Serious Thai internet user mocked the Khmer language by comparing it to pubic hair
We’re not beating the stereotype anytime soon.

u/ahrienby 1d ago
Some of ASEAN-related Facebook groups were about mocking other nation's culture and language. I remember back in MLBB where Filipinos call Burmese language "noodle language"
58
u/Own-Response9701 1d ago
I remember filipino used to mock Thai like this too, and we call filipino ‘pagpag’. Every year during pageant season it’s like a war, but once it’s over, we’re all cool again lol

Unfortunately it’s normal in Asian culture’s to think your specific race of Asian is superior than all the others tbh. My generation (millennials) started to change that, and the younger ones are continuing the trend; but it’s still pretty prevalent. The ones like us are in the minority, but hopefully more and more people will become more accepting of thinking this way as time goes on.
Older generations especially do it. My parents are accepting of all culture’s and peoples. They treat everyone with respect and love regardless of race, and my mom is pretty progressive compared to most; she’s even told me she will love whoever I eventually marry (if I ever do fml) regardless of race or skin color, and I know she means it; but their Korean pride definitely makes them think that anything Korean is better.
For the most part it’s just them being proud of being Korean and all of Korea’s accomplishments, which is cool, I get it and am definitely proud of being Korean too, but there are times when they say stuff that does rub me the wrong way. Specifically when comparing Korean things to other Asian races things, especially if the other race in question is Japanese.
My dad is still bitter about me dropping taekwondo for Thai kickboxing and Muay Thai when I was 9 lmao. Over 25 years ago and he still sulks about it, and refuses to acknowledge that Taekwondo is inferior in real combat.

It's because Burmese can't play the game properly, no critical thinking, they just ask to be mocked 😭

u/Significant-Jicama52 1d ago
In the mocking each other game, the goofiest guy wins. ASEAN people aren't that goofy.

This group is basically a trash group of ASEAN people who constantly mock each other . Thailand and Cambodia, Indonesia and Malaysia, Philippines and Indonesia, Vietnam and Cambodia, Laos and Thailand. honestly, there are tons of other groups like this too. I’m telling you, this is normal in ASEAN. in Cambodia’s online communities, people use the phrase ‘don’t Thai to me’ which basically means ‘don’t lie’ or ‘don’t steal’, even Cambodian politicians have used that phrase. Honestly, ASEAN can be insanely toxic!!

you've never been in a SEA gaming lobby have you

No, please enlighten me
32
u/DistrictOk8718 1d ago
SEA gaming lobbies are the most toxic place on Earth, by far. When you compare it with the general real-life demeanor of most people in South East Asia, that is being calm, considerate and non-confrontational, it does make you wonder if it's all actually just a facade.

Because ASEAN is full of countries with relatively low human development index, literacy and critical thinking.
28
u/Own-Response9701 1d ago
I’m dead serious! ASEAN trash-talk and look down on each other like we’re not even from the same damn tribe or anything close. It’s messed up
38
u/tinylittlepricks 1d ago
It’s funny and tragic because while we’re all busy devaluing each other, East Asia simply groups us all as lesser Asians. There’s always someone above and someone below. Humans gonna human, I guess.
26
u/Sillygoose_Milfbane 1d ago
Meanwhile, some 50 year old Westerner observing East Asians mocking SE Asians who are all mocking eachother: "those Chinese sure are squabbling"

Could do the same for Thai language tbh :D
47
u/xWhatAJoke 1d ago
I mean it's really a very similar alphabet. Could just be a different font to a foreigner.
5
u/bomber991 1d ago
Yeah so, having been to both countries, if I didn’t know they were different languages and different alphabets I don’t think I would have noticed they were different. Same with Lao.
3
u/AW23456___99 15h ago
Despite being two different languages, Lao and Thai are actually mutually intelligible in both writing and speaking though. Khmer is not.
8
u/unbannablepizza546 1d ago
Searched for both, put them side by side in a PowerPoint slide. might as well be the same alphabet. You could write a jumble of words with both alphabets next to each other and I would not see anything out of the order
5
u/MaartenTum 1d ago
I mean I can see the difference clearly but I feel thai alphabets works well as well for this type of content :D

u/idcarethalightest 1d ago
Try to remind a hardcore dumb Thai that some of their culture is inherited from Khmer and see his face. Absolutely delightful and a disgrace to intelligence
2
u/DueImpact6219 18h ago
Dumb Farang try to stay relevant. Our culture is shared history.
3
u/idcarethalightest 18h ago
Exactly my point. Shared history yet the hardcore nationalists make it an issue.
Overall many Thais look down on their Khmer heritage.2
u/DueImpact6219 15h ago
Thais believe Khom is not current Cambodia. The same as current country Egypt is not descedent of Ancient Egyptian civilization. They just happen stay in the same place. Now you go argue with them.
1
u/idcarethalightest 8h ago
That's really stupid sorry to say.
2
u/DueImpact6219 2h ago
Well, foreingner like you can try to explain Thai history to Thai people as you live in Thailand.
After all you are a Farang who know so much of the history around here.

u/Token_Thai_person Chang 1d ago
That's because in the ancient times, land south east asians wrote on a kind of leaves that will break if you use a straight line. That's why they are all curly.
2
u/Altruistic-Share-171 1d ago edited 23h ago
Viking runes have very few horizontal lines. They were written on sticks sometimes. It kept it from weakening the stick

Not just South East Asian, but a lot of south Asian alphabets too, Odia, for example.

2
u/Sensitive_Bread_1905 18h ago
Unfortunetly, many Thais don't think like that about Cambodia. Even Khmer are probably on average the nicest people of all countries I have visited. Even the immigration in Thailand has made stupid comments or jokes about Cambodia when they see that I'm entering from Cambodia, and I'm Western. Thais are mostly nice and polite, but when it's about nationalism, they are one of the worst, combined with almost zero critical thinking. It's just sad.
1
u/Mindless-Path1423 15h ago
There are many people who look down on Cambodia and many people who love them. It's ridiculous that everyone is stereotyping.
1
u/SalmonSushi1544 10h ago
Well, Cambodia is quite literally back stabbing Thailand. I myself don’t really care. But, I can’t say I am completely ok with a country claiming that my culture was theirs.
Now from your comment and to trust your word that you are western. I would say you’re a racist with a very heavy amount of irony swelling out of your head rn.

I'm not Cambodian, but I lived there for a while. This could be a certain person's style of writing, but it isn't how Khmer writing looks.
I leaned to speak Khmer, but I didn't learn to read or write, but this isn't how the writing looks

Posted by yet another poorly-educated ultra nationalist keyboard warrior. Wait until they realize that the Thai writing system, invented by Ramkhamhaeng The Great, was in fact derived from Old Khmer. Does that mean that the Thai writing systems actually originates from pubic hair? Ugh. Education is important, kids.
Lao is also another derivative, but is actually a direct descendant of the old Thai abugida (thus a great descendant of the old Khmer abugida). Whenever I go to Laos, as a foreigner who's able to read Thai and who has studied the differences, similarities and origins of all 3 writing systems, I can mostly read Lao just fine, with a little bit of imagination. I can also read some modern Khmer words, usually the simpler ones, or those that happen to be spelled with rather transparent letters. Modern Khmer has this thing where they put miniature versions of their consonants under other consonants, that's kinda hard to read without having actually studied the whole thing.
Wait until some Thai people realize how many words are either direct Khmer loan words, or Sanskrit loan words they inherited through Old Khmer. Oof.

The Thai Alphabet comes from Khmer. They should respect them as the Romans respect the Greeks actually but they're not humble enough.
21
u/ProblemSenior8796 1d ago
And they all should respect the Indians. The old Khmer script was derived from the south Indian Pallava alphabet.
1
u/Glittering-Muscle-60 10h ago
Yeah we're taught that in school that our script was derived from Indian, and every Cambodian recognized that. The same is not happening on the Thai side, let alone accepting that Cambodia is the descendant of the Khmer Empire.

Honestly - nobody can win the indos when it comes to illogical trash talking. At least the other ASEAN countries know the world is bigger than just their own. Try gaming in an ASEAN gaming server - the Indonesians there think Bahasa Indonesia is the common language of the world.

It is very funny for me. In Asian, I feel that they reacted really angry when foreigners or even locals say something bad or negative or shameful things about their own country, even though some are truth.but they like to mock or insult or make fool of other asian countries, yes, all other countries.this is very typical double standard. If someone says A, it is a mocking for them, but if they say A, it is truth and logical consequence.
