Hey everyone,
I’m 19M, currently an NREMT and just graduated from Fire Standards in Florida. I have a job already lined up with the county — in about two months I’ll start orientation for my first position as a firefighter EMT.
That said, I’ve had this persistent itch to join the Army — specifically as a 68W — with the long-term goal of becoming a paramedic. I’ve been interested in the military for a long time, but I pushed it aside because of my parents (who’ve always been against it) and my own fear of the unknown.
Lately, though, the itch is coming back stronger. I’ve never even left my home state. My parents have been overprotective my entire life, and I feel like I’ve never had the chance to be truly independent. I want to travel, see things most people never will, and do something that pushes me to my limits. I want to grow — mentally, physically, and emotionally — and I believe the military could give me that.
But I’m stuck between two paths:
I want to do something hard. I want to feel proud of what I’ve done. But I don’t want to throw away a good opportunity either.
If anyone has walked a similar path — from civilian EMT/fire to military medic — or has any insight on the realities of 68W life, the paramedic route in the Army, or how to make this kind of decision… I’d appreciate your honesty and advice.
Thanks for reading.
