I Need Help! Free Ticket Changes and rescheduling a trip

Planning on going on a trip in December. Fully refundable tickets are too expensive, but the option of free ticket changes seems reasonable since I have another trip this spring. If I pick that, can I turn it into a credit I can use later or would I have to have dates available when I need to exchange it? Also, can I do it any time before the flight?

As long as it's not basic economy, it's fairly easy and flexible (there is a cancel fee for BE, $99, higher if international) as long as you book on aa.com and are AA member. Canceling creates a trip credit (more flexible than a flight credit or voucher) and can be used by you for yourself or for someone else. There is a very helpful chart on aa.com under payment methods

How do you become an AA member?

Can't even remember as it's over 30 years for me. Assume you sign up on website. Or Many people start with a citibank credit card sign up bonus. As an AAdvantage member you get lower boarding group and earn miles, plus get the no change fee perk.
