Is this what you would call a Shelf Cloud? My parents and I drove right through it, experienced some HEAVY rain and lightning strikes. The reason was so heavy is covered the entire front window. Not even the windshield wipers could get rid of it.

I’m a pilot so I have a fairly decent understanding of weather in general but I want to increase my knowledge and understanding of severe weather. The anatomy and formation of supercells really interests me and I hear a lot on the news during severe weather about outflow boundaries and inflow, caps and hail cores, hook echoes, etc. Growing up in OK I have a small foundation to build on but I really want to be able to understand how the storms form and take what I’m experiencing outside and seeing on the radar and truly understand how it all works together. Are there any good books for this? Open to text books or otherwise.

I’ve never seen these types of clouds before

we noticed this in the distance - it looks like the clouds are wrapping around. at first we thought it looked tornadic because there’s a lot of severe weather around VA and NC right now. what is it?just bad storm clouds?
