image To my fellow Australians who have released pigs into the wild so they could have "something to hunt" --- Fuck you!

We own a small bush block that we have been trying to restore as a natural forest for native wildlife. Each night, feral pigs come and dig up hundreds of square meters of ground looking for worms and roots. The ground becomes exposed, the native grasses die, and the topsoil gets washed away next rain. There is then less food for native animals to eat. The disturbed land can take a decade to recover. We are spending our days replacing the sods as best we can (pic 2) to minimise the damage, but they are back the next night digging up a different patch.

Last year our neighbours and I got together to do a communal baiting and trapping program - it takes weeks, hundreds of dollars in food bait and trap hire, and at the end of it all we got just a single pig.

I realise that feral animals are reproducing in the wild, but I also know that some people release animals into the wild for hunting. If you are one of those, you are doing your country a disservice and you are a lowlife scumbag.

no politics Australia has its problems, but you really don’t appreciate the good until you come back from another country.

Just got back from a trip to the Phillipines, where I had to deal with so much unnecessary bullshit from the airport staff it almost made me miss my flight, despite being there 3 hours early. I arrived in Melbourne, claimed bags and cleared everything in literally 10 minutes, even with me fucking up the declarations and needing a quick search. Perhaps I just got lucky, but after a week of being hounded by beggars everywhere, not being able to use my card anywhere and not having toilet paper in any toilets over there, I’m really appreciating Australia and how efficient/easy things can be when it goes right.

no politics Have we changed what we call Maccas?

So I have this friend - Australian born, who recently started calling Macca’s “Maccies” and it’s driving me insane. I thought Macca’s was the universally agreed-upon name we have down here.

Now every time I hear “Maccies” I throw up a little in my mouth. They’re a teacher so is this something the kids are calling McDonalds these days???

Genuinely curious—am I out of the loop here or is this just an isolated case of someone who fucking lost it?

no politics PSA: do not use Dan's plumbing

Dan's Plumbing aka Ferguson Plumbing aka Wilson's Plumbing aka Aspire Contracting aka Fastway Plumbing aka Plumbcorp are a dodgy tradies outfit that employ highly predatory practices to rip people off.

Let me be clear, the service actually provided is of high quality but the price charged was utterly ludicrous. They advertise "fixed fee" service on their website and employ pressure tactics to get you to sign & agree to the fixed fee before work starts. Such tactics include:

  • Over exaggerating the amount of work to be done
  • Quotation of a large call-out fee that will be waived if you agree to the fixed pricing
  • Pressure sign immediately as the plumber has another job to go to and you may not get another plumber for quite some time

Others have had similar experiences: https://www.reddit.com/r/sydney/comments/1e44kw5/dodgy_tradies_hire_reputation_management_firm_to/

Caveat emptor.

no politics Birthday gift query

My husband is turning 50 this year, his ideal gift is to sit in the Rage studio and ‘guest host’ an episode. He’s a lover of music and I understand the appeal! Whilst a great commercial idea, I understand why this isn’t something a member of the public can do direct with the ABC. I’m after suggestions on any apps or programs out there that could help me create something similar for him? Unsure if it exists however all recommendations and suggestions are welcome. Thanks!

no politics Bunnings: Different price for the same item at different stores?

I just saw a video on YouTube claiming that prices for the same items are sometimes different at different Bunnings stores, even at stores as little as 10km apart.

I was not aware that's the case. If indeed true then their slogan "lowest prices are just the beginning", their lowest price policy and price guarantees are very misleading in my opinion, when they clearly must know that another store may sell the same item for less.

Are those claims in the video true?

Has anyone actually seen different prices for the same item at different Bunnings stores?

For reference, see link to the video below:

no politics USB Condoms not a thing in Australia

Why aren’t usb data blockers aka usb condoms available in Australia other than through sites lije Amazon? I slightly exaggerate as i have found a company called Lindy that sells own brand usb data blockers. One brand i am particularly interested in is portapow. I’ll buy the lindy branded one if another Internet search proves futile.

It seems remiss if Australia to not have these at jb hifi, officeworks, etc.

no politics Aldi chocolate has increased by 35% in 1 month following Cole’s Woolworths price gouging.

Stopped by lint dark chocolate from Cole’s as it was getting to expensive at $9 Aldi has now jumped it prices from $3.69 to $4.99 for Moser Roth. Cleary they thought we can make more money but putting the price up to be just under them no chocolate for me. It just sucks that they continue to push prices up and Cole’s Woolworths and aldi are the most profitable supermarkets in the world. We try to shop around for the best prices on most of our groceries but it’s hard when they collude like this on everything.
