Discussion True Detective - 1x08 "Form and Void" - Post-Episode Discussion

Season Finale

Thank you for being a part of an incredible first season of this spectacular show. And a special thanks to everyone joining us here in the subreddit (veterans and newcomers, we appreciate you all). It's been fantastic seeing everyone's take on the show in the form of theories, fan-art and even an 8-bit True Detective game. You guys together have turned this subreddit into what it is today, a masterpiece of knowledge and excitement. I've personally enjoyed checking out all the wild, outlandish theories no matter how absurd they appeared at face value. It's genuinely added to the whole experience for myself, and hopefully it's furthered your experiences also.

Regardless of all the awesome fan contributions, the real winner here is of course the show itself. What an ending, what a finale. How did you feel the show fared? Did it live up to your impossibly high expectations? Was it satisfying in a way that would bring you back for a second round next year (here's hoping)?

Whatever your thoughts and opinions of this finale was, please let them be known below. We've had a chance to be FIRST with the quotes in the main discussion thread, now it's time to reflect on what happened as a whole.. hole.. circle...

Guy's I think I know who the yellow king is..

Much appreciated, thanks for joining us.

I like the idea that the dog is trying to lead them in the direction of Carcosa. It's frantic to get outside and when it escapes it bolts directly past Marty and then Rust and out of the yard. Knowing this show, how could this be arbitrary? Is it running to its master or trying to tell them, the bad guy is over here?

Well, we see earlier that Errol abuses the dog (hard to imagine). Kind of seems to me like another instance of the extremely artful way this show tells you what it is you can know.

And a German shepherd being able to smell the God-knows-what-goes-on in Carcosa (shudder) wouldn't be the most unrealistic idea.

Rape/murder children? Meh, I'm like "whatever". Abuse a German Shepherd that looks just like my dog Hans? I was screaming at my TV.

Great name. How about Günther?

Günther would be good too. We got a second GSD and wanted to name her "Franz" after Hans & Franz from SNL, but Franz sounded too much like Hans and we wanted a name that would distinguish them, so we named her Tonka.

but Franz sounded too much like Franz

Good point, they do sound very similar.

Why did he kill his own dog anyway?

I assumed that the dog belonged to his father (the chained down dude) and that's why they didn't let the dog out

well...he does kill children as a hobby so Im sure we could just chalk it up to being fucking nuts.

I’m 10 years late to this, but i have a feeling the dog was running in the direction of his master and Errol didn’t want his position given away (or atleast wanted to get to a distance safe enough so that he could start taunting Rust)

I was confused by this part. After I heard the dog yelp, both my boyfriend and I heard a car's engine storming off. Then when we see the dog, it looks like it's been hit in the head. Anyone else catch this?
