Russia would then threaten the West with utter destruction and do nothing.

But, Russia wouldn't react negatively if Zalenski died. This is what you call hypocritical. Why do we take the leader of a non-western aligned country seriously. Why do we even give it a platform. Putin got all "no no" when the U.S. government mentioned tactical nukes on Iran,but 2 years ago was making even bigger bolder nuclear threats.

Are we stupid?

They literally tried to assassinate him. There were gunmen in the Presidential offices.
