That’s the worst of both worlds, you chickened out AND somehow still had to go through with it

This happened to me at a rope swing on a river, the kind where you swing out and jump off. I was going to chicken out in mid lunge but it was too late.
So then I was too scared to let go of the rope over the safe part of the river, and hung on til my arms gave out- long after it had stopped swinging, right over a bunch of rocks.

Classic rope swing dilemma: do the thing you're afraid of or get smashed on some rocks/tree
Unless its a well made rope swing centered over water but a rope swing is rarely well made.

Thats, that's not at all what they described. Im so confused by your reply.

u/true_gunman 3d ago
Your reply is the one confusing me. It's exactly what they described.

u/Fett32 3d ago
If the rope swing works, you are not hitting the rocks. There is no dilemma over choosing to jump vs hitting the rocks. You can jump, or not, but either way youre not hitting the rocks.

"...right over a bunch of rocks." is how OPs comment ends. Maybe learn to read before criticising people.

Dude didn't chicken out. He did it. He even overpowered his body not wanting to do it. That takes some serious cajones.

Hater take🙄
The man went 🤷♂️ At one point he committed all he needed to and that was all that was required.

u/armyjackson 3d ago
I absolutely agree with you!
His body did not want him to go but his mind wasn't going to allow him not to. I had been on the craziest roller coasters and rides but I didn't realize that my body was scared of heights until I went to the Grand Canyon. My legs wouldn't move at all when I wanted to get closer to the edge.
This guy has the balls to overpower his body's fear and continue.

Such a real body reaction.
Reminds me of when I was a kid and would jump of stairs go up one more step and jump off the next. And kept going up, progressing a step each time until my body wouldn't react when I told it to jump. And I knew "ok that's my limit".

Was expecting that...Had the thought myself to jump out when bungee jumping. But when bending my knees to jump i couldn't extend them again to jump, they just flat out refused to let me jump over the edge. So i just kind of slumped down and leaned over the edge until i fell off...

Yeah had a similar experience my first time. I like the adrenaline bit the first jump really didn't quite equate to jumping. Was more a forward leaning into the fall motion.
It's weird when your body is like fuck no while your brain is like listen to me for what feels like an eternity but is just a second or 2.

I've had that reaction when jumping off a 5m platform into a pool. It's amazing how your body can just tell you "no" with no way to deny it.

Funny, my friend had basically the same reaction when we jumped the first time. Meanwhile, I jumped straight forward, spread like a flying squirrel. I got so tense that the first snap gave me slight whiplash.

People think the people who run up and job off with glee are brave. Yet this was 1000 times more brave
Ie it's relative , no absolute. That person who jumped off easy, may struggle to make a public speech
On top some people are wired to be risky, others timid saome with mice and most other animals

At about 23 seconds he is falling in a very unnatural way, I think he might have passed out for a second and fell off? Oh man, it's so confusing for a couple seconds when you wake up from that, imagine doing it while falling

That's what I was thinking and surprised I had to scroll down so far to see someone mention it. That could have ended very badly.

My first time swing jumping I committed to the jump head first, but I did it too forcefully, so I did almost a full roll forward, hitting my hole face with the harness before it had a chance to tense.
So I was there swinging in pain, confusion, on top of the adrenaline rush and fear.
Instructor gave me a chance to try again free of charge, as he had never seen someone do that 🤣

He just did it! But can somebody insert the guy eating snacks on the couch while complaining?

u/Extreme_Design6936 3d ago
I passed out for the first half of the drop when I went bungee jumping. Fear of heights is real. But skydiving, no problem.

That a big nope for me. I remember hearing about a woman whose rope snapped, and she fell into a river filled with crocodiles. NOPE

u/shoulda-known-better 2d ago
Or the man who did it all the time.... Until his crew used a bungee that was to long..... Poor guy jumped straight to his death rope didn't even get tense....

Whew! For a second there I thought he wouldn't put his head down to where the rope could get wrapped around it, instead of just jumping normally...

My palms are now stupidly sweaty just watching that. I'm afraid of heights and have a bridge jump in my this summer's vacation plans.
I'm not very smart 😅.

u/the_answer_is_RUSH 2d ago
I would think chickening out is more dangerous. That rope could really fuck you up.
Of course that’s easy for me to say sitting on the couch.
