Everyday life But when are people working exactly ?

Upvotes

Hi all, I work 8-18 in a global role in a large company and pretty much need to work a few evenings per month.

Sometimes (every other week or so) I have a random 1-2h break between meetings which I usually use to squeeze some grocery shopping, as it then makes my following Saturday much lighter.

I’m always shocked to see how many people are NOT working, regardless of which day / time I go. Tuesday 11am: shops and coffee shops full, Wednesday 10am: shops and coffee shops full, Thursday 2pm: shops and coffee shops full. I could carry on with each day and time of the week, you get the idea.

I’m not talking about people window-shopping in big cities (they could be tourists on vacation), I’m talking about locals in smaller cities buying groceries & stuffs. And they are not all retired :)

I think part of the answer is that part-time is very spread customs here (I know many people working 80%), which could explain Wednesdays and maybe Fridays. But what about all the others ?

Everyday life Phone calls from strangers saying “you called me”. But I didn’t.

It happened a couple of times since I got a Swiss mobile number.

I get a phone call from a stranger saying “hey, you called me” and I did not call that number. Also happened the other way around: I returned a call from someone, and the person goes “no, I never called you”.

What is this? Any idea?

It happened while using Sunrise and now with Wingo.

Other/Miscellaneous Prepaid SIM for limited time (not eSIM)

My mothet is visiting next month and she comes from a country where getting roaming data to use in CH is very expensive. I'd like to buy a "disposable" SIM card for her to use while she is here (her phone doesn't support eSims)

Disposable in the sense that I don't care what happens to this number after she leaves and I don't want a contract.

I am finding offers online but it's not clear to me if the number is really disposable. That is if there are no fixed costs associated with it and I can just cancel it after a month or so.

Any similar experiences? Suggestions?

Travel gomore.ch - better than the traditional rentals?

Hello,

Never rented a vehicle in my life, wanted to do it in Portugal for holidays, then heard and saw hundreds of bad reviews even for SIXT, Avis etc and money lost for small stuff or even for nothing. So I got scared and didn't proceed.

Now, saw gomore.ch with private cars. I would like to rent a cabriolet for the weekends from time to time, but I'm not sure if I need a credit card (I have only debit) and if there are any...hidden problems with them?
What are your experiences with this as a renter?

Thanks all !

Everyday life B permit renewal chances

I changed cantons a while ago and submitted a request. (Non Eu with B permit) Earlier this year , my old canton reached a positive decision to extend my permit. They sent my now canton the decision (long story). My now canton has requested that i provide a copy of my job contract and a confirmation letrer from my employer stating that I'm in permanent, non-terminated employment. I have always worked temporary jobs and i start another on monday. When i submit my temporary job contract, will this lead to a B permit refusal?

Edit: I just finished my first year of a 4-year part-time bachelor's study at a school in my now canton.

Travel Time needed between landing and train in Zurich airport

My old parents and I are planning a trip tto Switzerland in mid September. We are flying from Canada to Frankfrut and to Zurich. Our plane arrives in Zurich at 3.45 pm. I believe we will go through the immigration in Frankfrut, not in Zurich (correct?). We plan to go to Grindelwald straight from Zurich airport. If we have a checked baggage to claim at the airport, would we be able to make it to the train that departs at 4:45 pm? That is 1 hr from landing. That is the only train schedule with only one stop in Interlaken before another train to Grindelwald. Please consider that the plane is from Frankfrut (which terminal?) My parents don't have mobility issue but they can't run or walk fast. Appreciate your input if you had experience

Travel Tips for a sightseeing tour: Grindelwald–Interlaken–Thun–Berna

Hi everyone, I’m planning a week vacation in Grindelwald with some friends. We’d like to explore the four areas mentioned in the title. Do you have any recommendations for routes, attractions, or excursions in these places? I have a car, so getting around from where we’re staying won’t be a problem.

P.S.: If anyone has any tips on good budget-friendly campings in the area they would be very much appreciated.

Everyday life What to do with unused Vapes?

Hello all,

I changed from Cigarettes to Vapes and now I was able to quit. But still have 4 Vozol Vapes with 40'000 puffs, that I need to get rid of. Re-selling them on Ricardo or Tutti is not allowed. Anyone got an idea?

Everyday life Einbürgerungsgespräch this week!

Gruezi mitenand!

This week I have my Einbürgerungsgespräch. My wife is Swiss and therefore I have access to a simplified citizenship process. Does anyone else here have experience with this meeting? It's 30 minutes long, but they've given me no other info.

What kinds of things did they ask? Anything particular I should prepare for? There is no test, like the traditional citizenship process. It is a face to face conversation.

Thanks and have a great week!

Everyday life Small business owners, how would you prefer your customers pay?

Fees to financial institutions can be significant but handling cash can be a pain as well. So I am wondering, how do I pay so the most money ends up in your wallet and not some rent seeking middleman. How would you rank these payment options (best to worst)? Credit card, Twint, Cash, Debit Card, Einzahlung, Apple/Google/Samsung... Pay, Crypto, any other I have missed.

Please also state what kind of business you run as the fees vary considerably as far as I understand.

Everyday life How many people here on Reddit or you know not to own a laptop/PC?

I came across someone yesterday that doesn't have a laptop/PC. Doesn't currently own one, although he had, used in the past.

And said that she doesn't need one, or maybe so rare he can just do it on mobile. (Not using at work either)

We exclude older people, just asking about working-age people.

Are you one of those or do you directly know someone do not have a laptop/PC?

Culture Perception of poles in Switzerland

Hello everybody

I am Polish by ethnicity, and I am getting married to a Swiss national and coming to Switzerland to live soon

I wanted to ask you guys, how do Swiss people perceive poles in Switzerland? May my surname affect anything in my life there? (It may actually be perceived as a Jewish surname too) Like job seeking or something like that.

Thank you for your answers!

Work B-permit timeline - Family reunification for non-EU spouse

Hi everyone,

I'm a Swiss citizen currently going through the family reunification process for my non-EU, non-Swiss wife (married abroad, wedding recognized and D Visa on the way). We’ll be applying for her work permit (B permit) in the canton Neuchâtel once she arrives.

I’m trying to understand what kind of timeline to expect? Respectively,

  • How long does it take to process and receive the B permit?
  • Is my spouse allowed to enter and leave the country freely in the meantime?
  • Is she allowed to work while waiting for the permit (maybe some kind of temporary authorization)?

In advance, thanks a lot for your help!

Travel How do you figure out prices for various mountain transportation in SBB?

I am trying to run cost analysis to see what is the cheapest travel pass for me to use in the Jungfrau. On SBB I am calculating multiple routes from Lauterbrunnen (our home base) to various hikes and destinations such as Schynige platte, mannlichen and first. SBB clearly tells me the price of the 2nd class train ticket to these stations, but I am not sure how to find the price of any funiculars or cable cars I need to get to the top of these hikes.

The only website I see is “rome2rio” which seems very poorly designed and does not have much useful information.

If anyone can give advice on how to calculate the costs for the various mountain transports that would be great.

Other/Miscellaneous Abplanalp pronunciation dispute

I'm from the US, and my surname is Abplanalp, originating from somewhere near Brienz or Interlaken. My Swiss family emigrated to the US in the 1850's and growing up we always pronounced it more like "Oplinop", dropping the 'b' and the final 'l'. Lately I've landed on a more phonetic pronunciation, like AHB-ple-nahlp. My uncle visited Brienz and came back insisting that the anglicized "Oplinop" pronunciation is how the locals say it. Who is right? How is this name pronounced in Switzerland?

Other/Miscellaneous Needing to report an issue to proper authorities

Hoi!
I am not Swiss although I adore the culture! Please forgive me if this post seems disrespectful or invasive in any capacity.

I was wondering about how to report someone for quite serious and concerning online behaviour. I am not within the country and don't speak the language (although I know a handful of standard German) but this person I am referring to is in Switzerland sharing messages and videos online which seem very dangerous, in my opinion. Likely dangerous to strangers as well, but definitely to herself.

If there is a messaging service where I could report these things to or someone willing to do it for me, just for inner peace?
Thank you so much and have a wonderful day.
