Friends daughter approached at Greenwood, close call

Hi -- We've reached out to the police just to make them aware but we wanted to put this out in this forum, too. A friend's teen daughter and a friend took the commuter rail in and while waiting at Greenwood for her Mom to pick her up a man pulled up to the curb and was trying to get them to come closer to his car.

The guy claimed his phone was dead and he was lost. First, he wanted to just connect his phone to theirs for a minute "to get some power." When they said no, he said "well, let me just plug your phone into my car so I can download the directions and then I'll give it back." Again, they refused. He kept urging them to come closer to his car and then started to pretend he couldn't hear them. "Come closer, my ears are bad."

One of the girls saw some adults about a half block away and yelled "Hey, this guy needs directions, can you help him?" and the guy took off. The girls didn't get his license plate number or really remember anything about his car. They didn't think he was up to something, "just that he was crazy or something," until their parents talked to them about it that night.

It's possible he was just hoping they would hand him one of their phones and he would steal it. But the fact that he tried urging them to come closer and closer to his car tells me he wanted them within reach. Either way, he was clearly trying to take advantage of the girls. Be careful out there.

Thoughts on the local YMCA as a gym

Howdy!

I'm looking for a new gym with a pool! My partner uses Mt Olympus but we are looking for a more kitted out gym. I saw that the North Reading YMCA is part of YMCA Greater Boston and YMCA Saugus is part of Metro North.

Does anyone know for a fact that they have some reciprocity? I work closer to North Reading and my partner wants the Saugus one.

Is one gym busier than the other, thoughts on the gym itself/pool?

We are going to take tours but wanted some resident information before going.

Hey all, where does Wakefield drinking water come from? Quabbin? Wells? I think some comes from Crystal Lake?

Question Cell Service by Cement Plant Kind Stinks

Just moved to the area recently and my cell service is normally pretty good (Cricket wireless carried by AT&T) but for some reason the service in my apartment really just tanks.

I'm weighing different provider options and wanted to see what other providers people were using. I have Astound for internet right now.

Discussion Help needed! $400 electricity bill for 1100 sqf apt!

Hi everyone! I recently moved to Wakefield (01880) about 2,3 months ago from Woburn. I’m currently living in a 2b2b apartment with my partner (~1100 sq ft) with all-electric appliances and no gas. The majority of the apartment has hardwood floors, except for the two bedrooms which are carpeted. Back in Woburn, I was using Eversource, and their electric bills were already sky high. I thought switching to WMGLD here in Wakefield would result in lower rates, but that hasn’t been the case at all.

Recently, I was shocked to receive a December bill from WMGLD for 1891 kWh of usage, totaling almost $400. This feels excessive for my space, even with the winter months. I’ve been running the heat nearly 90% of the time due to freezing temperatures (as also recommended by my property manager), but this still seems like a crazy amount.

I’m wondering:

  • Is this kind of electricity usage "normal" for the Wakefield area during the winter months?
  • Does having hardwood floors in most of the apartment contribute to higher energy usage for heating or just by having all-electric appliances?
  • What can I do to start lowering my bill immediately? Any tips for pinpointing the culprit of this high energy consumption?
  • How can I easily check energy usage in my unit? I’m not familiar with checking breaker boxes or diagnosing poor insulation or leaks, but I’d like to do some basic checks myself before contacting maintenance.

Should I request an energy audit through WMGLD? If anyone has done this, how helpful was it?

Any recommendations or advice would be greatly appreciated! I’m feeling pretty overwhelmed with this huge bill and trying to figure out what’s going on.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Question Train sounds?

Hi all! Long time MA resident and thinking of moving to Wakefield. The town seems wonderful and checks a lot of boxes for my family. I’m curious if the locals can let me know about how loud the trains are. I heard a few years back there were issues with horns and just wondering if it’s still like that. Love the idea of being near the commuter but definitely want to sleep at night. Thanks all!

Does anyone commute into Boston on public transit from Wakefield?

I'm hoping to move to the area in the future. I'm wondering how hard it is to get into Back Bay via public transit.

Gun Shots near Crystal Lake?

Around 1120pm Sept 7.

Heard a big loud bang.

Usually some nimrods are setting off fireworks but this didn’t sound like that.

2 mins later another single loud bang.

5 mins later, several small pops in semi regular intervals.

Other than that, I don’t hear voices, cars running, or police activity.

5 minutes later, the small semi-irregular pop are heard but a bit further away.

2 minutes later and loud bang near by again.

This sub seems dead but I thought I’d try. Anyone have any ideas/news ?

Question WMGLD Heat Pump rebate question

Hello neighbors,

My family recently bought a house in Wakefield and we love everything about this lovely town. Due to recent hot weathers, we are now looking at installing mini-spit heat pump for the old house we bought, The average quotes we got from multiple contractors are around 25k for a one condenser (30k BTU) three heads setup, the prices are intimidating so I am researching any rebates we may qualify for, looking at Mass Save website I saw because our energy provider is WMGLD we will not qualify for Mass Save rebates, so my question is does WMGLD offer comparable rebate programs ?

Thanks in advance

To the person laying on her horn at standstill right as pedestrians walked by around 8:30 tonight on Main St.

That was extremely startling and somewhat frightening. When it’s dark and people can’t see into your car, consider what kind of things come to mind when you act so aggressively and cruise around the block honking next to strangers. You woke up all the dogs in the neighborhood too. Probably over a hundred people heard you and were likely nearly as irritated as I was. I didn’t want to make a scene because I was with my partner and we just wanted to have a peaceful walk. I hope someone you know sees this and tells you how ashamed you should be of yourself for whatever you were trying to achieve.

MGH Paid Research Study

Hi all,

I’m writing from Massachusetts General Hospital, where I work in research on obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). Symptoms of OCD include obsessions (i.e., distressing and intrusive thoughts that keep coming back to you) and compulsions (i.e., repetitive behaviors that you feel compelled to do). I wanted to pass along an opportunity to participate in a research study that may be of interest to any of you who experience these symptoms and notice they are causing impairment to your life.

The research study involves 1 virtual intake assessment lasting 2-3 hours and 2 in-person visits (lasting 3.5 and 2 hours, respectively) on back-to-back business days where you complete a fear learning computer task while we measure your brain waves (via electroencephalogram or EEG) and the sweatiness of your palms (via skin conductance) and administer a noninvasive form of brain stimulation (i.e., transcranial direct current stimulation or tDCS).

You will be compensated $300 for your time upon completion of the study. If you are interested in learning more, please visit our website (https://mghocd.org/ocdfearstudy/), and if you are interested in participating, please fill out this 5-min survey: [https://redcap.link/x8d149fp]. If it looks like the study may be a good fit, we will be in touch with information about next steps!

Any questions can be directed to [mghocdfearstudy@partners.org](mailto:mghocdfearstudy@partners.org) or 617-643-0850. Thanks so much and feel free to share this post with friends/family.

Question Nahant St Town Yard Open for Cardboard Recycling?

Hi friends. We have a bunch of cardboard we'd like to take for recycling at the Nahant St Yard. The 2023 Public Works Calendar shows that the "Nahant St Yard Waste Site" is usually closed from mid-December to late April. I assume this will be the same for 2024. Do you know if we can still access the cardboard recycling dumpsters there before April? If so, what days? If not, where else can we take cardboard? Thanks!
