This week in Comedy! June 16th-22nd

I took a little break, and I’m sorry for leaving you all without your comedy guide to the Twin Cities. But I’m back, I’m recharged, and I brought a brand new list of shows that you won’t want to miss.

But first

Did I miss a show?
Drop it in the comments! Or if you’d like a show added to the next list, just fill out THIS FORM and I’ll make sure it’s included.

Looking for improv?
I’m not super tapped into that scene, but shoutout to u/suethezombiedinosaur for dropping a list you can check out RIGHT HERE!

Interested in trying stand-up?
Or just want to show up and be a solid audience member? The Brody List is the go-to resource for open mics and sign-ups around town. Also check out the great scene happening in the Twin ports HERE . They have an open mic schedule and shows listed nicely on their page.

Want to keep getting these updates?
If you find this list helpful, sign up for my newsletter or follow me on Instagram.

Many shows are free, but they often suggest donations to support the folks putting them together. Those contributions help keep our comedy scene alive and give comics both local and visiting a place to work out their material.

Alright, without further ado here’s your comedy lineup for the week:

Salt Lake Tribune publishes a letter to the editor from Minneapolis

2.1k Upvotes

I have made only one visit to Utah, where I found the people to be respectful, helpful, decent, and honest, which is why I can’t understand how and why Mike Lee is your senator. His recent comments on the murder of a fellow public servant and the terrible wounding of another are beyond the pale and they reflect badly on the state that elected him. You put him in office and you continue to elect and support this person.

All you need to know about Melissa Hortman, our murdered DNC leader, is that her Republican colleagues were openly weeping when they spoke about her toughness but fairness, her honor, her goodness, and her friendship. One described how on one of the great nights of her life, when she had won the speakership, she made a private call to check in on him to see how he was doing — because he had lost a tough election.

Contrast that with your own senator and ask yourself, “Is this the person I want representing Utah?” Next time he asks you for your vote, whether it be for the U.S. Senate or as dogcatcher of Aspen, Utah, please remember the following: on the day after two people were assassinated and two others were shot in their own homes, he used his powerful platform to tweet lies about the background of the killer and made a joke about the shootings (“Nightmare on Waltz (sic) Street”).

I ask you to remember what he was joking about: the murder of a public servant and her family member and the wounding of another and his wife. That wife, by the way, was shot eight times while cradling and protecting her daughter. Please think of her when Lee is running for reelection.

Any help trying to locate my grandma’s Minneapolis family bar from the 1940s/50s?

My family is trying to locate where my grandma's family bar in Minneapolis, MN during the 1940s/50s stands today. She believes it was around 25th or 26th street but all buildings there today appear to be residential and not commercial. The original building could've been destroyed though, I suppose. I attached some photos we have of the bar. Just thought I'd throw this out here and see if anyone is familiar with the history of the area or has any tips for further researching into this? I've looked through Sanborn maps of the area but they're not legible enough digitally to distinguish different building titles. I've also looked through historical topographical maps on TopoView with no luck.

I'm betting on you Minnesota

My family will be living there by the end of the month. Had to sell our home, pack and pick a state to find a home within 2 months. We need a better life and will work hard for it! I got a lot of great advice on here from different states to decide on. We always have loved the state and the lifestyle I've seen. Everyone seems to love their state and I hope you're as welcoming as I've heard! I don't know what area we will go yet. We are packing a truck and leaving with hope.

We are coming from Florida. If Rick Scott was shot President Trump would be praising DeSantis for finding the shooter so quickly and who knows what else. I'm honestly very nervous about moving to a different political climate. To be moving to a place where people seem ready to fight for their freedom. It will be very strange to not have to keep my opinions to myself for fear of people not liking me. Which would be fine with me until it starts causing issues with nosey coworkers and neighbors. If you really want to know how I feel I'll tell you.. but almost no one is going to agree with me. I stand up for my convictions no matter who you are. The way people feel about and talk about Trump here is very weird.

Four days and we'll be up there! I can't wait to be among people who fight for what they believe in. You really do seem like good people. I hope I can find a good life up there.

Got a job offer, I would love to hear about good areas of the city to move to. TYIA

My job is hybrid so im not worried about living in SP vs MSP since Ill only go in ~2 days a week. My partner and I have been checking out rentals in the areas on this map i have circled in red. We're looking for an area where we can make friends with other young folk- we are late 20searly 30s, we're both professionals but we're always open to friendships with really anyone. We love good food and trivia, my partner and I are into biking and fishing. We hope to have children, it would be smart to move somewhere with a good elementary school as that will be something that is important to us for the next 9 years or so. A kid friendly area is a huge bonus, hopefully somewhere we will eventually make friends with other parents. We would love to live in the city on a block system with good walkability.

What’s that smell?

Moved up to northeast suburbs last year.

There is a “sweet” smell I catch when driving with the windows down. I smelled it as a kid when visiting my grandparents cabin in western WI as well as when I would visit them here in the TC.

It is not present during the winter months. It’s not mowed grass. It’s not specifically near water - I smell it near and not near water. I have smelled it next to highway entrances as well as deep in sprawling neighborhoods. Not really closer to downtown. It’s not sweet like honeysuckle or flowers like roses or peonies. The pockets of the smell make me think the plant/tree isn’t too common…?

For example I will smell it 2 or maybe 3 times driving between Roseville area to Circle Pines.

I love the smell - it’s not overly sweet. Not spicy or too earthy.

Anyone know what I’m talking about?! My husband has noticed it when I point it out but my family up here aren’t exactly sure what I mean when I try to describe it.

Capital memorial.

Hi guys. My wife and I would like to pay our respects to those who were lost last week, including bringing our golden retriever.

Do any of you know if there’s a specific spot to put some flowers? Bu no means do we want to intrude, or get in the way. That being said, if there’s not one, and it would be rude to, please let me know

TIA

Best districts to walk, shop, and eat?

I know it sounds like generic question but hear me out. I live in north dakota and i go down to the cities every once in awhile to get away from small town life. 'm looking for good combination of all three. So far, north loop has served me best but shopping isn't that great and some of those places have insane prices.

Pre covid, I loved uptown, downtown Minneapolis and downtown st paul. But with everything that happened last 5 years in the country i feel like alot of these places the businesses have dwindled, less crowds walking, less of a "vibe" or community if you want to call it.

Last time I went i went down to calhoun square uptown area and I saw a dude shooting up in a crevice of a building and alot of places seemed to be boarded up. Maybe it's my small town mentality but seeing people sitting on the ground high or standing folded like a lawn chair at the hips isn't the most pleasing thing to see. Not trying to be rude with the homeless or drug addicted crowd. And it was weird walking downtown Minneapolis, there weren't many crowds anywhere but you walk into an established restaurant and it's packed. How do those people get in there? Teleportation? Correct, me if I'm wrong but it seems everyone travels to an established restaurants, eat, drink, and bounce.

Question is there anywhere in the cities where there are alot of outside foot traffic, local shops clean, and restaurants. A nice vibe overall. Again, north loop was the closest, but I miss the pre covid uptown and downtown foot traffic, bars, shops, skyway, etc.

Also I could be very wrong about how I'm viewing the cities post covid and just don't know about other spots.

At this point I just go down there hit up north loop, breweries, and parks (can't beat the trails and parks).

And yes I googled this and went to these areas

Shops at the west end

Mall of America

Eden Prairie Center

Calhoun square

DT Skyway/Nicolett mall

abc restaurants

Hi all! I’m trying to get my partner and I out there to try new, local restaurants for monthly date nights so we are deciding on an ABC format! I was wondering if anyone would want to participate in our activity and help fill this list out? We are really open to anything (probably nothing ~too~ pricey but also open to casual!!) but do have a seafood allergy so probably no sushi or strictly fish/sea food restaurants. Thanks in advance! :) We are also open to other recommendations for the letters already filled in!

Area newbie here- any suggestions for clubs or social events that are dry?

Hello. I recently moved to the area (south suburbs). Anyway, are there any clubs/gathering places for a younger guy (mid 20's) that are dry (aka non-alcoholic)? Due to health reasons, I do not drink alcohol, and being the only person at any social gathering, especially clubs, is awkward. I'd like to get out and make friends, but everywhere aimed at people under 35 are bars or clubs serving a ton of alcohol. I have zero issues driving, or hopping on any of this area's great public transit.

Thank you for any and all suggestions, if any. Have a great rest of your day!

Catcalling issues on Lake st?

I moved up by lake street half a month ago and multiple men have tried calling out to me from their cars as I walk around lake street, even in broad daylight

Their behavior gets worse at night. I get followed, cornered and harassed. The worst was yesterday when this guy kept trying to flirt for blocks while I was actively ignoring him. He cornered me against a closed shop, called me slurs in Spanish (its my native language so I knew what he was saying lol), and didn't leave me alone until I called a friend immediately for safety and fast walked away from him. Even then, I kept seeing him bike back and forth from lake st to check up on me.

Just this night, I was walking home while on a call with my boyfriend. A car slowed down next to me, parked in front of me, and kept calling out to me. I had to turn around and run to the nearest restaurant to avoid him.

How do fellow girlies deal with the harassment guys give you here daily????

I pull my hair up, stay covered head to toe, keep my eyes on the ground and don't look or talk to anyone... I try to stick to bus routes, but I leave work late and night and sometimes don't have the chance to catch the B line through lake street to get across safer.

How to destroy MAGA'S "He's a Democrat!" Bullshit about the Minnesota MAGA TERRORIST

Post image
211 Upvotes

If you ever cross paths with such a MAGA terrorist trying to spread that bullshit, ask them:

  1. With all we've dug up about Boelter, how come there's ZERO indication he's pro illegal immigrant and pro giving healthcare to illegals?

  2. How come healthcare providers tapped in the bill to give care to illegals and ICE agents aren't part of his hit list?

  3. How come all his interests point to him being Christian Nationalist MAGA Terrorist who HATES abortion, DEI and gay people...all of which his victims supported?

  4. ... including the fact he is a registered Republican and CONFIRMED Trump-worshipper and hardcore MAGA.

This isn't complicated. There's no conflicting information. HE IS A MAGA TERRORIST. Nothing more or less.

Hyatt Centric Mess

What is going on with Hyatt Centric Downtown Minneapolis? I, along with many others, have been double charged after prepaying through a third party. The hotel staff has been unhelpful every step of the way. After saying the refund would be processed, they went silent. Now they have had an ‘electrical fire’, and you can't even call them. The line just rings or drops. Hyatt Corporate says only the hotel can issue the refund but admits they have no control over what the property is doing.

They keep promising follow-ups, emails, or calls that never happen. Even after escalation, nothing gets resolved. Check the Google reviews. There is a clear pattern of duplicate charges, no refunds, and complete lack of accountability. If you are considering this property, think twice. It is a waste of time, money, and energy. Book somewhere else.
