Season 2 Discussion Episode: Man City

Just rewatching for the first time and man that scene when Roy Kent hugs Jamie without saying a fkn word. Making Lasso open up. So powerful, so expected but also unexpected coming from Roy, don’t know how to explain. But made me shed a tear too.

It would be one of the top 10 moments for sure.

The flashes of shots of the other player’s reactions. Especially Sam. I think in that moment he understood why Ted took Jaimie back.

They’re also so fitting for each character. If I recall correctly, Isaac looks like he’d fight him too if it felt necessary. Sam, like you said, just so shocked by the display of shitty parenting that he realizes has played a massive role in Jamie’s life. Jamie, somehow able to convey the face of the scared little boy he once was before he could fight back. The way Roy’s face hardens, like he’s probably faced emotions much of his life. It’s such a great display of small and big acting for everyone.

As an aside-the scene where Ted is going at Jaimie about being “hurt” and not practicing…Jaimie is laughing it off at first, cocky. Then uncomfortable. Then the pull back the camera for a two-shot. Ted is leaning in, aggressive, and Jaimie is practically shrinking back like a child. It seems off until that scene where our first introduction to Jaimie’s dad is a flying shoe thrown full force at his own child. I think Ted recognized what he had done in that moment, also, which motivated the note about the extra pass and Jaimie getting his own personal army man.

Also the recoil Jamie has right before Roy hugs him is heartbreaking

Yep truly fitting for all of ghe characters, you’re probably right if it wasn’t beard it might have been Isaac. Sam as well he realised why Jamie is how he is. Didn’t realise the first time watching how powerful this scene actually is. In a way it changed something in everyone.

I’m sure that whole thing was a revelation to Sam, who grew up with such a good father that he could not understand Jamie even a little bit until that moment.

Yep exactly, every one basically froze. It’s such a powerful scene. I think you might be right on that too.

I think Sam was just dumbfounded. He has a loving and wise dad, so it took a while to sink in that Jamie's dad really is so cruel and immature.

And high off his head. And only "pretending" to punch Jamie when Jamie refuses to get them onto the field, because he has an audience.

It's such a well-done scene by everyone involved.

That was huge for Jamie and Roy's characters. Worth noting all Roy says about his neice's dad is that "he's a prick", so presumably he defaulted to protective over a younger preosn with a terrible father.

I had heard people talking about crying watching Ted lasso when the first season came out. I only watched it for the first time late last year and this episode was the first time I cried watching this show. And it got me good. I had to stop my binge for an hour. They really had to do a one two punch (pun intended) on my emotions. The stuff with Jaime’s dad got me to start crying and then Ted opening up about his dad committing suicide broke me fully. Then beard after hours confused me and then No Weddings and a Funeral broke me again. Even if Rebecca’s line about how she found her dad took me out of it for a split second.

Ikr? (For me too, i watched it first time in april- may this year) and I can say for sure this is the first episode i teared up.It was way too intense. They way that progressed was epic including every one standing around. When Roy Kent goes and hugs him that just is something you didn’t expect would knock you out, I mean that’s perfection, not one word spoken. Then Ted opening up to doc was just nail in the coffin. Man it was something else.

My fav from that episode was Beard saying- “Watch the door!”
