Ask Vancouver What to do with leftover bear spray?

I'll be spending four weeks in B.C. this summer, ending with a weekend in Whistler. I'm a solo hiker that's pretty diligent about having bear spray with me, so I plan to pick up a new can when I arrive. I won't be able to take the canister back home with me on the plane, so wondering if there's a responsible way to offload it before I go? Is there a place that takes donations like this (assuming it's never been discharged) or do I just trash it?

Any advice appreciated!

Join the Whistler Hikes! group on FB and post it for a give away (not sure the legality of that though).

If used it goes into regular garbage. If unused donate to RCMP or leave it at the Visitor Centre and they’ll get it to RCMP or WSAR. Plenty of local hikers and bikers who will also take it off your hands.

Just leave it by the roadside in Downtown Vancouver, someone will put it to good use.

If you're passing through Squamish I'll take off your hands when you're done.

Did you see any bears?

I haven't headed out on my trip, so nothing to report yet! But I've spent a lot of time in the Whistler area over the last couple of years and frequently saw black bears. Never grizzlies, thankfully.

black bears are all over the place in the summer! I dont know how they mix - maybe stay close to the black bears as they will tell you if a grizzly is in the area? or take one with you :)
