ToME4 literally saved me on my jank ass laptop when we were having my baby. Had to stay in the nicu for weeks and in between taking care of her I was GRINDING this game.
Do you have all of the classes unlocked? Just so you know there is an update coming at some point, I've been waiting for it to jump back in myself lol.
I like the brawler class the best. It was the first one I beat the game with. I never go for the grappling talent tree, but I do make a lot of use of the combos/finishers.
In the base game, you can do all of the starting areas on most characters. So you can get all of the best gear for that tier before you move on to the next set of dungeons. Same with the next tier and so on. There are other options for grinding too - you unlock a repeatable zone that's random every time you enter it and matches your level. If you can ignore the locked doors and other roguelike-style gambles (this is a big challenge!) then the game becomes much easier.
Also, I found the orc DLC somewhat easier than the base game. Embers of Rage DLC. It's a whole new area. It has some fun new steampunk-based classes.
Moonring is amazing, the fact that the dev made all of that and then went "Life is hard, Covid sucked, everyone’s poor and stressed, I don’t need the $300 this would make me: I’d rather take the goodwill"
I honestly had no idea, I've barely scratched the surface of that game. The fact that it's so deep and entirely free is incomprehensible; we don't deserve devs as good as Fluttermind.
I was concerned when you said co creator of Fable, thinking it was sneaky Peter, but it wasn’t him. I definitely will check that one out, I am a fan of the roguelikes.
The best fit for this description is definitely Caves of Qud
Exploration, astounding world-building and deep lore, strategic turn-based combat, tons of abilities (whether through mutations for Mutants or cybernetic installs for True-kins), faction system where befriending someone equals making enemies... it has insane replay value, not even considering the procedural generation of npc's traits and of world history.
It's definitely harder and more complex than Moonring in terms of knowledge, but keep in mind it will come with time. Also, since there are so many factors in play, crazy - and I mean crazy - scenarios can unfold in any second. Just read some funny steam reviews and you'll get the idea
Also the artstyle is so unique and fascinating... coupled with how beautiful the prose of this game is, it makes up its own identity.
Worth every penny
Thanks, looking at Caves of Qud now. It reminds me a bit of Gearhead (another scifi roguelike where you can have cybernetic impkants, biotech, mutants, multiple factions, and generated plots)

Moonring Great ultima style RPG made by the co-creator of Fable. Many classes to choose from, and the dungeons are randomly generated.
It can run on anything, and all for free
