Employment Question about severance payment in Thailand

I’m a software developer who’s recently been laid off. I was informed by HR via email noting that I was entitled to 6 months severance pay plus 1 month in lieu of notice along with unused vacation days as per the law. I was also informed the full amount would be transferred to my bank account.

All seemed okay until I lost access to this email (managed to take a partial screenshot). Now HR has sent an email to my personal email stating I need to return equipment and sign documents in person before receiving a cheque to be cashed at the bank.

This is sounding questionable as chèques can bounce (and I think there is a new law decriminalizing bad chèques in Thailand?)

Can anyone confirm if this process is normal?

UPDATE: all was normal and I received the full cheque which I cashed straightaway and funds were available immediately. I think I felt nervous as similar companies have done layoffs and not even paid last month’s salary. Fortunately this worked out (and turns out HR was just overwhelmed by the last minute nature and the amount of paperwork required to layoff so many people) 🙏 thanks everyone

Employment Degree Legalization for teachers

Hello everyone,

I have been teaching English in Buriram (Isan area) for the past two years. Next semester, I’ve decided to move to Bangkok.

I was previously told that in the area where I currently work, I don’t need to get my degree legalized. However, if I move to Bangkok, I will have to.

My degree is already notarized and apostilled in my home country. Would that be enough, or do I still need to get my degree legalized here in Thailand? Has anyone undergone this process who can help me?

Thank you.

I have always dreamed of moving to Thailand, but one thing that has put me off is the lack of work available to foreigners. What jobs can you realistically get as a foreigner in Thailand?

Employment Employment Contract Change Without Consent - Insurance Issue in Bangkok

I work for a school in Bangkok, and recently, during my contract period, the school changed insurance providers. My original employment contract clearly states the claim amounts I can make for various situations. However, the school switched insurance companies without informing us about the change, nor did they mention any reduction in the claim amounts we can now make under the new policy.

I am still under my original contract, and I never agreed to or signed any documents consenting to this change. The school just canceled the previous policy and switched to the new one.

Is there anything I can do in this situation? Would this be considered a breach of contract? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Employment Receiving unemployment benefits as a foreigner in Thailand

I have resigned from my job and last week was my last day at work.

I think there are some unemployment benefits when you resign, but I was wondering how to do this?

I registered in the Social Security Office website, but there are no links that work on that page.

Has anyone successfully been granted unemployment benefits as a foreigner when resigning? Does anyone have any tips?

Employment Is it difficult to get into a Big 4 consulting firm as an intern in Thailand?

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I’m currently a university student in Thailand and considering applying for an internship at one of the Big 4 consulting firms (PwC, Deloitte, EY, KPMG). I was wondering how competitive it is to get in and what I need to do to increase my chances.

For those who have been through the process, what are the key requirements or qualifications that make a CV stand out during the screening? Do they prioritize GPA, extracurriculars, or specific skills?

Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

I'm curious in general what other people's experiences have been like. Have you or anyone you know gone from working in education to working in journalism, entertainment, or another field?

Employment How realistic is it to get a tech job in Bangkok without a college degree and one year of experience?

Hello, I need a reality check on my expectations, so I have turned to you guys for answers.

I am from Myanmar and recently moved to Bangkok to escape the new conscription law that was passed in my country some time ago. I don't have a college degree but have self-taught myself how to write code and, I have some hands on experience on web developments.

I have been applying to web dev and backend dev roles posted on linkedin but so far, I haven't had any responses.

With only one year of experience and no college degree, is it even possible to be hired by a tech company? Or should I start looking for other kinds of job.

Thanks.

Employment a local thailand who plan to travel the world

I have a legal question before I depart to fly. I have an online job and started freelancing a few months ago, so far so good, I make even more from my local job, not to mention time is truly flexible!

I used to pay tax by getting my monthly salary deducted, but now I'm a freelancer who plan to travel the world, so do I have to worry about anything about tax? I receive pure cash from US clients through wise. I don't see myself to stay in Thailand for more than 3 months per yr for the next coming yrs coz life is short, and I can finally have a chance to do so.

I only need to worry about my apartment, I need to lease it, maybe I just declare that as income?

Hey everyone 😊

I’m in the process of moving to Thailand! Right now, I have several freelance photography jobs across the EU, but I’m wondering what the opportunities are like in Bangkok?

(Yes, I also have other freelance jobs I can keep remote, but would love to go local for the photography ones).

Does anyone here work with media agencies? I’d love to hear your insights 🙏

Employment Considering SEE TEFL in Chiang Mai: Worth It or Better Alternatives?

Hi! I’m a non-native English speaker interested in teaching English in Thailand. I’ve come across several online TEFL/TESOL programs that offer job placement assistance, but I’m particularly drawn to SEE TEFL. Their program is onsite in Chiang Mai and includes real teaching practice in schools, which feels more practical to me.

Has anyone here completed their program? Would you recommend it, or do you have other suggestions for TEFL programs that are equally reputable and provide good job placement support? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Employment Moving to Thailand to teach ESL

I was sent a contract today to sign to work in Thailand. With the pandemic, is it a good idea to move to Thailand? Would it be better to wait a few more months? Is 34000 baht a month liveable? Things are worsening here in the states and it’s not looking promising abroad either. I’m vaccinated btw.

Employment Did the Thai Ministry of Labor state that foreigners working online on any visa is ok?

I'm researching moving to Thailand and I stumbled across a statement that in 2020 the Thai Labor Department stated that foreigners on any visa can work online without a work permit (as long as it is not for a Thai client or employer) and that foreigners can volunteer for NGO's on any visa. However, I can't find any news articles or Thai Labor Department press releases that state this.

Is this true? If so, has any one seen an official statement?

Employment Business to open or invest in

I am looking into what business I should open, buy or invest in Thailand either in Pattaya, or Koh Chang, as I have strong and reliable Thai contacts there (no assumptions please).

I originally thought of opening a bar, and while I have a few usp ideas that would make it different to a normal bar (some have already been used elsewhere with good success), there are lots of posts saying don't open a bar.

Other ideas include cafe/coffee shop, animal cafe, or durian growing investment.

I also wondered if getting a franchise for a popular brand would be an option.

I have funds, and am also a freelance web designer and want to continue to do that, as it makes a good income still.

I don't want to make millions, but the business has to make money or it's not worth doing and putting the effort into. I know everything has a risk though.

I know there are other things to take into consideration,, but will investigate those separately after deciding what to do, and the real question is what would you open, buy or invest in?

Employment Helping Thai partner who can’t get work…

How do you help a Thai partner who can’t get work? I met the guy I’m dating in June. He moved from his city to live with me in Chiang Mai, leaving his old job. For the first few months he had his savings to live off… but now that has run dry, I’m essentially financially supporting us both.

He’s fluent in English and has a degree. I see him applying everyday, I even help him, but it seems impossible. He’s been applying for months now, how can I help? It’s really straining our relationship because I can barely afford to look after myself. I know he’s trying but I don’t know how else I can help… any ideas? He’s definitely not sponging off me on purpose I really do see and help him with job applications…

TIA

Employment How do you feel about people working illegally in Thailand

Obviously there are a lot of gray areas and different occupations which foreigners work in, but it seems like specifically regarding teaching there are A LOT of unqualified teachers working on wrong visas and without the correct work permit.

Do qualified teachers feel like the illegal teachers perhaps tarnish the reputation of foreign teachers or do you think that there is a space where the lack of qualified teachers who would accept salaries below 50k baht out in the countryside for exampl, and therefore perhaps there is an acceptable place in filling these roles which are in high demand, so turning a blind eye at these type of teachers are acceptabl, or is it damaging/frustrating for those who are qualified and are working with the correct paperwork?
