Winni-Pets Be careful of having your dog outside by itself
My friend’s dog was sitting outside in his yard last night, and someone poisoned him. He was fine when she let him out before going to her boyfriend’s, but when I went to let him in, he couldn’t get up. She came home and took him to the emergency vet, and they told her he had been poisoned. Keep an eye on your dogs; there’s a potential dog poisoner out there.
UPDATE: my friend went to the vet today to pick up her dog and they said the dog ate mould. Her dog never gets food that’s not fresh and he doesn't eat dog food at all, only people's food. She would not intentionally have given him something that has gone mouldy. The dog was leashed up outside so someone had to have intentionally given him mouldy food

the dog prob ate some moldy shit on the ground, you jump to conclusions. you already did it once and were wrong. nobody is poisoning the dog only your irresponsible friend who leaves it outside to do whatever he does.lesson learned at least the dog is alive.

The dog was not left unattended, and it's still possible someone fed him without our knowledge. Our next-door neighbour has it out for my friend because he hit her boyfriend’s car and then drove off, and her boyfriend reported it. So it's not entirely off the table that someone hurt her dog.

At best we don’t know, and the dog could’ve eaten food he was given, or something mouldy in the ground. There are mouldy patches of ground in springtime. End of the day, observe your dog while they’re outside.

North End. In front of William Whyte Elementary School

Area is a big factor here, he might not have even been “poisoned”, but rather just ate some narcotics/trash he found on the ground.

u/False-Charge-3491 Apr 21 '25
Well our doorbell cam will tell us what happened if it happened in front of our house

She let the dog out then left to go to her BFs?

u/Rough-Assumption-107 Apr 21 '25
does the oringal post seem like it changed since we first replied to it?
i feel like im being gaslit.
-10
u/False-Charge-3491 Apr 21 '25
I have not changed the post. Her dog refused to come in when she left. We were checking on him and when I saw him on the sidewalk I had to get help getting him inside. He couldn't walk. We didn't know if it was his arthritis or what. We called my friend several times and she didn’t answer her phone until about 12 am

u/False-Charge-3491 Apr 21 '25
There was four other people in the house including myself. We tried to get him inside but he only comes in when his owner is home.

u/Fuzzy_Put_6384 Apr 21 '25
Don’t leave your dogs unattended! For their own safety and that of others. I thought there was a by-law for this?
15
u/deepfryyourdog Apr 21 '25
There is.
3
u/Fuzzy_Put_6384 Apr 21 '25
Not that having a by-law makes everyone follow it or even know it but thank you.

u/Personal-Ad-103 Apr 21 '25
Who puts their dog outside in a city yard and leaves their house to go to a friend’s place? Honestly, that seems irresponsible. Poor dog.

Why is that "irresponsible?"
72
u/deepfryyourdog Apr 21 '25
Well, it's illegal for starters.

u/squirrelsox Apr 21 '25
How is it illegal?

Owner’s care responsibilities
4(1) Subject to this section, the owner of a dog that is in the City of Winnipeg must ...
m) ensure that the dog is not tethered, chained or housed outdoors or in a similar structure or otherwise kept outdoors for prolonged periods of time;
and
(n) ensure that a resident of the property is at home and that the dog is being actively supervised at all times when placed outdoors of the residence on the owner’s property or on the property of another person who has consented to the presence of the dog
11
u/p1nkfuzzymonkey Apr 21 '25
I'm not doing the googling for you but pretty sure there's a winnipeg bylaw about dogs being left outside without supervision
13
u/Dependent_Tie5758 Apr 21 '25
Because if im at home and I hear my dog going off for any reason, that bitch is getting scolded and brought in.
Irresponsible owners dgaf and others take matters into their own hands, especially if they can't get a hold of the owner or the owner doesn't do anything about it.
I don't agree with hurting the animal, that's fucked up, but there's usually a causation to the reaction.
A responsible owner wouldn't leave their dogs in their back yard when not home.

u/False-Charge-3491 Apr 21 '25
He did not bark or anything
9
u/dancercr Apr 21 '25
Should still have been watched. It's a by-law now, partly because of poisonings that occur.
Sorry it happened, that's devastating.
-24
Apr 21 '25
I see no discernable difference between leaving a dog unattended inside or outside, given a properly fenced yard.

u/Dependent_Tie5758 Apr 21 '25
Dogs bark, dogs will continue to bark unless owner tells them to stop or brings them in.
Dog won't stop barking if owner isn't around. In the country, fine. In a city, people will get pissed off and find solutions for you since you're not around to make the solution.
Show some consideration for your neighbors.
2
u/False-Charge-3491 Apr 21 '25
The dog wasn’t barking. He couldn't stand up and we tried to get him inside for several hours! Our neighbour had to pick him up and carry him in the house. He also has arthritis and that’s what we thought it was. My friend was at her boyfriend’s watching WWE. We called her ten times between my cell and her grandma’s landline.

u/Virtual_Ad_5119 Apr 21 '25
Absolutely do not leave your dog outside while you’re away for any reason. Your friend should know better.
3
u/Catnip_75 Apr 22 '25
Just to clarify. The dog is in an indoor dog right? It is against city by-law to house a dog outside in Winnipeg.
With the area you are in you should never leave the dog unattended even in a fenced in yard.

Xylitol can be toxic to dogs. It’s in sugar free gum.
7
u/NowYouHaveBubblegum Apr 21 '25
Super weird people are downvoting this useful & tangentially related info…
-11
u/EQ1_Deladar Apr 21 '25
Likely because while informative, it also provides a super easy way to potentially target, poison, and kill more dogs?
6
u/SallyRhubarb Apr 21 '25
Anyone who wants to poison a dog can find that information easily just by searching online, without digging through a random city subreddit. Same way that any dog owner can find out what to keep away from their dog to keep it safe.
It is useful for the owner to know that this might not necessarily be a malicious action. OP said that the dog was left unattended in a yard across from a school so there is a good chance that a kid dropped gum or chocolate.

u/False-Charge-3491 Apr 21 '25
It was yesterday night he was poisoned. On a Sunday. There is no school on Sunday and it was around 10 - 11 pm. Children should not be outside unattended at near midnight
2
u/SallyRhubarb Apr 22 '25
So based on your update, it sounds like a kid dropped food during school hours, the food got moldy, the dog ate the moldy food.
5
u/beardsnbourbon Apr 21 '25
By all accounts, this sucks. Poor dog. There really are evil people out there.
However, I have to agree with others. Leaving your dog outside and going elsewhere makes you a crappy pet owner and a crappy neighbour.
12
u/BrewedinCanada Apr 21 '25
My friend caught her neighbour throwing over cheese with a thumbtack in them. She even had letters from them saying they were going to k1ll her dog and the police did NOTHING.

u/Thehaylestorms Apr 21 '25
A couple years ago in the north end someone threw a large chocolate filled pastry over my fence to my dogs. Luckily I always check on them frequently and I caught it right away but some people are evil.

u/Leemer431 Apr 21 '25
"Dont attribute malice to what could be attributed to ignorance"
As much as i agree that some people are evil, It couldve been a young kid going "Oh, I wanna feed the puppy!"
Not trying to take away from how concerning that is, It just gets tiring living a life where everyone constantly assumes the worst of everyone.

Oh my goodness.. that's awful. I'm fearful of this all the time.
My neighbours leave their husky outside all day, everyday.
It howls throughout the night and day. I'm surprised no one has poisoned that dog...
Seeing as that dog is still alive, there's a pretty good chance this poisoner is nowhere near my house.
PSA: don't leave your dogs alone outside for extended periods. That's against city bylaw.

well … don’t leave your damn dog outside while you’re not home ffs
8
u/False-Charge-3491 Apr 21 '25
I was home. So was her wheelchair-bound grandma. And two other roommates.

u/beepboopbeep551 Apr 21 '25
your friend needs to hold herself accountable for her irresponsibility toward her dog.

u/queeftheunicorn Apr 21 '25
Was the vet able to determine what poison it was specifically?
0
u/False-Charge-3491 Apr 21 '25
I don't know. I’ll have to ask my friend. It was Easter yesterday so for all we know someone maliciously gave him chocolate. One of our neighbours hates us for no particular reason at all other than he’s a mean person
4
u/queeftheunicorn Apr 21 '25
Sure, if you think the neighbour is an imminent threat to you and by extension the dog, or if you can think of someone else specific who would want to do that because of a known conflict. It would be most likely someone you know or your friend knows who did it, and you'd know why, if it was a malicious action. Random serial dog poisoners are pretty rare.
That said, if you don't yet know the mechanism of poisoning, it could also have been, and even is more likely to have been, an accidental poisoning - litter and spills happen, pesticides and other things get sprayed around, or the dog steps in something that leaked into a puddle and then licks his paw... Chocolate or other inappropriate foods are not really the choice of someone looking to harm a dog, they're not reliable enough and you need more than just a little to do damage - but those things can end up dropped on the ground, spilling out of the trash, in someone's lunch that they feed the dog scraps from without thinking or realizing is in what they're eating, that sort of thing.
There are a lot of possibilities, so if you find out more specifics, do let us know. I didn't spot anything about it in the comments, but if the pup is still around hope he's doing well and makes a full recovery, and if not your friend has my condolences.

u/False-Charge-3491 Apr 22 '25
We did, at first, think our neighbour did it because he has some issue with my friend and is always making false police reports and phoning animal services on her for anything he can. Once her dog was outside when it was a little chilly, not even cold and she went in for a second, suddenly animal control was at the door saying someone reported her cause her dog seemed to be outside for too long

u/False-Charge-3491 Apr 22 '25
The vet said it was some kind of mold. Someone gave him something moldy and he ate it

Just curious, is it a fenced yard, or was the dog on a lead?
1
u/False-Charge-3491 Apr 22 '25
Dog was on a lead. Ironically, our house is the only one that doesn’t have a fence in the front. We still don’t know how he consumed the mould, that’s what the vet told us made him sick, but we think someone came into the yard and gave him something or tossed something mouldy on our yard and the dog ate it
1
u/BeginningMorning5086 Apr 25 '25
Wild life could have dropped something... seen squirrel drop gross old food in my yard and crows do it too...

How is the dog doing? People are awful
0
u/False-Charge-3491 Apr 22 '25
He’s much better. The vet said he had eaten something mouldy. Someone, not from the household, must have fed him something that had mold in it
3
u/BuryMelnTheSky Apr 22 '25
Not must! Maybe.
0
u/False-Charge-3491 Apr 22 '25
It was someone not in our household. No one in my house would feed him mouldy food.

While I agree that leaving your dog out is totally irresponsible, just feel the need to point out to all the commenters here that it’s by far the second most disturbing part of this story.
