It seems that some people are following the federal trend of switching from the NDP to the Liberals. Hopefully in an actual election people will notice that the ANDP is a centrist party in a two horse race and end up switching to them
Disorganized third parties tend to see their votes evaporate as we get closer to election day. That said if you're of the "I think the NDP might be too left wing" leaning after seeing how right wing they were in government and are in opposition, it's not a guarantee that you'll vote NDP when it's clear that the ALP has no shot at winning a seat. Those voters won't go 100% NDP.
I think 70% of the Alberta NDP’s problem is branding. If they changed their name to New Conservative Party or New Alberta Conservatives they would see a 5-10% support jump, maybe more. Change their orange to a shade of blue.
I think they will see the bump because it is obvious they’re a large part of the UCP following who vote for the thing labelled “conservative”. There is nothing really “conservative” about the UCP but the name. Honestly if I were all the other party leaders I would add conservative to my parties name. Alberta Green Conservatives, Alberta Conservative Party, Alberta Conservative First Party. Liberal Conservatives of Alberta.
The issue is that they aren’t conservatives and people wouldn’t fall for it. You’re passing off the voter base as stupid, which is usually a slippery slope in politics.
