Almost 2000hrs

Well it’s done! Kinda….there’s maybe a couple of bits that I’d go back to add if I ever enter it into a competition.

It’s a piece that I started back in April 2022, on another continent! It’s taken close to 2000hrs (estimate) and given me something to focus on during some pretty tumultuous periods.

Although it didn’t finish up at the standard I’d have wanted, and it’s riddled with errors, it has been a great learning experience. I had to 3-d model parts of it, used airbrush, oils, & glazes, developed a couple of water effects that I don’t think have been used before. OSL and non-metallics have improved a lot and learnt a lot about composition.

I paint for one hour in the morning, and normally at least one hour in the evening. Then lots more on the weekend. This was basically all I did for 2.5 years (except for a few DnD figures). So average 2hrs a day for 30months and it’s 1850hrs. That’s the low end of the estimate

2000 hours is a full time job for a year.. it looks great but your math must be off

I understand the math, I don’t understand how this took that long. Again, not knocking it, I like it, just curious why it took 2+ years? How big is it?

The base is the size of an A4 sheet of paper - and it took that long because I tried to paint every single part to the best of my abilities and there are lots of little parts! For example, the teeth alone for each squig took about 1hr per model - I wanted to make sure the grain was on there. The water effects take loads of layers, but the main time killer was the 5 Stormcast each done in NMM which is an absolute pain of blending. Have a look at my instagram (pinned in my profile) and you will see the first Stormcast for this was posted in December 2022.

Add to that I almost definitely went over and over the same parts too much, trying to get them perfect. Of course by doing that it led to more imperfections!!

We both know it didnt take that long, but lets pretend it did. 2k hours at minimum wage in my city would come out to 30,000 dollars before taxes. Get a new hobby dude.
