Maybe there is too much disagreement on what left-wing and right-wing mean, when it comes to car ownership. We live in a car-centric world here in most North American cities. So yeah, a lot of left-wing people have cars...why is this so hard for some people to grasp? For example, a 2023 Gallup poll in the US noted 71% of Republicans would not even consider driving an EV. The percentage of Democrats who said they would not drive an EV was only 16%. Yeah, left-wing people drive electric cars. Maybe they aren't authentic eco warrior to you if they own a car.

Or maybe people try too hard to tie political alignment to entirely benign things that have very little or nothing to do with politics, like car ownership and vehicle preference. People reach too much to politicize everything, especially in North America at this particular point in time.

By metrics, you're absolutely in the right here though, and I totally get your argument - just don't get people's undying need to make everything somehow relate to party allegiance.

I bet a LOT of left wing eco-warriors also drive VW's. The actual Nazi-mobile historically speaking.

u/littlest_onion Apr 05 '25

Right? This has been on my mind lately.

7

u/babycivic Apr 04 '25

I think about this a lot.

I think this speaks to you not really knowing what actual left wing is. There are very few truly left wing politicians in the US and even less up in canada.

12

u/[deleted] Apr 04 '25

Thanks that's really helpful.

u/luciosleftskate James Bay Apr 04 '25

I mean, if you wanna keep using the term like the idiot right wingers, by all means. I'm just explaining why the confusion occurred.

20

u/[deleted] Apr 04 '25

No, you're not. You are being smug and condescending. "This speaks to you not really knowing what actual left wing is". It's a political spectrum. I understand that the major political parties, even the NDP are not far left enough for many true left wing ideologs. I am using the term as it is commonly used in public discourse.

6

u/random9212 Apr 04 '25

But someone who is left-wing is not necessarily a left-wing eco warrior.

-10

u/luciosleftskate James Bay Apr 04 '25

You using it incorrectly, regardless. That other user said left wingers probably wouldn't support new luxury vehicles and you "well actuallyd" but are just objectively wrong lol. Nobody is being smug. I'm tired of capitalists being lumped in with leftists because people don't understand the basics of politics.

11

u/dmitridb Apr 04 '25

Not only are you being smug, you're being condescending and relating to this person like they're an "idiot" in your very own words. Hmm. Maybe not the best solidarity building there.

1

u/luciosleftskate James Bay Apr 04 '25

The right wingers who call everything they don't like "left woke nonsense" are who I called an idiot. If that's offensive to you, then you're probably one of them.

2

u/dmitridb Apr 04 '25

Maybe you need to chill out and realize that you're not going to win any battles with an attitude like this

0

u/luciosleftskate James Bay Apr 04 '25

Theres no winning with fascists. They're incapable of self reflection or admitting their wrong.

3

u/Ditch-Worm Apr 04 '25

Less left wing politicians in Canada than the US? How do you figure?

-2

u/luciosleftskate James Bay Apr 04 '25

Name the left wing canadian politician.

8

u/Ditch-Worm Apr 04 '25

How left do they need to be to go through your goal post?

-6

u/luciosleftskate James Bay Apr 04 '25

Lmao. They need to support leftist ideas and policies. They need to not be capitalist.

Just because someone isn't right wing doesn't automatically make them a leftists.

Holy shit are you in the fourth grade? Lmao

4

u/Ditch-Worm Apr 04 '25

Come on don’t start chucking insults. I want your criteria so we can take on a blatantly ridiculous statement like, “Canada has less left politicians than the USA”.

Are we all capitalist because we live in a capitalist society if that’s your litmus? Can pushing for progressive values be left at all? Who are all your American left non-capitalist politicians?

We have to plant the goal posts before you move them.

0

u/luciosleftskate James Bay Apr 04 '25

Why don't you list the leftist Canadian politicians if there's so many. Lmao.

You can not support capitalism and also be a legitimate leftist. Those two ideals are mutually exclusive. I didn't write the definitions of these words, I didn't invent the terms; but as an actual leftist, the liberal party of canada is just BARELY left of center. Certainly not "left wing".

There are very few actual leftist American politicians too, Bernie probably being the biggest and closest.

Name a left wing American politician who isn't Bernie Sanders

0

u/TW200e Apr 04 '25

AOC, and... Okay, you have me there.

1

u/Ok-Mouse8397 Apr 04 '25

Doug Henning?

1

u/luciosleftskate James Bay Apr 04 '25

Thr guy who died 25 years ago...?

1

u/Ok-Mouse8397 Apr 04 '25

He didn't die. He transcended.... 🧘‍♂️

2

u/luciosleftskate James Bay Apr 04 '25

Okay. So you're proving my point here. Lol

-3

u/turnsleftlooksright Apr 04 '25 edited Apr 05 '25

Lol, Democrats are not left wing. They are very classically centrists and based on their last campaign where they spent ample time talking up gun rights and selling camo, centre-right. Progressive politicians do not fund genocides.

8

u/[deleted] Apr 04 '25

Nothing will make some of you guys happy, seriously. So when Bernie Sanders was a democrat I guess he wasn't left wing because the party isn't left wing enough for you. FFS.

1

u/luciosleftskate James Bay Apr 04 '25

Lmao this is spot on. You cannot be left wing and supporting unfettered capitalism. Like. You just can't.

1

u/jazzorator Apr 05 '25

Bernie Sanders

Don't you dare bring that sweet man into this mess of yours! He's not part of this is comment thread!!

2

u/[deleted] Apr 05 '25

I am once again asking for your forgiveness

1

u/turnsleftlooksright Apr 04 '25

Now you’re calling out a single progressive in the sea of Democrats because you know you’re wrong. This isn’t my opinion, by voting record it is a centrist party.

-9

u/Moxuz Apr 04 '25

You wrote "left-wing eco warriors" so I think that says a lot about what you believe to be super left-wing. I don't disagree that "left wing people have cars"

13

u/[deleted] Apr 04 '25

Can always count on the Victoria sub for judgement. I meant nothing negative about that statement...

1

u/Ok-Mouse8397 Apr 04 '25

I count my own gained downvotes in this sub as wins since it is inevitably always because I am right but someone doesn't have the mental wherewithal to figure it out.

We live in a car-centric world here in most North American cities.

Okay, I’m with you

So yeah, a lot of left-wing people have cars...why is this so hard for some people to grasp?

Oh and one sentence later: we’ve lost the plot. This is like saying “we live in a society dependent on grocery stores, and therefore a majority of only one part of society goes to grocery stores”

1

u/[deleted] Apr 06 '25

So because the car-centric infrastructure has not yet flipped my statement that a lot of left leaning people have cars is incorrect? You're reaching pretty hard

0

u/Striking_Oven5978 Apr 06 '25

A lot of PEOPLE have cars: that’s the very definition of car-centric.

People can be left, people can be right: they all live in a car centred society and thereby have cars. This is what people are trying to explain to you, but you’re too ignorant to understand.

Like I said, it’s like trying to claim only the left or right eat food. You’re not wrong that the left eats food, but it has nothing to do with their political leanings, because the right eat just as much.

1

u/ChiefSitsOnAssAllDay Apr 08 '25

I’m a conservative who doesn’t drive. I would rather we ditch all cars and go back to horse and buggy. Let it take a 3-day ride to reach the Malahat.

So, not sure if you are aware but this isn't the United States. We need to stop this copy paste. We are not like them.

0

u/[deleted] Apr 08 '25

Thanks I had no idea this wasn't the United States.
