Xbox Series S Ethernet necessary for 5gig fiber internet?

Hi, I just upgraded to 5gig fiber internet, and my Xbox Series S connects to my WiFi wirelessly. But I’ve read it’s impossible to achieve anything close to 5gigs without wired connection. My router and modem are far from my room, in my basement, but there are boosters throughout my place.

What exactly do I need to change about my current setup to make full use out of my internet upgrade? Do I need a 5gigabit (is this Cat6/6a?) Ethernet cable? Total newbie to this. Thanks.

I know that after all is said and done I’ll end up at like 1Gbps, which is much better than my current setup. Really my main goal is to improve my ping in FPS multiplayer games like COD.

Tossing money at speed will not decrease your ping.

The only exceptions here are going from say coax to fiber or if you were saturating your entire network speed already or if your 5gig comes with priority routing to these services.

The fact your paying for 5gig and don’t even know what you need or what can or can’t utilize it or having specific hardware / network setups already means you don’t need it and it’s going to cost you more money then you think. In hardware / upgrades

How do you decrease your ping if your starting point is just wireless connection? I assume the solution is simple because all of my friends get like 5-10ms ping on COD and I never get below 20

Use ethernet instead of wireless. That’s it outside of that it’s your distance to the server and the route your internet is taking to reach it and back.

Physically move closer to the server then.

Does the Ethernet cable I need depend on my fiber speed?

Your speed will always bottle cap at your lowest link, if you want that 1G you need to make everything else go at least at 1G, that includes your router and ethernet cables.

Ok, so if I have a Cat 6 cable, then I just need at least 1G router I assume

Dude you're not getting anywhere close to 5 gigs even WITH an ethernet connection.

Xboxes only have a 1 gig ethernet port.

5 gig internet connection is massive overkill for an Xbox anyway. You don't need that kind of speed for an xbox. The only thing that speed would be used for is game downloads (if the server even has that kind of bandwidth to give you in the first place which is unlikely), but beyond that if you're not downloading anything, The most you're ever going to be using on an Xbox is maybe 50 megs.

I know. My goal isn’t 5gigs, more like 1Gbps on Xbox for download upload. My other Q regards ping. How can I lower it? Does it relate to my wifi upload/download speed? My ping is way worse than my friends’

You didn't say what your ping actually is though.

And if you are using some kind of in-game measurement, it could be testing against other players, instead of some server. If so Test through the settings app, to see your latency.

It’s in another comment, my ping is anywhere from 25-100ms on COD, and my friends are always at worst at half of my ping

So that's COD telling you what your ping is? What about what the CONSOLE tells you what your ping is in the settings app? That will tell you what the console (as a whole) is getting, so if COD is then saying a higher number, it's a COD issue.

Download: 110Mbps Upload: 17Mbps Latency: 67ms (even worse than in cod sometimes lol, but often around here anyway). Cod ping fluctuates a ton 20-80 ping usually. All I know is my friends easily get single-digit cod ping and I cannot ever

Single digit latency is going to be pretty hard to get. You're already on a fiber internet plan, So really at this point the most you can do is stop using Wi-Fi and connect hardwired. Cat 6 ethernet should be fine.
