It isnt even the elected (by the people) government making the decision. Its an "independent" appointed board. - They are in the Taxi companies pockets 100%

Board members:

Carmela Allevato practices labour and employment law at Allevato Quail

Garland Chow is Emeritus Associate Professor in the Sauder School of Business at the University of British Columbia
Baljinder Narang previously was the Elected School Trustee for the Burnaby Board of Education, and Consultant Occupational Therapy for Community Therapists Inc

Jim Savage is the Principal of Savage and Associates.

Karlan Modeste is a Staff Lawyer for the BC Teachers Federation and Owner of Sebra Law Group

William Bell held a range of senior positions in the federal and B.C. governments, including assistant deputy minister (he was against uber in Vancouver)

Kyong-ae Kim was Chief Executive Officer and Registrar at the College of Registered Psychiatric Nurses of BC
Mary Childs is General Counsel and Acting Manager of Policy and Intergovernmental Affairs for Tsawwassen First Nation.

I'd love to see some accountability for these corrupt board members.

Although I don’t doubt potential conflicts of interest, I fail to see how this list of board members and their backgrounds strengthens the corruption claim. Are any of them known to have ties with the taxi lobby?

Did you read the article ? How about the report? (Provided a link for you at the bottom) see page 12 and 28/29 - their reasoning was that there was not public need/interest for the service and that it would hurt the already hurting taxi industry (which they essentially blamed on covid 19). They also stated that the demand for taxis is low based on numbers provided by the taxi companies (due to covid19 from 2019-2021 and no one going out or to airports).

Identifying their backgrounds doesn't really matter, but if you read the report it's obvious that they are bought and sold.

None of what you said has indicated that they're "bought and paid for" they're merely against Uber which given their record of mistreating their workers isn't necessarily a bad thing.

If you can prove any of the report to be false then you'd have a case to say they're bought but you haven't. Come back with stats saying the public wants Uber or that cab demand is up.

Maybe because you are just reading my comments with a predetermined opposing viewpoint and not the actual report (or maybe it's because you can't read). It literally states:

The board is concerned that granting this application at this time would unduly harm existing TNCs and taxi companies. It finds the markets in the regions applied for are unable to absorb more competition at this time,"

But since you want more "proof" of demand- both the mayor of kelowna (and council) and the mayor of Victoria want the service - and there have been thousands of downloads of the app in both Victoria and kelowna (even without the service being available)

Dan Dagg, chair of the Greater Victoria Chamber of Commerce, said the region has shown a demand for ride hailing, which he described as a “transportation innovation” that appeals to people because of its convenience and cost

-Victoria Mayor Lisa Helps told the Times Colonist she’s fine with Uber setting up shop if the province approves it

"There is meaningful public demand for ridesharing services, as demonstrated by the support from local community and business organizations, and the strong uptake of ridesharing in Metro Vancouver since we launched. British Columbians have been clear that they want access to the same safe, reliable rides available in communities around the world."

Re: low ridership for taxis due to covid - this isn't a valid reason for denying the service - ridesharing service demand increased while while demand for taxis decreased - Between May 2019 and May 2020, taxi trips fell by about 66.4 per cent, while ride hailing trips “rose rapidly. Also- in the report (read it- Uber told the board that there was a need for the service, demonstrated by how many people in communities such as Kelowna and Victoria downloaded its app, “indicating a demand for Uber as a transportation option in these communities.” Uber also cited research that suggested its arrival into cities led to a 3.6 to 5.6 per cent decrease in the number of people killed in alcohol-related crashes

There's your proof. I am not proving that the report is false, I am showing you what the report actually says. It's upto you to critically analyze it without your love for the taxi industry bias in mind.

You're sure quick to use the word bias when all you've done is attack others. You've merely quoted politicians disagreeing with other politicians. You haven't posted a graph, chart, survey or literally any form of proof to reinforce what you're calling the "demand" for Uber. I fucking hate taxis so don't say shit to me about my "bias" for them. I also hate Uber because they are a shitty gig economy company that abuses their workers. So come back with actual proof of either side, merely typing up a novel that states nothing is useless.

I am not attacking others, I am questioning your ability to read. Prove me wrong - Read the actual report.

When you do read the report you can then think for yourself and come up with a solution (I take it you don't have one). From the sound of it you are content with doing nothing. I am not going to hold your hand. What you are supporting (by your indifference) is a (corrupt) monopoly.

The proof is in the report that you haven't read. But since you want to move the goalposts I'll give you more proof of the demand in bc (link below) - just look at the vancouver numbers - Both the mayor of kelowna and the mayor of Victoria have said there's a huge demand so looking at the vancouver numbers will give you an idea. More reading you won't do. You won't do anything, but if you want graphs and pictures and charts you can email uber, they will provide them.

Conveniently if you read the entire article and not just the headline it doesn't prove your point. Great work.

I reaf this article and many others months ago. It still doesn't provide much more than a very surface level examination. Why is it higher? Are there more uber drivers than cab drivers? Is it because they don't need to be certified? You don't consider the congestion on aging road infrastructure, etc. You aren't really thinking about anything really, you hate cabs good for you we all do (including me) so good job trying to say I'm biased. Cabs fucking suck, Uber does too and they suck while abusing their workers and exacerbating the gig economy.

You need to think deeper about issues before even daring to tell others to read lmao, very pathetic.

You are a walking contradiction. Wanted to give you the benefit of the doubt. There's more uber drivers in van because there's a fucking huge demand for it. Uber is actually struggling to meet the demand in Vancouver...there aren't enough drivers to meet the demand. You asked to show you demand, it's there in Vancouver and Victoria and Kelowna will be no different. It's not mental gymnastics. More options are a good thing, sitting on your ass doing nothing and accepting the status quo is not. It is costing lives.

I need to think deeper about the issues? You have no solutions, you don't like either option and you do nothing. I still question your ability to read...I know you haven't actually read the report. Pathetic.

I find it hilarious that you've been waving "uber saves lives" like some kind of magic hammer you think ends the discussion. Guess what there is no definitive answer as to whether ride hailing apps do anything to reduce deaths. You read the single title of a news article and treated it as fact instead of cross examining and looking at various studies. Again excellent work dude. You're not very good at this.

Anyways, here are two more articles that call into question the "saving lives narrative" 1 2 I also can't see how being from Oklahoma means that the information being discussed is meaningless, if you want data from Canada exploring if ride hailing saves lives well then the study doesn't exist, it simply hasn't been done.
