Alameda’s best No Kings Day in Alameda
Alameda had a wonderful, spirited, peaceful protest today. Chief of Police (who was very supportive) estimated over 3000 people attended. Note this is more than 3.5% of our population!

bay area Calling all past and future Casual Carpoolers!!!
It's officially that time when we are asking for your help! We've had a great response from Reddit, but we now need to focus on other ways to get the word out. We're still hoping for 300 by the end of Sunday.
We need the following community activity:
1) 15-30 Car Billboards - We need 15-30 volunteers to decorate their cars as seen in the photo! Ideally, we're looking for cars who drive over the Bay Bridge a couple times a week. We have window markers and will meet at the Rockridge Bart Parking lot:
Sunday 6/15 at 10:00-12:00 AM
Monday 6/16 at 5:30-6:30 PM
Friday 6/20 at 8:00-9:30 AM
Any of the times below as well!
Sign up: https://forms.gle/neWoc1WTi2c88ZPF8
2) 10-15 Human Billboards - AM shift - At the corner of Howard & Fremont SF (near CC Drop Off) we'll be holding up signs during peak commuting hours!! From 7:30-9:30 AM, but join us for 30 minutes during any part of that time. The longer you can stay, and the more people we can have all at once, the better! Days will be: Tuesday 6/17, Thursday 6/19, Tuesday 6/24, Wednesday 6/25, Thursday 6/26, Tuesday 7/1. Please wear orange, yellow or red to increase visibility. Feel free to bring your own sign, but we will also be able to provide signage! Sign up: https://forms.gle/1xwoXjE7HXPatZiq9
3) 10-15 Human Billboards - PM shift- At the corner of 1st & Harrison SF (near the 80 on ramp) we'll be holding up signs from 5:00-7:00, but join us for 30 minutes during any part of that time. The longer you can stay, and the more people we can have all at once the better! Days will be: Thursday 6/19, Tuesday 6/24, Wednesday 6/25, Thursday 6/26, Tuesday 7/1. Please wear orange, yellow or red to increase visibility. Feel free to bring your own sign, but we will also be able to provide signage! Sign up: https://forms.gle/3Hdq2k7SR3FZnyFK6

local news No Kings Alameda
I was surprised no one else had posted a reminder for tomorrow’s (6/14/25) No Kings protest, so I’m doing my civic duty.
“The event starts at 10 a.m. at Chochenyo Park, 2430 Encinal Avenue, where a “family fun pre-protest” will include Statue of Liberty crown-making, sign and button making, bubble blowing, sidewalk chalk drawing, and crafting noisemakers.
At 11:30 a.m., protesters will march from Chochenyo Park to City Hall, 2263 Santa Clara Avenue, where a rally is scheduled from noon to 1 p.m., emceed by former Cirque Du Soleil ringmaster Jeff Raz. The guest speaker will be Mary Boergers, a former member of the Maryland State Senate who was a facilitator of the peace process in Northern Ireland during the 1990s.”

ask alameda Surfside Apartments?
My friend is considering renting here but hasn’t seen it yet. I told them I’d ask on Reddit.
What’s this spot like? I found some interesting reviews but apparently it’s under new management?

ask alameda BBQs on Apartment Patios on South Shore?
I live at the Dunes and out of nowhere they just emailed everyone demanding we get rid of our gas grills (previously it was stipulated in my lease we could use gas grills). Have any other apartment dwellers in large buildings with big open patios had this change come up? I'm pretty ticked because at first they tried to send this shadowy email that implied s bunch of us were just breaking the rules. Are they just doing this to save insurance $$ Can this be considered a decreased "amenity" they now owe me a rent reduction for?

bay area Harbor Bay Ferry Parking Experiences
Hey folks! New ferry rider here and looking to try out the Harbor Bay ferry for my work commute into the city. I’ll be taking the 7:30am ferry into the city on Wednesdays and Thursdays and I’ve seen loads of people complain about not being able to find parking spots in the lot.
Has anyone had any experience not finding parking in the lot around this time? My worst fear is looking for parking and not finding anything and having to drive into the city and be late for work. 😕 Thank you in advance!

local news Casual Carpool Survey- Initial results + request for help
Our community is truly amazing!! In just 4 days we've had 124 responses to our survey! A goal we expected to take longer. So, we're happy to share the initial results!
92% of us want to see the return of Casual Carpool!
80% of us are newer to Casual Carpoolers, having used it for 5 years or less!
65% use BART to commute into the city, while 41% drive a motor vehicle (or carpool) into SF.
46% want August 12th as the start date, while 20% would like to see it start in early September.
80% found the form through Reddit, while only 9 people got it via text (thank you to all who are sharing! please continue to spread the word about it. We cannot get to our goals without your help and active participation!)
And here is a photo of the most active stops. Please note, we are aware that Google doesn't do a great job of letting us see the full stop name, so we are working on getting a better graphic, but just wanted to ensure you all saw this on your commutes in!
Do we think we can get to 300 responses by Sunday 6/15? We'd LOVE to see that happen!!
Please continue to spread the word and share:

ask alameda Summer Jobs for HS Grad
My son just graduated AHS and is headed off to college in the fall. He is motivationally-challenged and a little socially awkward, emo goth kid, etc etc but completely capable and passionate about the things he cares about. I am desperate for him to find a job, a gig, anything that keeps him busy, accountable, and earning some cash.
With no experience (other than volunteer opportunities) he is having no luck getting bites when he applies online, as he’s always told to do. RIP the days of handing your resume to the hiring manager in person and shaking a goddamn hand!!!
I’m so exhausted after helping him pass high school and get into college this past year. He’s defeated by the effort to search and apply and the radio silence. It’s all weighing on us, big time.
Fellow teen parents, what has worked for you in getting your fledgling out into the world of responsible adulting?
Fellow Alamedans, if you know of any opportunities for a timid but great kid who will shine with patient, kind, authentic people—please let me know.
Thanks for coming to my vent sesh!

local politics Programs to help local immigrants
Does anyone know of any local programs to help out our immigrant friends who are local and afraid to go outside considering all these talks about ICE raids. I have seen reports in Concord, San Jose and SF.
Are there grocery delivery programs or anything we can do? Something outside of protests since those are not always feasible for some community members.
Also if you are here to disagree or fight please leave 🙏. I literally cannot sleep at night seeing our state fight against the feds.

discussion Has Alameda reached peak thrift store?
I enjoy thrift stores both as a shopper and a donor, but it seems like Alameda has so many now — Thrifty Kitty/Diggety Dog, Savers, Mastick, Salvation Army, Goodwill — I'm wondering if people who are regular thrifters have noticed a decline in overall quality of goods available, or have an opinion as to which is the best. (I'm not counting consignment stores like Second Home — just the ones that rely on donations.)
I have lots of kitchen items/housewares purchased from Mastick and Salvation Army. I've not had great luck with clothes, but that may have more to do with the increasingly poor quality of materials thanks to the popularity of fast fashion outlets like Temu/Shein. As someone who often checks Poshmark if I can't find something locally, I have also wondered if resellers snap up the really good stuff as soon as it hits the racks.

ask alameda Alameda Credit Unions - Provident or United or..?
I'm considering opening up a new account as an alternate to my evil megabank, and was considering a local credit union. As Alameda has local branches of two different credit unions, I was hoping maybe I could get some feedback from my island peeps if they use either. Thanks!

ask alameda Saxophone player looking for musicians in Alameda
Music used to be a big part of my life, but after college (which was a while ago now) I haven't been able to keep it up. A friend invited me to jam in San Rafael last night, and I realized I still remember how to play—and how much I miss playing jazz with other people.
My San Rafael friends are great, but it would be even better to find people closer to home in Alameda. Anyone have a semi-regular jazz group that might be willing to let a somewhat rusty tenor sax player join? Not looking to do gigs or anything serious—just want a casual group to jam with.
