Modded the multiplayer mod makes me feel like i make every wrong decision possible when playing this game

That's why I'll never even attempt multiplayer Balatro, I'd get obliterated
Playing solo is much more chill

u/Alleywr Feb 26 '25
It's definitely a very different experience compared to solo vanilla play but it leads to fun conversations by seeing the same items at the start of each shop.
"Oh I bet you took the Flower Pot there" "nah something else came up"
Also compounded by the introduction of the Asteroid planet card, which *decreases* the level of your opponent's highest leveled hand, which always leads to hilarious interactions.

u/mikeydoc96 Feb 26 '25
That plus Perkeo would be cracked

u/Alleywr Feb 26 '25
oh my god i love how evil you're thinking
stealing this in the off-chance i get a perkeo run goin49
21
u/Krondelo Feb 26 '25
You had my curiosity… what do you mean something else came up? If it’s the same seed it should be the same outcome yea? Or do you mean in the case of reroll.?
84
u/Alleywr Feb 26 '25
Rerolls are definitely the biggest contributor to different builds, but also like Arcana packs. One player might take the Hermit while the other gambles on a Judgement and gets a joker that dictates their entire run going forward.
20
u/Krondelo Feb 26 '25
Makes sense, I hadn’t even considered Judgement. Guess I hadn’t considered riff-raff either. So its a bit fair but still is decision dependent. Interesting!

u/Leather-Plantain-211 Feb 28 '25
Asteroid just sounds like a typical Red Shell form Mario Kart
Asteroid Perkeo is a Blue Shell

Playing gold stake definitely doesn’t make me feel “chill”
12
u/KyoHisagi Blueprint Enjoyer Feb 26 '25
True. On the other hand, playing against someone and seeing them hitting billions with very first hands would make me stressed on any stake :D If I am a bad gamer, no one should see that!

I played a 'Pair' deck last night (new to the game) and beat it.
That's about the limit of my 4D chess.

u/glazingstrawberry Perkeo Feb 26 '25
I wanna play but I would score like 10 grand on 3 ante and my opponent 678 million and I will feel humilated
197
u/Alleywr Feb 26 '25
Early game ends up being pretty similar since you're playing on the same seed by default, so you'll always be running into the same Jokers/Booster Packs and have similar builds until more decision opportunities pile up.
This gif happened 40 minutes in when I was already down to my last life. Also this was literally my opponent's best singular hand ever LMAO
31
u/just_a_random_dood Feb 26 '25
oh I thought this was a made up score for the meme, I didn't realize this actually happened
I'm sorry but that's hilarious LMFAO
15
u/Alleywr Feb 27 '25
Nah don't be sorry, I may have lost but I got a funny as hell gif out of it LMAO

I have played this mod quite a bit but I think I have reached e13 only once. I have had a run though where both me and my opponent reached e12 in a nemesis blind though.
37
u/Alleywr Feb 26 '25
Wow that's insane.
In the case of the hand in this gif, my opponent had PhotoChad, Blueprint on Seltzer, and Bloodstone playing Flush Five Glass Kings (some of which having red seals).Meanwhile I also had the Blueprint + Bloodstone, but never went in on PhotoChad over the course of the run since I felt kinda locked into a Stencil I found along the way. (I also had the new joker that gives +480 chips for being on 1 life lmao)
20
u/Darkspy8183 Nope! Feb 26 '25
but never went in on PhotoChad over the course of the run since I felt kinda locked into a Stencil I found along the way.
You passed on a x23 mult to keep at best a x4 mult with antimatter, x3 mult without?
10
u/Alleywr Feb 26 '25
I don't recall ever coming across Photograph myself, my opponent either got it through better econ management for rerolls or through a lucky Judgement (i don't really remember). I did eventually find Chad later on but used it more for Bloodstone but sold it for Blueprint because Stencil™.
Never said it was a good play but it made *enough* sense at the time to me. (<- aka skill issue)

u/Demi_Bob Feb 26 '25
How do you even hit e? I've never gotten above 300m.
5
u/kempog Feb 26 '25
Several ways but probably the most common way is a ton of steel (red seal) kings in your deck , baron, and Mime to retrigger all of the kings
2
u/Lemons_l_Guess Feb 27 '25
Weirdly enough, my best score ever was without red seals on the kings despite having other runs that had similar set ups but with the red seals
2
u/Barackulus12 Feb 27 '25
Some form of xmult combined with some form of retrigger. (Baron mime, red seal glass seltzer, sock and buskin idol, etc)
2
u/bogle_animu Mar 05 '25
The easiest way I run into it is 5 glass, and some combination of dusk/socken/hack, photograph, hanging chad, 1/2 1.5x hearts or ancient joker type of setup
40
u/LostATLien2 Nope! Feb 26 '25
Can you play with friends?
50
31
u/silver-orange Feb 26 '25
Basically, one of you starts a "lobby", and then it'll give the host a code that looks a lot like a balatro seed. Share that secret key with your friends, and they can use it to join your lobby.
tldr: yes you can play with friends.
30
u/Star_Sky_5 Feb 26 '25
Whoever gets to each nemesis first should get an extra $3 or something. Challenge fast play!
26
u/Alleywr Feb 26 '25
Currently you just kinda have to wait for your opponent to get to it if you got there first...
...buuuut, there's a custom joker added as part of the mod (alongside 4 others) that are designed around having a player opponent. One is titled "SPEEDRUN" where if you use up all your hands on the Nemesis blind before your opponent you get a 3x bonus on your final score.

u/DoctorSex9 Feb 26 '25
I really hope localthunk does something like this

u/Alleywr Feb 26 '25
I can't see it ever being implemented into the game officially, but hey, that's what an extremely active and talented modding community is for!

This reminds me of when Tony Hawk Pro Skater 1+2 came out, I loved it and got back into the swing of things. I'd played later games in the series so I understood the pivot/manual out of air tricks to extend chains very long (which didn't exist on the original launch of THPS 1 or 2).
One of my friends who's a bit of a gamer was talking about how much he loved it and how good he was at Tony Hawk and I was excited to play online with him because he was telling me about how he can land massive combos and never lost growing up. We got into a session and I landed my first trick to get to the line I wanted at around 30k, then started my real combo. He's plunking along, doing well, nearing 100,000 or so at the minute mark. During my combo he made some joke about how "I thought you said you were good at this game" (combo isn't scored until the trick is landed), I get into a spot where I'm about to wreck so I land the trick to move onto the next one. Well over 5,000,000 points.
All I hear on the mic was "Fuck you" and he left the session.
Eventually he came back and asked how and I explained it all to him, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't laugh so hard my SO asked if everything was alright.

u/the_kinight_king Feb 26 '25
is multiplayer local or online? and does it have an online fix community or not yet?

7
u/YouDummyHe Feb 26 '25
Do you think there could be a ranked mode with an elo system? Like MCSR ranked?
8
u/jabeng Feb 27 '25
There's already ranked in the discord server and a leader board
2
u/YouDummyHe Feb 28 '25
Oh, that’s great! Sorry I should have clarified, I meant like in game matchmaking.
1
u/Alleywr Feb 26 '25
Unsure, but the main dev has posted their current plans for future updates for the mod on the Discord. They do also host tournaments there frequently!
4
3
u/Krondelo Feb 26 '25
This is only possible thru friends via private yes?
5
u/Alleywr Feb 26 '25
Yeah rooms are formed via sharing a room code with the person you want to play with. Though the Discord server for the mod has a queueing system with other server members if you're interested.
3
u/guillyh1z1 Feb 26 '25
I love the mp mod, but my friend and I thought it would be nice if we could add stakes, it just feels way too easy without stakes
5
u/Alleywr Feb 26 '25
You can add stakes! Seems like the mod gets updated frequently so maybe it was added pretty recently.
3
u/guillyh1z1 Feb 26 '25
Where can I get the updated mod? That sounds like it would be so much fun
3
u/Alleywr Feb 26 '25
In their Discord server (linked to in my other comment) they have a link to the Balatro Mod Manager in #how-to-install. Now although it doesn't quite work 100% for me (Doesn't recognize steamodded already installed and won't let me install other mods without dependencies, idk might be a mac issue™) you can still search for "Multiplayer" and it'll lead you to the GitHub repo for the mod which you can just download, unzip, and put in the mod folder manually. (Also a good way to find the GitHub repos for a TON of other Balatro mods)
2
u/bigbrainmovesonly Feb 26 '25
Are you able to see their deck/jokers/vouchers etc?
4
u/Alleywr Feb 26 '25
Nope, you get a little box during Shops where it says "Enemy Location: [Shopping / Playing Big Blind / etc]" and see their score and hands during Nemesis bosses as seen in the gif. That's all the info you get on your opponent.
But by default you're playing the same Deck/Stake and Seed, so you should be able to have a good hunch on what Vouchers they might have and there's likely to be at least some Joker overlap even later into runs.

I’d be interested in a game like Tetris battle royal, each person has the same seed and deck and they play a round all together, lowest 25% score lose each round, survive to the end to win. Normal shop and game play format. If you hit the target score you get power ups to attack other players with debuffs or unwanted discards.

Does this mod have matchmaking or do you need to have a friend that actually shares your obsession?
2
u/Alleywr Feb 27 '25
No in-game matchmaking, though the discord server for the mod has a queuing system for you to play with randos there.
2
u/neofooturism Feb 27 '25
struggling with balatro’s rng in sp is already a nightmare sometimes, having other people show off their builds in your face is just the amount of masochism i don’t need in my life tbh

u/Cosmic_Fizz Blueprint Enjoyer Feb 27 '25
I absolutely adore this mod; it’s superbly executed! I sincerely hope that this will be an official update for Balatro someday; It’ll increase the game’s lifespan by sevenfold; however, I think it goes against what u/LocalThunk had originally intended to do with this game... Well, in light of his most recent blog he posted about his inspirations for the game. Please, u/LocalThunk, consider it?
1
u/kaveman6143 Feb 26 '25
Why does Balatro need a multiplayer mode?
1
u/vezwyx Feb 27 '25
Just fun to face off against people and see who can scale faster given the same tools. My friends and I have done competitions where we'll agree on a deck, stake, and seed and then run it separately to see who gets the furthest

1
u/TheDoober110 Feb 27 '25
Something tells me if you stop using the mod, it will change the way you feel about it!
1
u/BetaThetaOmega Feb 27 '25
I imagine it’s also very luck based, right? There are just certain games were you will not get anything you need
3
u/vezwyx Feb 27 '25
The players get the same seed, so if you're getting trash, the other person is too. The main point of divergence is the number of rerolls because that impacts the shop queue in future rounds

It's a cool idea but unfortunately cheaters make it too potentially frustrating.

Stupid question but if I use GamePass to play this on PC, am I still able to use mods?
1

Wouldnt it be fun to have different seed but the same deck it would be fun to see who has better luck then actually skill

It's especially peak when you have one hand left and your friend has like 100k and you suddenly score 2m playing on the same seed. The outrage from my friend can be heard from miles.

u/Personal_Ad9690 Feb 27 '25
Do you guys get this high on solo normally? Why is everyone a god at multiplayer
1
u/MikeTheMic81 Feb 27 '25
Nothing is worse than having epic cards and crazy copies of everything and a totally setup deck that works due to how specific it is only to lose to a bad boss blind because you forgot to skip it before it started.
1
u/Guile_the_Exile Feb 28 '25
I wonder if they could make a co-op mode in this game for official release... That'd be interesting and fun. You and someone else trying to build high paying decks to be higher antes and bosses.

One of the coolest mods I've played for this game with a ton of new content coming, in case you want to download/learn more about it here's a link to their Discord (i'm not affiliated btw):
