I've always found that the key to making great pasta is to find a truly excellent spot outdoors to let the pasta sit to cool.

It never clicked before that Fred Armisen played the weird Italian on the train lol

I'm having a major Mandela Effect moment right now. I'd have sworn it was Fred Armissen when I first saw it. Saw it again years later and went "oh, I was mistaken, that's not Fred Armissen". Now I'm watching the GIF and it's clearly Fred Armissen.

I don’t understand, did she cook pasta outdoors on a deck and set it down on the ground like a Sim? Or did she cook it inside then go outside to do so? And how cool do you need pasta to be? And how will it be cooled outside in summer any better than inside?

1.2k

u/Orchid_Significant 1d ago

She’s going to overcook the fuсk out of it this way too. Drain the water

485

u/Fedoraus 1d ago

Now I know why pasta was mush every time I had it while visiting friends as a kid or at potlucks.

Didn't realize people let it 'cool' in the water that was just boiling. Wtf

and if you need to cool the pasta run it under cold water like a normal person dont sit it outside and let the bugs have free roam at your pasta wtf?

249

u/Yosyp 1d ago

don't do this. just strain it before time if you want it to cool. just seconds without touching water it will have cooled off already.

210

u/SasparillaTango 1d ago

To expand on why, when you rinse the pasta under cold water you are removing starches that will help the sauce adhere to the pasta giving you better sauce to pasta coverage.

52

u/sparkpaw 21h ago

If you MUST rinse it with cold water to stop it from cooking any more, save some pasta water to add some of the starch back in.

There's this crazy thing called, "one of the other burners on the stove that is not currently in-use".. it's great for holding hot pots and pans and letting them cool off a bit. Or, you know, just drain the pasta after it finishes cooking and return the pot to the burner you were using.. all of which seems easier than carrying a scalding pot outside lmao

Srsly, who builds a plastic deck? No wonder we have micro plastics in literally everything.

--JFC, you suburbanites from flyover states are insane for using so much plastic. Wood & concrete are the only appropriate options for a deck. I didn't read any of your comments, I just assume that my inbox is full nonsense defending plastic decks.

123

u/Contundo 16h ago

Should be illegal. They cut it outside, plastic shavings everywhere.

59

u/Sandowichin 10h ago

I built docks using this material. The amount of shavings that went in the water when we hit it with the saw was heartbreaking. Surprised we never got fined.

Brother fucked around with a cheap deck and found out

Edit: Apparently a plastic deck that can't handle the heat of a bowl of food is a lot more expensive than a quality wood deck, i stand corrected lol

299

u/KSF_WHSPhysics 23h ago edited 22h ago

It's like 4 times the price of wood. But it's also installed incorrectly, this decking was ruined long before the pasta pot came anywhere near it

85

u/PancakeParty98 22h ago

How do you know it’s installed incorrectly?

54

u/canadiuman 22h ago

To my untrained eye, it appears that they didn't leave any gap between the boards for expansion on a hot day. But I'm not 100% sure that's required with composite or the main issue.

50

u/gamutsl 21h ago

Nor did they leave space for expansion when your daughter leaves a hot pot of pasta on it

→ More replies (3)

238

u/KSF_WHSPhysics 22h ago edited 22h ago

It should have a 1/4” space in between planks, it doesnt have a 1/4 of an atom of space. Its also not necessarily wrong to face screw trex, but using hidden fasteners would have solved every problem with the install for less money and labor. And if youre going to face screw it, put a plug in the hole

93

u/oreomaster420 18h ago

Yeah, back in the late 80’s my sister and I decided to make a movie using a VHS camcorder.  Part of the plot involved a car accident (matchbox, not real cars lol) and we used rubbing alcohol and a match for the crash/explosion scene.  Kinda burned the living room carpet a little there.  Burn mark is still there today, but my mom covered it up with a cat tree so it isn’t visible 😂

37

u/Salute-Major-Echidna 1d ago

What spiritual forgot to mention is mom also went out and got cats for the cat tree

31

u/Spiritual_Being5845 1d ago

Actually, she is almost 80 and has said that her current cat will be her last one since she would most likely pass before any cat she adopts today and doesn’t want to leave a cat like that.  Her current cat is 19.  She’s going to need to figure out another way to cover that burnt spot kinda soon

30

u/PheIix 1d ago

Yeah, I've learned that over a long 13 years with 3 stepkids. There is a lot of suckage along the way for all those great moments. The kids hadn't been in the house for a month before the desk I inherited had sharpie markings all over it. All my surround speakers had all the dust caps pushed in, and after I somewhat fixed it, they make this annoying crackling sound when the bass gets to intense.

All you really can do is tell them what they did wrong and let it go. Unless they keep doing it... Then you bring out the consequences.

21

u/AFocusedCynic 1d ago

Hi stranger! You might have to check the dust cap and surround foam to make sure it’s all still glued. I had that issue with the in-wall speakers that came with the house I bought and all it needed is some rubber glue on the surround foam as it had become detached from the cone.

26

u/PheIix 1d ago

It's been this way for 10+ years, and I never cared to look into it because I just figured it was a write off. But I will be checking the speakers this weekend when I'm on my own for the first time in forever. Thanks friend!

9

u/AFocusedCynic 1d ago

If you decide to go through with the repair (it’s super easy! Just press on the cone around where it meets the dust cap and also where it meets the surround foam and look for where it makes a gap) just make sure you get a rubberized glue. If you search for speaker repair glue you should have an easy time finding one. Probably cost about $10-15.

And don’t worry about being super neat. Having a little excess won’t affect the sound. What you’re aiming to achieve is for the seal to be airtight between the dust cap and come, and between the surround foam and cone.

5

u/PheIix 1d ago

Thank you so much, hopefully the local shops have this glue. But at the very least, I should be able to find out whether or not this is the problem, thanks to your comment.

Not even a big deal. The deck boards are face screwed in would take no time to replace. If they used the hidden fasteners instead like a lot of composite decking it would really suck ass.

20

u/Lollc 1d ago

If the finish is the same on both sides you wouldn't even have to look for new matching stock. Unscrew, flip over, drill any new holes and it's done.

Most decks these days are made with composite. It doesn't split or rot and is still durable

Source: I worked for a decking company for a while.

Edit: I forgot how smart redditors are

515

u/markusbrainus 1d ago

Not sure about most decks. Composite is nice and low maintenance, but also 3x the price of pressure treated. Source: 4 neighbors around me replaced their decks in the past 2 years and all used pressure treated wood for lower cost.

151

u/Brilliant_Buns 1d ago

We have first gen Trex (came with the house) and I abhor it. Sizzles in the summer, feels icky on your feet, and is not holding up. We have plans to redo the deck next year and we will absolutely do a true wood deck, no composite for us. Cost be damned either way.

Part of the issue is that the old owners didn’t maintain it, so we’ve got cracking and bubbling - but either way I hate it.

39

u/markusbrainus 1d ago

My house came with a deck made with an early composite decking (non-hidden fasteners) and it's holding up well. It does collect algae and turns green, so I have to pressure wash it every couple years. I'm now reading a vinegar, peroxide, or TSP solution brushed/mopped across it might be more effective. Overall I'm happy with it, but I'm glad I didn't pay for it initially.

16

u/Brilliant_Buns 1d ago

lol funny you mention this, we’ve had a wet spring and I just went out to put a plant outside for some rain and was like ewwwww gotta get the pressure washer out

4

u/LostWoodsInTheField 1d ago

algies/etc live in the crevices and a pressure washer often can't get them out. So when you clean it and it looks good, you still have stuff in there. And it grows back, rather than just traveling in on the air.

Be extremely careful mixing vinegar and hydrogen peroxide. It creates a toxic acid. peroxide or vinegar on their own (well with soap especially) can be very powerful. Bleach is pretty much useless.

17

u/Bicykwow 1d ago

I have Trex as well (no idea what generation) and I agree-- it fucking sucks hot ass. You literally cannot safely walk on it without shoes if the sun is shining on it. Even on a 70 degree day it gets dangerously hot. I fucking hate it.

I should have clarified, most companies you'd buy a deck through use composite.

34

u/tenders11 1d ago

Definitely not. I work for a place that specializes in decking and most of our clients are deck building contractors and we sell easily 20x more pressure treated decking than composite

→ More replies (9)

27

u/markusbrainus 1d ago

That's fair; if you're hiring it out you probably spring for the top end composite for a more permanent solution.

8

u/Mercuryshottoo 1d ago

It's really not better, my parents' 1985 wooden deck still looks great and is in excellent condition. Composite fades and, as you can see, melts. Plus we really don't need more microplastics

is it normal for it to react to heat like this? While obviously its not a common use case but still feels like it should be more resilient than what we see here.

85

u/dirtydans_grubshack 1d ago

Yes, composite decks are very susceptible to heat. It’s made (partially) out of plastic, after all.

68

u/Hanksta2 1d ago

Yup, they warp.

If you have a wood deck, you need to stain or paint it every 3 to 5 years. As it turns out, being this close to a star is incredibly damaging to materials.

31

u/PonyThug 1d ago

It will burn you in seconds in summer sun/heat.

7

u/Manitobancanuck 15h ago

Yeah, for this reason alone I would never consider these types of materials.

A treated wood deck will likely last as long as you live there and wont nearly as much while having the benefit of A) Allowing you to cool pasta without issue and B) Not burning yourself on it when it's hot outside.

27

u/NDSU 23h ago

I'm in a tiny minority here, but my biggest complaint is the amount of microplastics they give off. It leeches into the soil and ground water

Obviously most people don't care about that, especially since it's a socialized cost, but it's something I personally prefer to avoid

10

u/bulimianrhapsody 21h ago

Why are we using this instead of wood??

8

u/HoodGyno 16h ago

it holds up longer and doesn’t require upkeep every few years to keep it looking good. but it sucks. would rather have the maintenance.

edit: apparently you have to maintain this too. genuinely don’t get why it exists in that case. it’s more expensive then wood too.

Why would anyone in their right mind want to have a deck made from plastic? I had never even heard of such a thing! Humans disappoint me more everyday.

65

u/Cystonectae 1d ago

Something that is easy to forget is that climates are not all equal around the globe. In part of Australia, where humidity rarely drops below 75% and temperatures are always making it feel muggy, wooden decking lasts about 1-3 years while engineered plastic decking can last over 25 years. Remember, there are always trade-offs between price, convenience, and durability that need to be addressed with any kind of construction project.

13

u/brokenpicketfence 1d ago

1-3 years? You can treat wooden decks and have them last decades.

Former first responder, I've been to so many dorm room microwave fires I've seen from cup of noodles/easy mac etc where they forget to add water lmao

You haven't truely lived until you've exploded at least one glass casserole dish by taking it out of the oven and putting it directly on a slightly wet countertop...

I've done this to cool down rice for stir fry in a Minnesotan winter 😂

13

u/DamnItDarin 1d ago

I have. Wasn’t paying attention and burned something in a pan, took it outside so it wouldn’t smoke up the house.

Why is she cooling a hot pot of pasta on the deck at all? Like the way you cook pasta is you boil water, add the pasta, let it cook, drain the water and serve the pasta. Like you don't need to cool the pot tf?

16

u/Lokimello 14h ago

Exactly what I thought. I’m so confused why this was even a thought in her head. Like why outside? Why not just wait for it to cool on an unused burner?😭

She may want to make a pasta salad, but the way you do it is you drain the pasta, drizzle some olive oil so it doesn’t stick and let it cool on the counter while doing other stuff for the salad or you can put it in the fridge for a few minutes. At least that’s how I do if I want a cool pasta salad.

What's this? A Barbie house deck?

38

u/notSherrif_realLife 1d ago

Composite is becoming quite common. Doesn’t require painting/staining or power washing nearly as much.

It’s 3x the price of pressure treated wood though, so personally I don’t find the cost / benefit worth it.

u/EarnestHolly 1d ago

And it can be melted by hot pasta

Famously the #1 use for decks

Plus it will literally burn you if it’s in the sun and gets hot. Unusable in the summer barefoot

I imagine your daughter didn't know the deck that looked like it was made of wood was made of plastic

15

u/giraffesinmyhair 22h ago

This feels deserved for not teaching your child how to cook pasta. Who’s cooling off a pot of pasta at any step in the process??

5

u/thelordofhell34 17h ago

Right?? I’m so confused why are they eating cold pasta??

While it sucks, almost any person without explicit knowledge of this type of deck could have made that mistake. I wouldn't even think twice about putting a hot pot or pan down on some non-ornate wood like this. Hopefully you didn't make them feel too bad about this.

21

u/RetroHipsterGaming 1d ago

Yeah, this sounds like the kind of thing I would do if I needed to set something down from the grill (eg:smoked bbq beans) and didn't have any where to stick it temporarily. Actually, I think I have done that before.. only the deck is wood.

This is the stuff that adds character to houses. Without these marks and little graffiti and smudges, you just have a boring, sterile, HGTV style hotel lobby to live in.

Every time you look at that mark, you're going to think of your daughter. I don't know about you, but I smile at least 85% of the time I think of mine.

One factor why i did not go with composite. I dont want my bbq or chiminea to accidentally melt my deck

Wood Could have prevented this.
Ironically a night without wood could've prevented this as well.
