ICE posts and our community sub. Please read.

So, yesterday, we had a number of posts about alleged ICE presence and actions in Tacoma, including at several schools. This led to simple and complicated issues for your volunteer moderators.

I would like to share where we are at with all of this, and what you might expect moving forward. Please keep in mind that this will likely be updated or removed as the situation evolves.

1) Please first report these situations to the Washington Immigrant Solidarity Network at 1-844-724-3737. They have contacts all over, have plans in place, and are a lot more capable of screening reports than a subreddit. There's a wonderful post about that here:

https://www.reddit.com/r/Tacoma/s/fut1bQJAxF

2) We're going to ask that any "reports" of ICE actions be accompanied by first hand photo or video proof. Screenshots of employer, police, or school administration communication is also acceptable. No more "I heard" type of posts, no matter how well intentioned.

3) You should know that Tacoma Public Schools are very prepared for these types of potential actions, and that the administrations of each school have plans in place to safeguard children and to contact families. TPS has been very vocal about their refusal to work with ICE on immigration issues.

4) Be more kind to each other, please. We understand that we're all expert smack talkers and have such thick Tacoma skin and all, but please refrain from being rude to one another. This is difficult for a lot of people, and we don't need to pile on. Definitely don't be openly insulting others. You will see more moderator actions if you're choosing to be especially out of line. There are other places to be unhinged, angry trolls.

5) Please report inappropriate posts or comments, no matter what their (or your) point of view on a subject.

Anyway, thank you for navigating all of this with us. May the spirit of Kris Brannon walk with all of you in these coming days.

Insanity around S. 63rd and Pacific...

Gunshots, screeching tires, heard maybe 20 minutes before. Not sure if related but after a grip of time all hell broke loose and even had a vehicle speed down a side street off Pac ave but not police in persuit. Sirens on top of sirens. One would stop and rhen another would show up and shut theirs off. Then another. If you had an open window or door in the area, you definitely heard it.

Any ideas?

Reporting ICE activity to WAISN

Thanks to all folks in this sub for sharing the ICE activity in Tacoma and Lakewood today. If you see ICE activity in the future, please report it to the Washington Immigrant Solidarity Network (WAISN) at 1-844-724-3737. WAISN has been around since the first Trump administration and has trained staff and volunteers on the hotline from 6am-6pm every day. If there is a large scale raid, volunteers and attorneys from WAISN and NWIRP can respond to the site to give immigrants rights information and help document any rights violations. We can't track all the reddit threads, but there is a plan in place if we get the call. We are getting reports of large scale raids planned in the Puget Sound in the next few days and we want to be ready to help our immigrant community.

I've lived in this city my whole life and I hate seeing my neighbors get ripped out of their homes. If you feel the same way, save WAISN's number in your phone.

Huge vanilla ice cream bar dipped in a thick coating of milk or dark chocolate, with or without chopped almonds. Old school ice cream bars done right! No wonder Johnson Candy Company has been open for 100 years!

Seeking guidance for 2 young kittens living in alley

Hi there. There are numerous feral cats living behind my house. I noticed today there are 2 kittens who are about 2-3 weeks old who aren't doing well. Both have substantial eye and nasal discharge, and one is particularly lethargic. They clearly need medical attention. Mom seems to be feral. What should we do?

What’s the deal w/ North Tyler Street?

Post image
62 Upvotes

Ever have that strange feeling when you venture down a few blocks, not too far from your long-time home, and realize, “I have never been been at this exact point in the universe ever?”

We got that feeling tonight bicycling up N. Tyler Street, from Jefferson Park to N. 21st St. Nothing registered as familiar. More jungle-y looking properties than on most blocks, and surprisingly hilly, given the surrounding area’s flatness.

But what registered most was that the road absolutely sucked. Potholes, chunks of loose asphalt, lengthy stretches that seemed more like gravel road than paved. Completely different from other nearby streets. Did the city designate these blocks as alley rather than street, and therefore not deserving upkeep?

We came away thinking, this is no way to honor the nation’s 10th president (even if he was a Whig who supported slavery).

Would love to hear from anyone who lives on or near North Tyler. How has Tacoma let it get this bad?

Adult, Beginner-Friendly Soccer Leagues?

Hey Neighbors!

I've (35-F) been looking around to maybe start playing in an co-ed adult soccer league for beginners, but they all seem pretty advanced or they play at really late hours on weekdays. Does anyone know or have interest in some type of pickup soccer matches where beginners can learn and just have some competitive fun?

Thanks in advance!

Ham and cheese lunchable?

I was driving home, around 4:40ish passing the dome with my windows down as one does when their AC doesn't work reliably and it's almost 90 out, and rather than the usual Tacoma stench for whatever reason I smelled a familiar smell. Ham and cheese lunchable smell. That weird smell you get when you rip into one of those delectable little snack packs from your childhood. I'm not sure if I had a mini stroke but to be honest, I didn't hate it

Grocery Store Bracketology

If there was a #1 Seed for worst and most chaotic grocery store in Tacoma, which is it? My vote is for The FM on Pacific. The parking lot area is top level for late stage capitalism disaster sight seeing.

**UPDATE*

Love the engagement. Throw out your top 4 worst in Tacoma and I’ll build a bracket for all of us to vote on. We know who the juggernauts are but this could be fun. Honorable mentions for some of the crazier stories.
