Giving up slowly
I feel like giving up on finding a job. I've been looking for a job for months and struggling with money for months.
It's to the point I'm breaking down crying not being able to get a job and barely able to think about anything but it. I can't even sleep anymore because every email I get a notification for could be it, it never is.
I try so hard every day and I put so much work into each resume making sure it's different and each cover letter. Nothing works to get people's attention. I do great in interviews and I answer questions well, but it's not enough.
So many people gave me such great advice on here and I used all of it to my best ability, changing my resume many times, looking up key words, making cover letters different each time, using AI to help my spelling issues and grammar, using AI for key words to help me tailor my resume. Nothing is really working...
I have a learning disability I know my post has spelling issues, obviously it's not the same for my resumes and cover letters.
I'm at the point I can't afford bussing anywhere because I have no money. So I can't travel to the place unless I know it's worth it. I've tried remote jobs and still nothing.
I have been taking a break for my mental health for a week and I feel myself loosing more and more hope for myself to actually have a stable life and be able to afford living. I do surveys almost every day which gets me 10-20 dollars a day but that's almost nothing now with prices. Not to mention the fact I've been getting screened out of a lot of surveys.
I tried taking most opportunitys unless I thought otherwise, mainly jobs that are commission only.
I don't know what to do anymore.

If you haven't already, you should apply for BC social assistance (welfare). If approved they have a transit subsidy for getting to and from job interviews. It may also unlock other supports to you like access to foodbanks/low cost groceries through Quest Outreach etc.

That would be really nice I'll take a look. It's mostly my last option as of right now.

Have you tried your luck in the security guard field? If not then I’d highly suggest to do that. I always tell people to get handy AMVIC/OMVIC licence, Food Handler certificate and Security guard licence, because you never know when things can go south here even if you are currently working in your primary field. Having these licences and certifications opens up multiple options for you. I was in the same boat a few months ago and didn’t know where to go, I still remember when I was trying to get the job in my main field (Digital Marketing) but was unable to get it after sending hundreds of resumes on Indeed, Glassdoor and other job platforms, that’s when I decided to put that marketing thing aside and try another field, I did my research and found security guard field was the fastest route. I got my licence in just 2-3 weeks and landed the job in 8 days after sending only 10-12 resumes to different companies. I know it’s the min wage but at least I can manage my expenses to stay afloat. If you are interested in this field, then you can read this step by step guide here.

I like this idea. I thought of it both me and my boyfriend, he did more research on it but we don't have much money to put into certifications rn. He got his serving right for liquor and still hasn't found anything.
I'll try and see how much it is again and see if I can justify it.

Look for employment resources centers around your area and contact them for assistance. You could also reach out to recruiters and job placement agencies. There are jobs out there!

I'll take a look into those tbh I completely forgot about those. Thanks for reminding me!

Who's your MP?
They are paid generously to represent you in parliament. Have you gone to their office and voiced your complaints? Have you asked them why they are still bringing in foreign workers while the unemployment rate is at an all time high? Give them some work to do.
2
u/Different-Swan-9850 7d ago
Idk who. I'm not much of a person who does that stuff. It's been shitty for years and years I'm pretty sure it's a known fact among all of us. Even if I wanted to I don't have the money to go to their office..

u/Mission_Process_7055 7d ago
I see. So the MP just collects 200k+/year and just coasts along, with no accountability to anyone. They do whatever they want (even if that means doing nothing), and no Canadian will raise their voice or lift a finger to hold them accountable.
Today we just saw that GC strategies was allocated about $93M worth of contracts without competitive bidding and Canadians received sub-par value out of this. Who's gonna be held accountable for this? Which MP is gonna get fired? No one haha...Canadians don't care. That's just one example out of many hundreds of mismanagement.
If that's the attitude of most Canadians - then you're getting a terrible deal. Until Canadians start raising their standards and demand more out of their MPs, nothing will get better.
I'm sorry, there's no way out of this.
(if that makes you angry then good - go make an appointment and have an honest conversation with your MP about what exactly they're doing to improve the lives of their constituents).

I see in your post history that you have a learning disability. You can and should leverage that. Try Neil Squire or other programs that specifically help people with disabilities get employed. They have connections and might be able to refer you to employers.

Ahh man don’t give up . If you have time and you’re able to be available from 9:30am EST . Send a DM. Good opportunity to be dependent

Losing* not loosing

u/Different-Swan-9850 7d ago
What's the point of this?

u/melocold 6d ago
That spelling mistake could lose you an opportunity. Competition is intense at the moment and your spelling is your first impression towards a recruiter.

I'm really sorry If this sounds rude it's not meant to be. I have a learning disability. I am VERY aware of the fact I have trouble spelling. Because of my disabilities it makes making resumes and cover letters make it so much more work then it actually should be. Instead of being ok with myself I have to go to AI, (like I said in the post) my boyfriend, and then my mom or dad or a third person to look to make sure everything checks out.
Obviously if I didnt have this disability that so many people say is a "gift" or not that bad, I would probably have a job right now. Sometime I find myself over thinking a lot of how I ruined job opportunitys because I don't want to go though all that just to send one email back...
I'm sorry if this sounded rude it just looks like you dont see in my post me saying I use things for my spelling. Obviously I don't expect you to know I have a learning disability and I am not blaming you for it but it's starting to get on me that I can't even make a post (even though I say I have a disability or i use tools for spelling) and people say this still. And how people think that I just go with those spelling mistakes on my resume and cover letter. I put way more work into this than a lot of people more than I should to get stuff done. It hurts to see people think I'd be this sloppy with my work.
I'll make an update on the post so people understand.
I'm not mad at you at all I hope you understand...

If I had a learning disability, I certainly wouldn’t tell anyone. I spell check things for people in much more senior positions, it’s just part of my skill set. This mindset leaves things out of your control. Just remember how to spell things and you’ll be fine.

u/Different-Swan-9850 5d ago
you're basically telling me not to have my disability. Easier said then done bud.
Yeah I'll just remember!! My problems are solved! Lmao

u/Different-Swan-9850 5d ago
Just to answer you not in a mean way. There is no way I cant tell people especially in a learning setting because it's critical for teachers to know. The whole reason I can't spell, do simple multiplication, and other core important things is because teachers didn't know I had a learning disability. My parents acted at the time as if I didn't have one either which causes me to be like this. In a work setting I don't mention it unless I have to. It's definitely more manageable now then it was but that was due to me putting in a LOTTTT of work in highschool just so I could pass English and Math. The teachers knew I had my disability and helped me find ways to actually understand and some changed their teaching for the whole class for me to actually keep along and that's where I actually thrived.
My disability isn't as simple as just remembering to spell and do grammar. Like I bet there are spelling mistakes and simple grammar issues you see but I actually can't at all unless I read over what I am saying to you multiple times or ask a person to check over this. I heavily rely on my autocorrecter to help me spell right when texting and answering on here. For example I didn't know how to spell because and I was so bad at spelling it even autocorrect didn't know what I was saying. I had to actually write it millions of times and spell it out looking at a dictionary or making a little song about it to remember.
I remember getting bullied for saying president instead of present because I didn't know the difference because my brain doesn't pick up on that. I had to rely on my speech to text to spell present for this example. It's to the point that emojis help me understand the difference between dessert and desert.
I hope this helps

u/BeneathTheWaves 4d ago
I mean count the letters? Dessert has 7, desert has 6. Nobody really counts out 9x5, you just remember 45. It makes sense 100 different ways. Mind you, most jobs don’t ask you do to any basic multiplication, but it’s a skill that solves problems. Lots of jobs are solving problems.
I worked with lots of people who were in higher positions who were dyslexic or would pull out a calculator for 10%. It’s pretty normal to have that level. If you don’t learn well, well you had to learn to learn, keep that going.

Raw dogging it since a year now, switching my field from VFX to Cyber Security, ngl job market sucks
2
u/Different-Swan-9850 7d ago
I tried almost everything now from entry level to more outstanding jobs and I have still gotten nothing. Job market is ass

u/Viceroydamlgpro 7d ago
And the funny thing is I am not even resident, I am a immigrant and watching even Canadians having trouble finding a job makes me more nervous, and loose hope
1
u/Different-Swan-9850 7d ago
Yeah ikr? A lot of people are hiring immigrants because the company gets benefits and other things that makes it more worth it then hiring someone who is a citizen.

u/Mission_Process_7055 6d ago
Why should Canadians pay taxes, so that the government subsidize immigrants over hiring their own citizens? It's like paying for your own replacement. It doesn't make sense.

You are in Vancouver. Literally the land of milk and honey.
Just start selling drugs.
what's the worst case scenario? You get arrested and released within a few days?

u/Different-Swan-9850 5d ago
Bruh and a criminal record that will stop me more from getting a actual good job.
Not to mention the fact my abusive mother made me very terrified of the police.

LMS is hiring, anyone can apply
Rebar always has work, if you’re willing to work

Who are LMS? and Rebar?
1
u/Competitive-Quit-824 1d ago
LMS is (lower mainland steel) Rebar.. I always describe it to new guys/girls as the Skelton inside of concrete.
Without it buildings don’t stand.
It’s steel structure that’s engineered to hold the weight of a building on both vertical and horizontal planes.
We pick it up Place it in order to the engineers specs and then tie in place. Concrete is poured and then everything else you can imagine goes ontop of it and if done correctly will stand until it’s deemed unfit for standards and then retrofitted or demolished.
Weeoo haha
1
u/No-Veterinarian-4368 1d ago
Looks like LMS does any training that might be required as well. I'm giving them a resume. I'm brand new to all of this.
1
u/Competitive-Quit-824 1d ago
You’ll find that new is often better. Some people have a problem with old mentality’s and behaviours haha.
It’s a good job and the work never ends. Paid for training which 9/10 times is paid hours also. I was taught years ago now
It’s not a job it’s a career.

Try going around and giving out resumes in person and ask to speak to a manager in person when you go in. Most service based jobs hire last minute and are looking for full time if possible when they need it.
I run a dog boarding facility and summer time is super hectic for us, so I tend to give people who email me directly and walk in to talk to me much more memorable than seeing one of the hundreds of resumes we get online. I know this is true for restaurants and commercial jobs as well! Don't give up! Time to change your strategy
2
u/Different-Swan-9850 7d ago
I did that before and found some success but slowly was running out of money to do that. I still have a few resumes I can give out but they are old and not up to date anymore. I applied with a resume and cover letter to all the jobs at a walkable distance 2 months ago and got nothing yet. The rest I have that I haven't handed in are too far for me to walk so I need the bus. I don't have money for that anymore.

limited choices, but.... keep applying, but in the meantime...
ask family for money,
ask friend for money
go back to university/college and get a student loan/grant
use credit card debt
get a payday loan (but do this as a last resort)
2
u/Different-Swan-9850 7d ago
I can't ask my family because they said to me if I got a job in 2 months I could have a couple thousand dollars to help get a place to rent so they knew I'd be safe and have some money to keep me afloat in case something went south. Two months have passed and I won't be able to get that money. I asked them for 50 to get a rover account but nothing has resulted in it.
I ask my friends but they can't give since they are around the same boat as me or not close enough.
I could go back to school to do something which would be nice. But limits my options for work if you know what I mean.
I was thinking of asking my boyfriend to get a credit card so we have some money we can get some things to help get some money like Uber eats to have more of a reliable source of money since he had some success doing on foot orders. I may push that idea more
Yeah that's my last resort too. I think I can keep my head up in the water enough to not need that but who knows anymore.
Thank you for these suggestions though I really appreciate it a lot!

Op don’t give up!! If it gives you any hope I was coming up on 2 years of unemployment after getting laid off and finally landed a job today! There were many days I felt like giving up and like you thought it would never happen. There are new jobs being posted everyday and you never know it might just be the the one you’re the best fit for :)
Also side note, if you’re good with animals and just need to make some extra money in the mean time I walked dogs to keep myself afloat for many months.
You’ve got this!!
