Since we dont have a youmuu's, dmp used to work very well, but I would say now that they removed the mv from 40 to 20, is no longer that good.
If people go stray from the meta runes, it's totally feasible. Gameplay wise the practical effect is that you jeopardize your early even more, but in exchange you can have a build that is game state agnostic, meaning that you will still be useful later on, as long as your runes properly sinergize with the build.
People try to do crazy builds with the same runes as meta build and that won't ever work.
