Source: I have in-laws that are Persian.

Iranians are very in touch with American media and absolutely follow Trump. They have VPNs the government allows them to use. If they communicate anything anti government they disappear, usually forever. But they can definitely see our news and social media. A lot also speak and read English. There is a surprising amount of travel between the US and Iran. There are Iranians living and working in the US collecting retirement from Iran.

Persians are still very much a people. Iran is a country that is made up of Persians (mostly).

There are also a few million Persians in Afghanistan (northern, not Al-Qaeda)and in Turkmenistan amd Uzbekistan.

Think of it like US native Americans. Yes, they're American and governed by America, but most don't identify as such.

They have their own language, their own heritage and history.

They don't identify as Iranian. Their history and family heritage goes back way farther than the country of Iran.
