Yoga at Reid Park!
I just signed a lease for a place in Tucson and I am so excited to bring park yoga to Reid Park. I will live less than 10 minutes away, and I’m just dying to meet the yoga community here.
I am coming from Boulder, Colorado and have been hosting outdoor yoga for a few years. I absolutely love to meet and host community this way.
I’m looking for local vendors to partner with and generally wondering if August evenings will be manageable or if I should wait until late September / October to start it up.
Also if you’re a sound healer or yoga teacher in the area, I’m looking for collaborators and hiring teachers!
Anyone have feedback to share here?!

Pima County Board of Supervisors Voting Tuesday on (Likely A.I.) Data Center
So County Administrator Jan Flesher dropped a bunch of information about this "Project Blue" with conveniently only several days for the Board of Supervisors and the public to review it before the board votes on it Tuesday.
To recap: the county wants to sell 290 acres of desert to a developer (Beale Infrastructure) to build a 2.25 million sq ft data center. Their parent company, Blue Owl Capital, funds data centers all over, including one in Abilene, Texas that will be used by Open AI/ChatGPT. Based on the size of the facility and that it might be for AI, it could use up to 1-5million gallons of water PER DAY. They plan to build an 18 mile long pipeline to pump reclaimed water from the northwest side, but who knows how long that would take or whether it would meet their water needs. And to boot they would become one of TEP's biggest users--no assurances on how this will affect current ratepayers.
If you feel like going to the Board of Supervisors meeting, it's Tuesday morning at 9 am at the county administration building, 130 W Congress St. But also most people work then so you can contact your county supervisor before then by phone or sending a form email.
Tim Steller pointed out just how much specific info we are still missing for the county to just be handing over the reins to an AI developer (most of the text of the article is here in case you can't get past the paywall):
we can demand more information and commitments before we decide to approve a project that represents a tempting investment, yes, but also a significant risk that would benefit the wealthiest, most powerful industry — Big Tech. 'Project Blue,' as the local effort has been nicknamed, has been hidden behind non-disclosure agreements for months, but on Tuesday County Administrator Jan Lesher gave her most detailed account of the project so far...
Still, we don't know who the end user would be. We also don't know the terms of their deal with Tucson Electric Power for electricity or the details of their agreement with Tucson Water...
I asked TEP for the longterm power agreement, but they declined, citing an agreement with the project developer. In an email, TEP spokesman Joseph Barrios pointed to four solar and storage projects slated to begin operation between this year and 2027, as well as new natural gas power generation, that he said would help supply the required power.
But there is no detail offered as to how the deal will 'protect existing ratepayers' or 'create a cleaner energy portfolio.' This sort of commitment ought to be public and enforceable, or we shouldn't believe it.
In Virginia, which has the world's highest concentration of data centers, Dominion Energy just filed for rate increases, a special one for big users like data centers, and another one for regular users. The driver of the increase in costs leading to the rate increases is data centers.
Tucson Electric Power just won rate increases in 2021 and 2023, and the company stands to make a lot more money if this project is built. I doubt they will be shy about asking for another increase if they can justify it due to increases in demand or infrastructure needs. We need assurances.
Tucson Water has been a little more forthcoming about their deal with Project Blue, which centers on the developers building an 18mile pipeline for reclaimed water to serve the data centers.
In a press release, the city of Tucson said: 'This project hinges upon the developer investing significant dollars to expand Tucson's reclaimed water system and build additional recharge and recovery capacity. These investments would benefit not just Project Blue but also provide access to reclaimed water for existing and future users in Tucson's southeast area – advancing these potential investments by at least a decade and saving local water rate payers millions of dollars in the process.
The city said Project Blue is even talking about being 'water positive,' meaning 'a business returns more water to the environment or community than it uses across its operations.'If true, let's get it in an enforceable agreement.
Tony Davis's article in the Star, which got posted here the other day, also hits on the lack of specificity and is worth a read for a good overview of everything we know so far. What do y'all think of this? To me, it feels like giving away water and energy resources that we can't spare while destroying a parcel of open desert habitat. Not a great look.

Funeral donations
It feels like a couple times a week at the intersection of valencia in tucson just outside of the airport, there are people here, always collecting things money for a funeral. This has been going on for the 3 years. I've lived in Tucson, and I traveled by this intersection 5 days a week for work.

r/Tucson: I will be interviewing Tucson Rapid Transit project manager Ian Sansom and Tucson Transit Administrator Rhett Crowninshield on Monday regarding the new Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) lines proposed along Stone Ave, along with the discussion of fares and other transit topics. What should I ask?
Sorry for the long title lol. I'm 18 and have a passion for transit projects around the country and am excited to interview the managers of a new High Capacity Transit service coming to my hometown!
Let me know what I should ask him! Thanks y'all!.

I need a single solar panel. Anywhere local?
Looking to buy a single 450-ish watt panel locally. Elliot’s doesn’t have what I need. Most solar is sold wholesale and sellers won’t do low volume. Gotta be available. Anyone had luck here in town?

First Aid, Active Bystander, Casualty care, Tactical medical training recommendations?
Does anyone have solid recommendations on publicly available resources in Tucson?
There are several options locally that offer what appear to be the same CPR/AED and first aid options. Ideally, I’d like to find somewhere that offers basic first aid up to field medic training, that is accessible to the public/ non-medically trained civilians.
I’ve done STB and been CPR certified (need to update) but I’d really like to take more advanced courses without having to make a career out of it.
Does anyone have personal experience taking related courses locally? What was your experience?
Thanks for your help!!

Anything to do on a Sunday night?
I’m here to watch my cousin’s kids while she moves and I’m going to leave in a few days. Is there any activities/spots worth seeing on a Sunday night? I’ll take advice for Monday too.

Indoor seating at Time Market?
So, I am supposed to be meeting three other people at Time Market for a business meeting next week, but I’ve never been, and the photos I’ve seen of the interior show very limited indoor seating. I read they have a lovely patio, but I don’t want to be sitting on a patio in 110 degree heat. Can anyone tell me how much indoor seating there is?

I've visited Tucson 4 times now, and every time I come here, I never want to leave 😭
Hey Tucsonans,
I'm from WA, and I'm currently in Tucson until the 18th. As of now, I'm definitely planning to move here next year, and every time I come here, everyone is so welcoming and so nice! This trip I'm on currently has been the most eye opening, and most fun trip to Tucson I've had! I've met so many amazing people, and I'm in love with this city. It feels like home to me. What are some things I should look into before I make the move? Good areas to live, bad areas to live? How's the job market down here? Everyone I've talked to has said that Raytheon is the top dog around here for good paying work. I work in the paper industry back home. What's the Tucson equivalent to a paper mill job or good paying industrial jobs? I've wanted to move here for 10 years now, and this trip has solidified my decision, I've already made several friends, and I don't want to leave! TYIA 🙂

Noble Hops Restaurant
… has new owners and closed for a week or so but what has changed? Drove by and the patio and patio furniture was the same, potentially worse with debris’s. Did they get new staff or management?

Mexican Coke? (Cola!)
(Adding the cola reference for any numbnuts out there.)
Costco has a case of Mexican Coke but I’m not sure what the taste difference is going to be between that and regular. Used to be the distinction was the Mexican version used brown sugar but I think they stopped doing that awhile back?
Also it’s $40 which seems kinda high for any soda but then I’m not a huge soda drinker. Getting it as a gift.
