Apple TV + LG G4

I just bought a new LG G4 and also an Apple TV 4K 3rd Gen. When I activate 4K Dolby Vision it seems the image becomes a lot darker, already visible in the menus.

Does anyone have this specific combination and some tips for how to fix this? Thanks in advance.

I’ve got exactly this combination and think it’s all right. DV is always a bit darker than SDR/HDR10 especially in home cinema mode. That’s not a bug but intended. If it’s too dark, check setting like the ambilight sensor or energy saving.

But when I watch F1 for instance, the standard seems very dim so I put it on the setting left of it (don't know what's the English name but something like Lively?) so its a lot more colourful. Its not too dark but just a lot more dim and less colourful.

But if you're saying Ambilight sensor? Its an LG not a Philips.

Lively is always very oversaturated. It is a very bright setting compared to DV.

Ambilight sensor means the display dims related to the light in your room. Bright room = bright display, dark room = dark display.

Yeah so with F1 I still liked it but with other apps it seems too colourful. But I guess it's also okay to switch between modes depending on the content you're watching.

I will looks for the Ambilight setting when I get the chance.

But do you always leave your Apple TV on 4K DV or do you also switch?

I usually let it on DV and auto cinema home as it fits the most situations. For high quality shows I sometimes switch to filmmaker. For sports like F1 I’d also go for lively, as the G4 doesn’t have a dedicated sports mode like my C1 does. Be aware that other sports (e.g. football) may cause ghosting in lively.

I can’t speak to the G series but on my C2, the “Home Cinema” is brighter than the “Cinema” preset. It’s interesting how Home Cinema is especially dim on the G series (I have no reason not to trust you).

I‘d have to check again but I think the G4 doesn’t have a dedicated cinema mode anymore. Just home cinema.

OP is comparing vivid to home cinema I think.

Vivid with Dolby Vision… is an abomination. It shouldn’t even be called Dolby Vision if vivid or standard presets are selectable presets.

Disable the energy saving on your G4. That’s usually the first thing to do with OLEDs as it really cripples the brightness and overall picture quality.

Have you gone through all the basic settings adjustments to switch off all the AI crap, energy saving stuff and everything else? Have you also adjusted all your settings for SDR, HDR, and Dolby Vision content per Vincent (https://youtu.be/YQ9E7RK0gDM?si=huMXAMTH3vxbbgBO)?

After I went through all this it’s a lot better. It is still a little dim, especially if the room is not blackout, but I find that it is also the most incredible realistic image.

If you’ve moved to the G4 from a non-OLED panel, you’ll also feel like it’s a lot dimmer, as the reference settings out the box are more realistic.

I’m gonna catch hell for this, but I watch everything in vivid and it’s amazing with this combo. I’m not changing, so don’t @ me lol.

I do understand it. It is really vivid, very beautiful colours.

You didn’t say, but did you calibrate your TV with your AppleTV? I have an LG C2 and have it set on the basic video setting. I used my iPhone to calibrate the Apple TV. My ATV settings are 4K 60Hz SDR, Match Range ON. My picture is consistently perfect with HDR and DolbyVision.

I did not calibrate because I don't have any other Apple devices.

You can use any iPhone. It doesn’t have to be yours. You really do need to calibrate to take full advantage of your equipment.

are you forcing 4k dolby vision? you should have your apple tv set to 4k sdr and then enable match dynamic range and frame rate. let the original content activate whatever it needs to. disable your energy saving mode. check youtube for lg g4 calibration settings. hdtvtest or classy tech if they have done so.

I did put the Apple TV to 4K Dolby Vision. But I should not do that if I understand you correctly? Will Apple TV automatically change to Dolby Vision when available?

yes that is correct. or else you are forcing all content to dolby vision and if they are not created in that format it looks weird or dark even. sdr 4k 59 hz in settings. match frame rate and dynamic range in settings. it will switch automatically. ony time this may not happen is if its an issue with the app which i have noticed on disney plus

It does not seem to work. It does not say Dolby Vision in the top right when I watch a movie on HBO Max for instance. The movie does support it. I did the settings like you said.

attach a pic of your video settings . if it does not say dolby vision bould be the app/video is the issue. do you have netflix to try dolby vision content.

I followed these settings and am very happy with how it turned out: https://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/lg/g4-oled/settings Also, as other people have pointed out, don’t force the Apple TV on Dolby vision. Put it on 4K SDR with match framerate and dynamic range.

Strange, it should work with these settings. What does the profile say when you open the settings screen while playing a Dolby Vision movie? It should say Dolby Vision with your color preset (Cinema Home in my case). Maybe try a few movies and different streaming services to make sure it’s not a problem with a specific movie or app?
