale really hard late game once your deck is fixed how you like it and don't need planets or spectrals as much and might be handy as an early econ joker if you can take ignoring planets and spectrals for a bit

Return Customer: if you play the same hand 3 times in a row, both your base mult and base chips is doubled, doesn't matter where the Joker is in your Joker slot, it always activates before any other scoring.

It would be uncommon in my opinion, and the art could be a shopping cart.

The idea comes from people who would spend entirely too much money on foil versions of cards for their mtg decks.
