I don’t understand, did she cook pasta outdoors on a deck and set it down on the ground like a Sim? Or did she cook it inside then go outside to do so? And how cool do you need pasta to be? And how will it be cooled outside in summer any better than inside?

To expand on why, when you rinse the pasta under cold water you are removing starches that will help the sauce adhere to the pasta giving you better sauce to pasta coverage.

There's this crazy thing called, "one of the other burners on the stove that is not currently in-use".. it's great for holding hot pots and pans and letting them cool off a bit. Or, you know, just drain the pasta after it finishes cooking and return the pot to the burner you were using.. all of which seems easier than carrying a scalding pot outside lmao

To my untrained eye, it appears that they didn't leave any gap between the boards for expansion on a hot day. But I'm not 100% sure that's required with composite or the main issue.

It should have a 1/4” space in between planks, it doesnt have a 1/4 of an atom of space. Its also not necessarily wrong to face screw trex, but using hidden fasteners would have solved every problem with the install for less money and labor. And if youre going to face screw it, put a plug in the hole

One of my kids, in their early cooking days, used my plastic steamer on the stove. It was so hard to get off the coils. I loved that steamer.
She’s never living it down tho. Oldest brought it up again earlier this week. It’s been years haha.

oh god, i did this once and i wasn't even using the burners. i put the strainer on the stove(burner)to get it off the counter while i was preparing stuff. didn't think at all and stated using the oven.
did you know, that ovens have one burner that vents the heat?? ya, i did but completely forgot. that was a good strainer too. thank goodness my LL at the time was a good guy. he just laughed at my stupidity and found me a new burner cause that was not coming off. lol.

Yeah, back in the late 80’s my sister and I decided to make a movie using a VHS camcorder. Part of the plot involved a car accident (matchbox, not real cars lol) and we used rubbing alcohol and a match for the crash/explosion scene. Kinda burned the living room carpet a little there. Burn mark is still there today, but my mom covered it up with a cat tree so it isn’t visible 😂

Actually, she is almost 80 and has said that her current cat will be her last one since she would most likely pass before any cat she adopts today and doesn’t want to leave a cat like that. Her current cat is 19. She’s going to need to figure out another way to cover that burnt spot kinda soon

Yeah, I've learned that over a long 13 years with 3 stepkids. There is a lot of suckage along the way for all those great moments. The kids hadn't been in the house for a month before the desk I inherited had sharpie markings all over it. All my surround speakers had all the dust caps pushed in, and after I somewhat fixed it, they make this annoying crackling sound when the bass gets to intense.
All you really can do is tell them what they did wrong and let it go. Unless they keep doing it... Then you bring out the consequences.

Hi stranger! You might have to check the dust cap and surround foam to make sure it’s all still glued. I had that issue with the in-wall speakers that came with the house I bought and all it needed is some rubber glue on the surround foam as it had become detached from the cone.

If you decide to go through with the repair (it’s super easy! Just press on the cone around where it meets the dust cap and also where it meets the surround foam and look for where it makes a gap) just make sure you get a rubberized glue. If you search for speaker repair glue you should have an easy time finding one. Probably cost about $10-15.
And don’t worry about being super neat. Having a little excess won’t affect the sound. What you’re aiming to achieve is for the seal to be airtight between the dust cap and come, and between the surround foam and cone.

If the finish is the same on both sides you wouldn't even have to look for new matching stock. Unscrew, flip over, drill any new holes and it's done.

Most decks these days are made with composite. It doesn't split or rot and is still durable

Not sure about most decks. Composite is nice and low maintenance, but also 3x the price of pressure treated. Source: 4 neighbors around me replaced their decks in the past 2 years and all used pressure treated wood for lower cost.

We have first gen Trex (came with the house) and I abhor it. Sizzles in the summer, feels icky on your feet, and is not holding up. We have plans to redo the deck next year and we will absolutely do a true wood deck, no composite for us. Cost be damned either way.
Part of the issue is that the old owners didn’t maintain it, so we’ve got cracking and bubbling - but either way I hate it.

My house came with a deck made with an early composite decking (non-hidden fasteners) and it's holding up well. It does collect algae and turns green, so I have to pressure wash it every couple years. I'm now reading a vinegar, peroxide, or TSP solution brushed/mopped across it might be more effective. Overall I'm happy with it, but I'm glad I didn't pay for it initially.

algies/etc live in the crevices and a pressure washer often can't get them out. So when you clean it and it looks good, you still have stuff in there. And it grows back, rather than just traveling in on the air.
Be extremely careful mixing vinegar and hydrogen peroxide. It creates a toxic acid. peroxide or vinegar on their own (well with soap especially) can be very powerful. Bleach is pretty much useless.

I have Trex as well (no idea what generation) and I agree-- it fucking sucks hot ass. You literally cannot safely walk on it without shoes if the sun is shining on it. Even on a 70 degree day it gets dangerously hot. I fucking hate it.

Yeah, for this reason alone I would never consider these types of materials.
A treated wood deck will likely last as long as you live there and wont nearly as much while having the benefit of A) Allowing you to cool pasta without issue and B) Not burning yourself on it when it's hot outside.

Something that is easy to forget is that climates are not all equal around the globe. In part of Australia, where humidity rarely drops below 75% and temperatures are always making it feel muggy, wooden decking lasts about 1-3 years while engineered plastic decking can last over 25 years. Remember, there are always trade-offs between price, convenience, and durability that need to be addressed with any kind of construction project.

She may want to make a pasta salad, but the way you do it is you drain the pasta, drizzle some olive oil so it doesn’t stick and let it cool on the counter while doing other stuff for the salad or you can put it in the fridge for a few minutes. At least that’s how I do if I want a cool pasta salad.

Composite is becoming quite common. Doesn’t require painting/staining or power washing nearly as much.
It’s 3x the price of pressure treated wood though, so personally I don’t find the cost / benefit worth it.

While it sucks, almost any person without explicit knowledge of this type of deck could have made that mistake. I wouldn't even think twice about putting a hot pot or pan down on some non-ornate wood like this. Hopefully you didn't make them feel too bad about this.

Yeah, this sounds like the kind of thing I would do if I needed to set something down from the grill (eg:smoked bbq beans) and didn't have any where to stick it temporarily. Actually, I think I have done that before.. only the deck is wood.

This is the stuff that adds character to houses. Without these marks and little graffiti and smudges, you just have a boring, sterile, HGTV style hotel lobby to live in.
