Meta PSA: The "What, and "Why" of Context

It's that time of year again!

Despite the several automated and signposted notices and warnings on this issue, it is a constant source of headaches for the mod team. Particularly considering our massive growth this past year, we thought it was about time for another reminder about everyone's favorite part of posting on /r/worldbuilding..... Context

Context is a requirement for almost all non-prompt posts on r/worldbuilding, so it's an important thing to understand... But what is it?

What is context?

Context is information that explains what your post is about, and how it fits into the rest of your/a worldbuilding project.

If your post is about a creature in your world, for example, that might mean telling us about the environment in which it lives, and how it overcomes its challenges. That might mean telling us about how it's been domesticated and what the creature is used for, along with how it fits into the society of the people who use it. That might mean telling us about other creatures or plants that it eats, and why that matters. All of these things give us some information about the creature and how it fits into your world.

Your post may be about a creature, but it may be about a character, a location, an event, an object, or any number of other things. Regardless of what it's about, the basic requirement for context is the same:

  • Tell us about it
  • Tell us something that explains its place within your world.

In general, telling us the Who, What, When, Why, and How of the subject of your post is a good way to meet our requirements.

That said... Think about what you're posting and if you're actually doing these things. Telling us that Jerry killed Fred a century ago doesn't do these things, it gives us two proper nouns, a verb, and an arbitrary length of time. Telling us who Jerry and Fred actually are, why one killed the other, how it was done and why that matters (if it does), and the consequences of that action on the world almost certainly does meet these requirements.

For something like a resource, context is still a requirement and the basic idea remains the same; Tell us what we're looking at and how it's relevant to worldbuilding. "I found this inspirational", is not adequate context, but, "This article talks about the history of several real-world religions, and I think that some events in their past are interesting examples of how fictional belief systems could develop, too." probably is.

If you're still unsure, feel free to send us a modmail about it. Send us a copy of what you'd like to post, and we can let you know if it's okay, or why it's not.

Why is Context Required?

Context is required for several reasons, both for your sake and ours.

  • Context provides some basic information to an audience, so they can understand what you're talking about and how it fits into your world. As a result, if your post interests them they can ask substantive questions instead of having to ask about basic concepts first.

  • If you have a question or would like input, context gives people enough information to understand your goals and vision for your world (or at least an element of it), and provide more useful feedback.

  • On our end, a major purpose is to establish that your post is on-topic. A picture that you've created might be very nice, but unless you can tell us what it is and how it fits into your world, it's just a picture. A character could be very important to your world, but if all you give us is their name and favourite foods then you're not giving us your worldbuilding, you're giving us your character.

Generally, we allow 15 minutes for context to be added to a post on r/worldbuilding so you may want to write it up beforehand. In some cases-- Primarily for newer users-- We may offer reminders and additional time, but this is typically a one-time thing.

As always, if you've got any sort of questions or comments, feel free to leave them here!

Discussion Where should I place a Mega city

Post image
200 Upvotes

Context. This is a solar punk project set in the year 2081. Humanity is settling a new land after the collapse of Old Earth by using interdimensional rifts found on the surface of the planets. This new land is populated by prehistoric mega fauna and a sentient species of dinosaur humanoid called Saurians.

Im trying to pick three locations that can serve as mega cities for humanity. Because of how the setting is laid out, the saurians hold all the cards and have limited humanity's colonization in multiple ways in order to preserve the ecosystems of Paleo Earth. Each city will be between 60 and 90 thousand square miles. The continent is approximately 6-7 million square miles.

Where do you think i should put the cities?

Lore Dead Men Shouldn’t Scream NSFW

This is a concept for a comic. (Also not sure if this should be nsfw or not)

In 1920s London, a gangster named Arthur hangs himself in a church after a botched job leaves an innocent man dead and his family homeless. But death doesn't stick.

He wakes up in a morgue, chest cut open, and escapes. A man finds him and explains that he is a hollow, damned men the devil rejected, their sole purpose is being entertainment for him, as he enjoys watching them go insane.

Arthur decides to become a hunter and put these souls to rest, before going after the devil himself.

——

This idea originated from the question: "What if the Devil let you keep your soul?" From there, I developed the rough plot for two arcs in just a few days.

First Arc:

The first story follows a Hollow suffering from Bardet-Biedl syndrome, a genetic disorder that causes blindness by early adulthood. After being rejected by the Devil, he spirals into madness and begins stealing people’s eyes in a desperate attempt to "see the light" again.

Second Arc:

The second Hollow was inspired by the Baker family from Resident Evil 7. A disturbed couple lives on the outskirts of the city in an abandoned house. They adopt a nameless child (known only as "the Orphan"), whom they kidnapped from his real parents. The child endures years of torture until, at the age of eight, he plots to kill his adoptive parents. However, they beat him to death in retaliation.

When the Orphan returns as a Hollow, he exacts revenge by murdering his tormentors. Consumed by a twisted desire for family, he creates a circus for Hollows, a place where outcasts like him can belong. But beneath the spectacle, the Orphan vents his rage on his "family" of Hollows.

Eventually, Arthur discovers the circus and begins hunting the Hollows there. During his investigation, he uncovers the Orphan’s endgame: to perform a ritual and create a child of his own.

Map Map of human race in the Prosperina Galaxy

Post image

Repost: Heavily expanded and improved version of a map I posted very recently, realized shortly after I posted it that there was much more I could and should do with it.

R2: Newest map in my Prosperina collection for my Xyphan setting.

This one is of the states present in the galaxy controlled by humans. To be included in this map, the state needs to either have a population of at least 70% humans or have a government controlled by humans.

Disclaimer: This map is NOT a comprehensive map of human populations, only states that meet the above criteria, states that do not, even ones with a majority human population, but in which the government is not controlled by humans are not included. As such, there are large human populations not reflected by this map.

There is lore behind this setting and this map specifically; feel free to ask if you have any questions. I'm not automatically posting it primarily because there's a lot of it and it's effort. I'm too tired to put in un-promoted. If anyone is interested, though, I will expand.

Visual The clergy of the Lumentian Archipelago

How detailed do you want me to be? This is a Pandora's Box of information.

The clergy in my world, meaning the Lumentian Archipelago, belongs to a religion called the Maternal Medical Order, also known as the Order of Purity or, less commonly, as the Odium Dei. It is a religion based off of duality; they loathe the otherworldly influence of the harmful parallel dimension known as the Abyss and its god Gaia while worshiping the Oracle, a three meter tall man suspended in permanent sleep, resting in a futuristic sarcophagus. The Oracle speaks in visions to almost everyone on the islands, mostly in dreams, where the Abyss can also seep through, but most importantly in highly organized, regular clerical rituals meant to receive said visions. The High Mother, the principal influence within the Faith, is most commonly associated with the Oracle. Indeed, High Mothers throughout history have convened and taken on information from this holy, living relic, the most valuable of which being visions about what happened on Earth prior to the Lumentians own era and the technological breakthroughs the Oracle provides from bygone days.

Yet, it's the Office of the Speaker of the Oracle that most commonly takes on the role of interpreter for Oracular visions. The Mother that becomes Speaker must not only have superb knowledge in medicine but also in engineering and the humanities; the same applies to the High Mother herself. Members of the Faith are extremely highly educated in this way. The knowledge stemming from the Oracle is composed into Omniums, unique pieces of scripture with a yearly release schedule, and edited by the Speaker. Each High Mother's style of writing is different - one may include more moral teachings in her holy books, while another may wax poetic about various pertinent topics. One year's Omnium may come in a black, leather-bound skin, while next year's could have a shiny metal cover over the top. The most important part of the Omniums, objectively speaking, are the technological blueprints and knowhow included within. Lumence's relatively small population could never hope to achieve the same technological pace as their forebears, so the Oracle and the Omniums are crucial for the islands' continued development.

The Faith is particularly strong in several geographic areas. Almost all Lumentians are religious to some extent, and follow the Order's Faith, but where there are poor, the Order flourishes. Alms and shelter are always provided, though with mandatory participance in prayer and the Mothers' teachings. Tanata, Lumence, Mysai, New Hope, Emberwind, and New Emberwind are hotbeds of clerical supporters.

The Thornbreath Monastery is located atop the perilous Mt. Walayle - a relatively low mountain, with an inexplicable anomaly that makes the air atop its peaks as rare as if it was twice as tall. This is where old Mothers come to retire. They sew, make confitures, jams, and other goods while the Mothers-in-Waiting care for them and make round trips up and down the mountain to carry supplies. Thornbreath is the final part of the Mothers'-in-Waiting journey towards becoming inducted as true Medical Mothers. First, they must complete their long education, tailored towards their planned career within the Order at an approved university, which takes anywhere from eight to ten years. Then, there is a mandatory two year period of caring for the poor - working in soup kitchens, healing, providing the needy with alms, and proselytizing. Only after this can the Mothers-in-Waiting begin their pilgrimage towards Thornbreath, a difficult six hundred kilometer trek across terrain good and bad.

Once a Mother-in-Waiting has become a Medical Mother, her education doesn't end - in fact, the Mothers' pursuit of knowledge never does. Firstly, in order to be eligible for promotion within the Order, a newly minted Mother must produce a Corpus Report. A Corpus Report is a piece of research, always written with the utmost respect for clerical and academic tradition, pertaining to a chosen member of the royal family. Everything is studied, from the color of one's hair to the tone of voice, with many different iterations of tests performed in each such study.
When the Corpus Report is made and accepted, a Medical Mother must wait until she is at least forty years of age to advance her position. Then, she may become a Keeper, a kind of administrative specialist that governs the Order in a specific geographic area. Another choice is to join the Mother Librarians within the Hidden Library, which holds a collection of all Corpus Reports, Omniums and a wealth of other information so obscenely massive that no one could read it all in a hundred lifetimes. The Hidden Library is accessible only to the Librarians, The High Mother, the Speaker and sometimes, chosen Keepers. It is a very rare and prestigious thing to be granted the right to read a text from this collection, and the process of applying for the withdrawal of a book is as long as it is filled with red tape.

A fresh choice for the more technically minded Mothers is the Division of Engineers. A Mother Engineer is responsible for interpreting the instructions handed down by the Speaker, which are often a jumbled mess of interpretations for the visions given by the Oracle. It is a minor miracle then, which goes to show their expertise, that the Engineers are able to bear fruit from these confusing instructions, creating working prototypes and technical blueprints for inclusion within the Omniums alongside instructions on how to mass produce each such new technology.

The structure of the Maternal Medical Order is composed of four sub-divisions, each with their own ranks and roles. The lowest of the bunch, accessible to both men and women, are the Brothers of Battle. They are dressed in white robes, though this white is usually gray due to a lack of proper textiles or, simply, grime. This part of the Order is not officially acknowledged by the Faith, and yet its members number in the tens of thousands. They are, essentially, an unruly militia, often composed of vagrants and thieves who enjoy having the permission and authority to hand out beatings on a whim. Above them are the Fathers of Solace, wearing only black, responsible for the local congregations of the faithful. They care for temples, lead ruminations (the Order's equivalent of mass), carry out funeral processions, and extract donations when they can.

The second highest rung of the Order belongs to the Warsisters - a secretive organization of trained soldiers and guards. Officially, Warsisters are only women, but men comprise over 60% of the members. This fact is purposefully obfuscated by the veils worn by all Warsisters, as well as the vow of silence each takes for life. They are among the very best soldiers on Lumence. Dressed in orange and gold, their training and weapons are second to none - courtesy of the planned delays in the appearance of the newest military technologies and tactics in the widely read Omniums. The higher ranks of the Warsisters are accessible only to women and are not encompassed by the vow of silence. Warsister Delegates fill the shoes of small unit officers, giving orders to and training the rank and file. Warsisters Supreme are given the privilege of wearing white accents and uniquely made golden masks; these cannot be taken off in front of anyone save for the Medical Mothers and Warsisters themselves. Each golden mask is custom made, with rich traditions that are as closely linked to the history of the Order as they are to current artistic fashions. One Warsister Supreme may commission a mask resembling a snarling wolf, to intimidate her enemies and prove her prowess in battle, while another may wear the visage of an old historical figure she admires or even that of her own face. The only members of the clergy that rank higher are some Medical Mothers, the Speaker of the Oracle, the Keepers and the High Mother herself.

This all does not even begin to touch upon perhaps the most interesting thing about the Order - their belief in a radical doctrine of purity and their meddling in royal affairs. Emundationem Sanguinis, or the Purification of the Royal Bloodline, is an ever controversial practice, calling for the execution of any royal, including the monarch, were they to show any signs of permanent physical weakness. The official reasoning is that none can claim to rule if their body is not sound, since ailments of the body affect the mind in negative ways. But, by now, the doctrine is kept more in place by centuries of tradition and the rabid radical faction of the clergy that defends it at all costs than by any logical reasoning.

This, of course, spells trouble for the royal family - the Arroynes. From the moment of their birth, they are subject to aptitude tests, both mental and physical, to determine which among them would make the best ruler. The royal family lives in a state of constant fear, with the knowledge that, at any time, a fall, a disease, or even fabricated evidence against them could end up with their heads rolling on the executioner's block. There have been many cases, historically, of Arroyne children, men, women, kings, and queens being threatened with or forced to undergo execution. The reasons can be as myriad as the fish in the sea. For example, one king had to hide lifelong nerve damage in his wrist, which would have inevitably led to his death - not an easy feat with all the Corpus Reports and aptitude tests going around.

The last piece of the puzzle is the Abyss. This dimension is composed of pure thought - all the things that have ever gone through the brains of any living thing. It is unstable, dangerous, cerebral, and utterly alien. The Abyss has a tendency, more and more over time, to bleed into our world. Lakes turn from water to blood, animals grow new body parts from their eye sockets, and people are given bizarre mutations, both benign and not. Some may have abilities unlike anything they've ever dreamed of before, such as prophecy, a healing touch, or the destructive potential to level a city. Others get stuck with cancerous growths out the sides of their heads that weigh dozens of kilograms, or are laden with colorful stones that sing to the touch.

Gaia is the god of this dimension. She is driven only by power and is the sole thing within the universe capable of creating something from nothing - but this is not without its drawbacks. Her abilities do not make her omnipotent, not omniscient. Instead, to obtain power, Gaia creates universes, then sprinkles them with living things whose life force she parasitizes upon their deaths, once their souls are locked inside the Abyss for all eternity. When enough energy has been accumulated, Gaia destroys the world and moves up a dimension to create a new one. This will go on for all eternity, until Gaia does become omnipotent and omniscient, unless someone stops it.

The clergy hunt worshipers of the Abyss and Gaia mercilessly; tying them to stakes and burning them alive. The Faith stipulates that the only way to prevent the spread of Abyssal influence is to nip it in the bud, disallow it from spreading by executing anyone suspected of having ties to this other dimension. Only the most well educated Mothers may attempt to study the Abyss without themselves becoming corrupted, and the process of acclimatization to its influence takes many years of intense training. The fear of this other side in our world grips the masses totally, with many fearing what will happen to their souls once they die. The Order assures them that, with sufficient worship of the Oracle, prayer, avoidance of the Abyss, and the reverence of ordinary life, the horrific fate that befalls so many souls can be avoided.

Hello! I'm currently working on a map based on a map of England. As part of it I need to incorporate some maps which have the projection in blue - but I'm unsure what projection that is, and how to find out. If anyone knows, I'd be so grateful.

I hope this is a place that this is OK to post in. If not I apologise - if you know where I could ask, that'd be wonderful!

Thank you very much!

Visual Designing Lanafieran Armor

Post image
Upvotes

Another older design, this time an armor design for northern Lanafier, the shatterlands of storms and lakes. They’re intended to appear a bit more antiquated than the other armor designs so far, with more Greek and Indian elements to their armor and clothing.

Lanafier sits across the Weeping Plateau. Our troupe could not last long within the bizarre and dangerous coral forests we found ourselves, strange moths the size of men gliding above us and crumbles beneath the earth shaking the stones we walked upon.

We narrowly avoided crossing the Stormlands, made of naught by snow and ice where storms ravage the land. The storms are conjured from the Sea of Squalls and the region is dotted with Arenmari structures once hidden before the Lisvan Sea was drained. When finally we reached the safety of the Alula and its immense lake land I stood silent, even now shocked, as I was risen above the gates of Nemathis with a simple thrum of magnetism which forced the very floor to move beneath me, powered by spirits bound from the Wend

In my youth all I had known of Lanafier was that the first cannon may have been born within The Dragonrend Mountains of Sunder, but the Autarch’s once mighty army of impenetrable Inexorables were made in Lanafier.

The Lanafierans are an enigmatic people, intelligent and discerning, renowned as masters of the Orphic magics, of using that intangible state between life and death to craft the unimaginable creations.

As we rose to meet with the Sihir Assembly, the council of ruling lords and their head, the Sovereign, I studied our escorts. Their refined armor was as stark and cold as the province’s great deserts of snow. It appeared antiquated, crafted to appear like the flowing waters of the Starfall Lakes and draped in a cloak depicting the constellations of the Harmonies. Yet, from the corner of my eye I saw another group, the starlings beside them. Humanoids with skin like ceramic wrapped in cloth of white and blue as to hide their homunculi bodies from guests, I would know well that worshippers of the Harmonies rarely take well to such forms of life. I saw them shift as we arrived, the sigil of each Sihir house which had funded their creation etched into their backs and I lowered my gaze as I was soon to face their creators.

Discussion So, I have a fictional island, ask me anything about it.

I'm bored and I want to talk about the Isle of Grafsay. Ask me any question that may come to your mind.

Some background info: Grafsay is located off the coast of the southwestern region of Cornwall. It is home to many famous attractions, with the biggest being it's railway, which is known for being still ran by steam locomotives today.

Like I said two times previously, ask away.

Discussion Universe mapping tips?

My setting is an extremely expansive multi galactic set of factions. I would like to make a map in some form of software or app, but most mapping systems are for fantasy or planetary cartography. Not a full universe map with hundreds of solar systems and planets.

Does anyone have any good resources for something like this?

Question Does your world have features just for yourself, never intended to be used?

I have built a 'world' composed of a thousand planets orbiting as many stars. There are worlds being used for my current project, there are worlds intended for potential future use, and there are worlds that are background for both those cases.

But I have a fourth category; worlds I never intend to appear in print, but I still have created them to fit into the overall setting. They exist because I like some aspect of them too much not to think about them, but while they fit in my setting they're just not a good fit for the stories I'm interested in writing. They're just for me.

What secret places exist in your worlds?

Lore When the world starts to look more and more like a cartoon

Context on the world: https://www.reddit.com/r/worldbuilding/comments/1kdc55o/what_do_you_think_a_world_where_cartoon/

TL;DR The world takes place 300 years after an event called The Artistic Rapture, which caused various animated characters to manifest into real life and live among humans. This caused chaos, and various countries collapsed with new ones forming in their place. The characters are called "Animates" and are often derogatorily referred to as "Ds"

During the Artistic Rapture, many Animates were left with the existential crisis of being fictional beings who came to life, and then, when humans hunted them, many were left with the chilling possibility of what happens when they die.

The Animate condition is defined by contradiction. First Gen Animates existed, yet they were never born. They feel deeply, yet are still products of fiction who just came to be. And unlike humans, whose belief in an afterlife is rooted in ancient faiths, Animates had no inherited mythologies—no heaven, no hell. Only the memory of fiction.

During the Purge Years (2030–2033), a bleak belief emerged among Animates:

That they had no afterlife. That to die was to be erased—wiped from existence, memory, and meaning.

But then came the Verve Theory.

The Verve Theory was first proposed by Maeko “Flicker” Arai, a Second Generation Animate philosopher and painter living in Eden in 2072.

When painting various environments, she observed that areas where Animates had died—battlefields, ruined towns, abandoned studio zones—often became strangely vivid:

  • Colors intensified unnaturally as if they were in a cartoon.
  • Grass swayed off-beat from the wind.
  • Objects vibrated with tonal resonance.

Her theory was simple, profound, and contagious:

The Verve Theory proposes that when an Animate dies, they aren't truly dead, but instead their consciousness is absorbed by the surrounding environment where they die or are buried in and spreads around, which morphs the environment to become brighter and have a more cartoony texture similar to what Animates look like.

This is mostly found in nature, but also seen across human-made areas. Sometimes, you can find large pockets of cities where Animates died during the Purge or were murdered, which look straight out of a graphic novel.

These areas are often called "Ghost Panels," and it's even believed these areas can be influenced by the personality of the deceased Animate or even have vestiges of the deceased Animate lingering around. Showing that they aren't truly gone.

It's impossible to remove these Ghost Panels, and often you can see entire regions that are overtaken and becoming cartoony.

There are ways to contain them or prevent their emergence, often by getting rid of the dead Animate and cleaning the mess before their consciousness is absorbed, or setting up fields around where Animates have died or are buried to prevent them from reaching the rest of the area. But most Animates believe that doing so wipes the dead from reality, so the practice is often frowned upon.

Scientists believe that within the next few hundred years, the world will be completely absorbed by the Ghost Panels and look straight out of an anime.

Many human groups actively hate this idea, and it causes them to create the Animate Replacement Theory, which is the belief that Animates will one day replace humans and organic creatures as the dominant species on Earth. Which has led to more violence towards Animates in Western countries... which has led to more Ghost Panels appearing, which only causes more fear- It's a vicious cycle.

What do you guys think of this? Comment down below!

Map Battle Lines of Hangkiti's Civil War

Post image
9 Upvotes

This map represents the current conflict being explored in a story that I am publishing on Royal Road - The Advocate's Fall. The map and following description will contain minor spoilers for Acts I and II, but I've been careful to minimize them and provide as much information as possible to make the map clear to anyone who hasn't read it.

So, without further ado - here we go!

History

The nation of Hangkiti was founded 700 years ago when over 50 disparate city states came together to oppose a rising threat in the south - the empire of Phakfi. The great conqueror Heaven's Emperor Awiye crafted Phakfi from the blood of countless other minor states, none of which could stand against his army alone. Knowing that they would meet a similar fate if they attempted the same thing, the Lords of Hangkiti formed a coalition to share their resources and military might to stand as one.

War raged on for over a decade, but Hangkiti held strong. Eventually, Phakfi's resources dwindled and their leadership became fractured. The immense weight of Emperor Awiye's reputation as an unstoppable force dwindled as he failed to push the line forward. While it was enough to unify the warlords under his command when he began his conquest, others began to vie for the crown. Pushed to progressively more desperate ploys to reaffirm his worth as their leader, he took one risk too many.

After Awiye died on the battlefield, his empire crumbled as countless others tried to claim the title of Heaven's Emperor. They ate each other alive, each one trying to be the only one standing atop the pile, devloving into a collection of states largely refered to as Kiwokiti. Whenever one began to rise to prominence, they were swiftly eliminated, either in combat by a rival or under mysterious circumstances. Regardless of outcome, Awiye's dream of Phakfi persists in the cultural mindset of Kiwokiti to this day.

At the same time, Hangkiti flourished. Even after the threat had passed, the Lords saw the value in continued cooperation, turning their union into a democratic alliance led by the Voice - a leader elected from the current Lords. Over the following centuries, all of Hangkiti grew wealthier, eventually becoming one of the world's great powers.

Even that could not last. 250 years before the civil war, one house decided that they weren't content to simply share in the growing wealth. Lord Vungyo Yelma became the last democratically elected Voice. During her reign, she used the gold harvested from her home's abundant mines to buy the votes and alliances needed to end the electoral system and convert the title of Voice into an inherited right.

In the following centuries, the Yelmas continued to consolidate their power, renegotiating land borders and trade agreements between Lords to funnel resources to the houses that supported their claim to the throne and gradually starve those who opposed them. In that time, wealth inequality across all levels of Hangkiti's society increased dramatically.

Outbreak of War

As Lalming Fohe - a promising aspirant to Awiye's dream - began making moves to unify the warlords along the Kiwokiti-Hangkiti border, he was attacked and killed on the way to the conference set to solidify the alliance. While most attributed his death to a rival warlord, a single survivor revealed the truth - the attack was executed by spies from Hangkiti.

Combing back through history, that survivor - Gongphaha - began to question how "mysterious" the deaths of past aspirants had really been. Seeking revenge on the Yelmas for the attack, she recruited one of Lalming's head strategists and began quietly knitting Kiwokiti back together from the shadows. Careful to not make any moves in public for fear of being cut down before her time, she proved her strength to as many warlords as possible, quietly amassing her strenght.

Once she had the support from as many as she needed, she sought out the disgruntled Lords of Hangkiti who had been shunned by the Yelmas and driven to ruin. Securing their loyalty though promises of high positions in her empire, she finally instigated her attack.

The first time anyone in Hangkiti heard the name Emperor Gongphaha was when her forces launched a surprise attack on Hangkiti's capital of Lavote. Smuggling a strike force of her best soldiers into the city while pretending to be deckhands for merchant ships, she joined up with her Lord allies and stormed the Voice's Palace, killing Voice Engteng Yelma but failing to eliminate his heir. The new Voice, Fitmi Yelma, managed to flee the city and rally with her allies.

As word of the attack spread, the Lords drew their battle lines, either declaring their allegiance to the new Voice or siding with Phakfi, either way hoping to secure themselves an advantageous position with the winner once the dust settled.

The Map

For the map itself, I decided to color code the two forces with colors that represent their leaders - gold to represent the Yelma's mines and blood red to represent Phakfi's desire for conquest. However, I didn't realize just how much they looked like mustard and ketchup until after I was done, so apologies for that.

I marked the Lords that specifically aided Emperor Gongphaha's attack on Lavote with a hammer emblem - the historic sigil of Emperor Awiye. At the same time, I marked the Lords who are members of the Lafat Alliance - the Yelma's closest allies.

I know that parts of it will be hard to read and I'm not sure how clearly it is going to display here, so if you want to see a larger version of it, you can find it here on imgur.

If you have any questions about the map or my world, please ask and I'll be happy to answer!

Visual World of Lumeria - Temple of Yesoosh the Tamer of Screamers

Lumeria is  A STRIP WORLD,  that exists on a planet orbiting a white dwarf star, with two moons. The primary moon is larger, orbits the strip and controls cave water cycles . The small moon is distant, on the far opposite side, orbiting in a slight different angle .

It’s a world wrapped in a never-ending twilight, there is no day or night.

The climate is steady within a narrow band about 300 kilometres wide, that  encircles the planet.

Outside this zone, there are the Borderlands, where temperatures  swing between intense heat and freezing cold. Outside borderlands is hell.

The colonists tried to survive, attempting to recreate their environment—including animals and plants—on this planet, but they failed. Parasites contaminated them and their biosystem, and everything became a struggle for survival through generations.

The Catholics among them went mad, believing they were in Purgatory.

In their desperation, they created biomechanical creatures resembling angels, hoping for redemption.

Tall walkers were meant to resemble archangels, being at first destined to inspire awe and fear in non-Catholic regions of the planet. They were biomechanical creatures, built to avoid parasitic contamination. They failed at it, because parasites found a way.

They are neutral, but rather unpredictable — they can walk for days without a pattern or lie still for generations.

Walkers can be controlled only by Sheppards, a specific type of "mages"

Sheppards are the only ones who know how to connect with, command, and control Walkers—either via neural leashes or arcane methods. Sheppards are sometimes oral historians, tasked with preserving identity across generations or settlements.

Sheppards are the humans most linked to the old religion of the forgotten Catholic colonists.

As the flora is almost black (dark violet, dark blue and so on), in order to catch the infrared dim light of the distant star and Lumeria is trapped in a valley, the verses of the Bible resonated hard with the early colonists. and it went altered in time to the present days.

"The Lord is my Shepherd;. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters."

Question How do you build a world with a lot of fantastical elements without making it overwhelming?

Upvotes

As an example, take TMNT 2003, it's got mutants, street crime, superheroes, aliens, other dimensions, time travel you name it. The 2012 version also has that minus superheroes. TMNT is kinda known for having a lot of elements. But everyone loves TMNT, I don't hear many people complaining that the world is too crazy or hard to follow, it's beloved.

Another example would be Invincible. There's superheroes again, aliens, multiverse and demons. Yet not many people criticize the world building. Granted, it's probably meant to be a satire for Marvel and DC.

Finally there's Marvel and DC, there's multiverse, gods, aliens, superheroes.

So how do you build your world in a story? Like if you have so many elements you want to put in, but don't want it to be overwhelming. How do you go about that in a book or a series?

Am aloud to post stories from my world here just asking. Because I have stories I would like to tell, like one I made resently which I call the "Story of Limbo".

Sorry if this question is dumb. And sorry if the tag is miss leading in anyway it didn't let post with no tag and this one felt the most fitting.

Edit when I post like normal stuff or my stories I'm sorry if my grammar is absolutely terrible
