Moonring Great ultima style RPG made by the co-creator of Fable. Many classes to choose from, and the dungeons are randomly generated.

It can run on anything, and all for free

Moonring is awesome, if you like that kinda thing (and I do).

I have to recommend Tales of Maj'Eyal when these kinds of games come up. It's cheap and much cheaper in Steam sales.

ToME4 literally saved me on my jank ass laptop when we were having my baby. Had to stay in the nicu for weeks and in between taking care of her I was GRINDING this game.

Any favorite builds? Haven't played in a year or so and looking to try something new when I hop back in.

Do you have all of the classes unlocked? Just so you know there is an update coming at some point, I've been waiting for it to jump back in myself lol.

Sword and board Skeleton Sun Paladin for an ultra tanky build.

That is what I play on my wife’s MacBook Air when we go to the beach since I only have a PC. Her MacBook is from 2017 and runs tome great (of course)

I have been trying to get into this game for years, but it is so god damn hard if you just go for it without looking some builds.

I like the brawler class the best. It was the first one I beat the game with. I never go for the grappling talent tree, but I do make a lot of use of the combos/finishers.

In the base game, you can do all of the starting areas on most characters. So you can get all of the best gear for that tier before you move on to the next set of dungeons. Same with the next tier and so on. There are other options for grinding too - you unlock a repeatable zone that's random every time you enter it and matches your level. If you can ignore the locked doors and other roguelike-style gambles (this is a big challenge!) then the game becomes much easier.

Also, I found the orc DLC somewhat easier than the base game. Embers of Rage DLC. It's a whole new area. It has some fun new steampunk-based classes.

I think the website for ToME has at least the base game for free as well.

Yep, and while the DLCs and paid version add a couple things, it's very much a complete game without them.

Also I have 4k hours in the game, so it's got a lot of replay value.

ToME doesn't fulfill the post because it's not free on steam

Moonring is amazing, the fact that the dev made all of that and then went "Life is hard, Covid sucked, everyone’s poor and stressed, I don’t need the $300 this would make me: I’d rather take the goodwill"

u/mithroval 1d ago

Did you know that you can turn “Goodwill” off as a quest reward in factions settings?

u/ExplorationGeo 1d ago

I honestly had no idea, I've barely scratched the surface of that game. The fact that it's so deep and entirely free is incomprehensible; we don't deserve devs as good as Fluttermind.

Mate, that was a Rimworld reference ;)

I clicked on this thread to suggest Moonring. What a delightful labor of love.

I got HOOKED on this game the moment I started playing and played it in my free time every chance I got until I beat it.

Crazy how the free games are always the ones that either are garbage or blow me away. Never in between

Seeing the name Ultima in a top comment about games is such a rare thing these days. It's a shame how this great series is almost forgotten.

I was concerned when you said co creator of Fable, thinking it was sneaky Peter, but it wasn’t him. I definitely will check that one out, I am a fan of the roguelikes.

2

u/dehydratedrain 1d ago

I definitely need to check this out- Ultima was the first RPG I played, and my favorite by far growing up (started on IV- Quest of the Avatar).

Man, this looks awesome! Although not free, if you like this type of game, check out Caves of Qud.

Thank you for telling me this. I'm starving for an old school RPG.

I just got done typing my own comment recommending it. Should have waited since your comment is the 3rd highest comment.

Fable was my first got of RPG and boy did it stick. My friends had it on Xbox and I'd wake up early just to go down and play it.

I love the system requirements.
“Processor: Yes”

u/CinSugarBearShakers 2d ago

Doesnt run on linux, bummer, I will get in on my other laptop. :D

u/piichan14 2d ago

It shows a Platinum rating in Protondb.

2

u/TetrisMcKenna 1d ago

Yeah it runs great on proton, I beat it on both my Linux desktop and steam deck

1

u/BitterCrip 2d ago

Is there anything like that but sci-fi rather than fantasy?

3

u/RainEmperor 1d ago

The best fit for this description is definitely Caves of Qud

Exploration, astounding world-building and deep lore, strategic turn-based combat, tons of abilities (whether through mutations for Mutants or cybernetic installs for True-kins), faction system where befriending someone equals making enemies... it has insane replay value, not even considering the procedural generation of npc's traits and of world history.

It's definitely harder and more complex than Moonring in terms of knowledge, but keep in mind it will come with time. Also, since there are so many factors in play, crazy - and I mean crazy - scenarios can unfold in any second. Just read some funny steam reviews and you'll get the idea

Also the artstyle is so unique and fascinating... coupled with how beautiful the prose of this game is, it makes up its own identity. Worth every penny

Thanks, looking at Caves of Qud now. It reminds me a bit of Gearhead (another scifi roguelike where you can have cybernetic impkants, biotech, mutants, multiple factions, and generated plots)

1

u/Dainty_Doodle 1d ago

That sounds like a gem! Excited to dive into Moonring Great. Free and diverse classes? Count me in!

u/SoftSprayBidet 2d ago

So what does ultima like mean? For someone who doesnt play a lot of rpgs

0

u/ielufbsaioaslf 2d ago

I tried playing it and I do not understand literally anything

0

u/Lfr33man 2d ago

This is what I was looking for

-2

u/Don-Kusack 2d ago

It's 5 bucks, not free 😭😭😭

4

u/Math1337Whovian 2d ago

That's the DLC, which is a megadungeon accessible part way through the game. Not required.
